Mike McDaniel uses innovative play design and equally creative concepts to lead one of the best offenses in the NFL. But his use of certain personnel packages especially during critical times of the game can stand to improve in 2024.

Thanks for watching. Do you guys think Mike McDaniel can use his personnel more effectively? Let me know in the comment section below.

That play was 1000% on Claypool, who ran a 20 yard banana route instead of a 15 yard out. Tyreek took himself out after the play before. Waddle, Achane, and others weren’t available to play. It was shitty… but it is also why they attacked upgrades at the TE and WR3-5 positions.

Thanks for the comment. Terrible luck. Injuries surely took its toll especially late in the season. But there were times when McDaniel used sub-optimal packages when his roster was relatively healthy. I'll explore that in an upcoming episode.

Thanks again for the comment, I uploaded a part 3 video with video clips of the personnel groupings when the team was relatively healthy from weeks 1-5. Check it out! Hopefully, it won't be a problem in 2024.

2:07 Tyreek had to pull himself from the game, Waddle and Mostert didn’t dress because of injuries. Context matters. It’s not McDaniel’s fault the guys weren’t available to play. I get criticizing some things, but to criticize him for guys being unavailable when they didn’t dress is a little much.

Thanks for the comment. And of course, context matters. I am not blaming him for not playing players that are unavailable to play. I am only blaming him for when players are available and left on the sideline. I think Devon Achane should have been on the field when Hill left the game. He was available to play. Robbie Chosen could have used his speed to stretch the defense but instead he went with Chase Claypool? McDaniel's offense is built on speed and he left two of the faster players on offense on the sideline during the most critical drive at that point of the season.

@@MattNewton In that area of the field, Achane would’ve been more of a speed threat than Chosen, who has more long speed than quickness. IMO, and I love Tua, but Tua, McDaniel, and especially Claypool are most at fault, since you kinda have to throw past the sticks there.

Agreed about Chosen and the long speed. But Chosen running a route up the left seam might have cleared out the left safety (who intercepted the pass) and given Claypool a chance at a one-on-one on the sideline. His use of personnel and play design on that particular play didn't do the players on the field any favors. But Tua and Claypool also executed poorly so I agree, they also share some of the blame. The fact that both Achane and Chosen were on the sideline was a headscratcher to me.

@@MattNewton chosen wouldn’t have been able to run that clear out. Be honest with yourself.

I'm being totally honest. In week 3 vs the Broncos, Chosen did just that. He ran up the numbers, put a move on Pat Surtain II and scored a long touchdown up the seam. It's on film. The Bills have undoubtedly seen it. At the very least it puts the safety in conflict. Double the seam or break on the out. If it makes him think for a second it could have made all the difference in how it turned out for the Dolphins.
