Really solid points. I think I’ve been focusing too much on trying to sight read and need to spend more time going back to learning by ear. I used to learn a lot of blues songs that way back in the day. Thanks for the tip!

..The Real Book will give you some loose outlines of standards but the next step is listening to the legends and checking out other sources online....when we were in Boston back in the day, the edition I copped on Mass Ave. didn’t have the errata section either which had three or pages of corrections..Mike Moreno kicking it nice, respect bro!

right! I use the real book as a good sight reading exercise, but to really learn the song i need to go transcribe somebody playing the melody carefully

For once somebody that sets this clear.: "got to try, because there's no other way you're going to get it. There's no other way you're going to learn to hear harmony, without doing that. If you can't hear harmony, you can't play. That's just as simple as it gets. If you can't pick a tune up by ear, there's no way that you're going to play music on any kind of advanced level."

Basically put your Realbook in the trash first, then you go buy some music paper a pen an eraser and a cd, and finally open your hears and your heart. And that's it! (go check the lyrics too when possible)

Poses quite a challenge: You can't begin to learn standards until you have mastered Jazz harmony and have a great ear? Ugh.

There are different ways of approaching it. Yes for one who can here all the changes great, but others may not. Doesn’t mean u won’t here them in the future. If diligent one will play thru changes. Sher Music books are more authenticated than others. Listening is highly important but if leading busy life not so easy.peace
