Mike Oldfield's entire Amarok album performed live for the first time in history. Gus Fogle (piano) and Jason Miller (bass guitar) arranged the full band score of Amarok (transcribed by Ryan Yard) for their respective instruments.

This is as good a place and time as any to announce that I am FINALLY making a full studio recording of Amarok. It is being recorded and mixed in my own studio using a wide variety of classic keyboard instruments and synthesizers. I've currently got about the first 15 minutes completely recorded and mixed. I'm projecting a late summer/early fall release this year. I am making maximum effort to do justice to the original version's wide dynamic range and variety of instrumentation. At the same time, I am making the piece my own. I am 100 percent confident in improving upon the live version Jason and I did back in 2012. This is a brand new arrangement, and I am recording the piece just as Mike did back in 1989/1990- multiple layers of tracks played one by one by hand. Stay tuned.

10 years ago today, Jason and I performed Amarok live for the first time. Reflecting back on this performance after a decade, it's hard not to get slightly emotional thinking about how much has changed in my life since then. Through that decade, I experienced several personal losses, graduated music school, changed careers, then came full circle again playing music with Jason after several years of us not working together on anything musical. We've recorded our first original music together in 8 years, a full instrumental album that we are both quite proud of and worked hard to complete for most of the past year. For anyone interested, you can listen to our most recent work here: soundcloud.com/gus-fogle/two-is-two-one-is-one-full-album

This is a thing of utter beauty and I'm so glad to have stumbled across it just now. Oh to have been in that room that night. You and Jason not only captured the sound of Amarok, you absolutely found and expressed the powerful emotions of Mike's music. Thank you so much. I'm looking forward to hearing your own stuff because you are clearly extraordinarily talented!

Amazing to still see the positive and supportive comments still rolling in all these years later. I'm a different man than I was when this performance took place. Looking back, we played a lot of wrong notes! Maybe we'll do a "corrected" version someday with an expanded ensemble...

You could add up all of the wrong notes (surprisingly not many) and I wouldn't have gotten even that many right. I agree with what chelfyn said. This was a truly stunning performance. In a proper venue with decent sound it would have been even better. I wish you could have toured it. I didn't think this album would ever see a live performance - just one small section of it would be a monumental task. I'm in awe. Easily the most impressive thing ever to show up on KZbin.

Thank you everyone for the kind words! I never expected the reactions I have read about our performance. I'm absolutely floored that this video is still receiving comments after all this time! Thank you again everyone! I also want to thank Ryan Yard. He worked the hardest of us three and I couldn't imagine the amount of hours of strenuous work it took to notate, by ear, every little thing in the most complex and extreme of compositions that consisted of so many simultaneous tracks of a very long list of instruments from all over the world as well as the vocals, even down to the tiniest noises as amazingly accurate as he did. This couldn't be possible at all without him and his seemingly unending dedication to making this happen. There were only two of us on camera, but this truly was a 3 piece ensemble, Ryan you were in it with us from the beginning and were with us when we performed. Also thanks to Gus Fogle for having the passion he had for this piece to set fourth this tremendous project of seemingly epic proportions (at least to us anyway, lol) that took us on an incredible journey and left us with some of the best memories. Not to mention how ridiculously hard he worked to arrange this enormous score for us to perform as true and respectful as possible to Mike's original composition/recording. It's amazing to look back over four years ago at the musicians we were back then and how far we have come since. You're still pushing all kinds of musical boundaries and I am along for the ride, learning all the theory I can and trying to keep up, lol. Onward we go! For anyone who hasn't heard the original album of Mike Oldfield's Amarok, I sincerely ask that you please check it out. Take an hour or so to sit down and listen to this piece in its entirety. Let it take you on the incredible musical journey that i'm sure it has taken a lot of us as it may have been intended by Mike himself. Everyone check out Ryan Yard's works. He has released albums lately of fantastic compositions. Also check out Gus Fogle on SoundCloud if you want to hear some recordings since this performance (warning - some humor involved, lol). www.ryanyardmusic.com/ soundcloud.com/gus-fogle - Jason Miller

I was in tears after this video! When "Amarok" first came out, I listened to it three times a day! It was a GLORIOUS return to Oldfield's long-since abandoned music from "Tubular Bells" to "Incantations" (personnel included), sandwhiched in between two albums that were...well, suffice it to say I'd hardly categorize them as being in the same league. Being a musician myself (synthesizers, piano, trumpet player in high school, and guitar for a BRIEF time), I was amazed that you guys captured so much of what is truly "Amarok" as you did, on just TWO instruments! Truly an AWESOME (a word I RARELY use) feat!

@morf9898 8 жыл бұрын
Wow! Thank you so much! I admit, there are two parts in particular that brought on the tears for me at times. But to be told that our performance impacted you in that way is more than I could have hoped for. The lack of emotional conveyance was my biggest worry with only Gus and I by ourselves attempting to cover this piece that has such an incredibly vast amount of tracks and instruments. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
@JesseClark83
@JesseClark83 7 жыл бұрын
WOW...such a treat to get a reply from the incredible musician himself--something I most certainly did not expect! I can certainly understand your apprehension over the whole "emotional conveyance" issue, as the combined tone colors of the different instruments used in Oldfield's music are always a key element in that. I hope you will do more of his music, though I seem to remember something about you saying you wouldn't after this in the interview...perhaps I'm wrong. Either way, I hope to hear more from you!

@@72marshflower15 Who in the world is this guy Gus Foyle? Sounds shady. Almost as shady as someone who would suggest wrangling dozens of musicians in dozens of locations across the world at one time to perform one of the most complex pieces of music ever written- live on the internet. It's astonishing still that you think I have the resources to pull something like that off. The only reason we ever played Amarok as a 2 man team back 10 years ago is that was all we could accomplish on a shoestring budget. How about YOU put up the money for us to play it on the internet live with a big band. That would take the pressure off me, and I could cease to be such a pretentious horrible asshole since I can't afford to fund the project that you've been demanding we do for years on end.

@@GusFogle “Who in the world is this Gus Foyle?”. Response) a pretty egoistic opening, lol.. you’re probably a nice guy and all for the sake of appearances. How is it shady to inquire about the potential live performance of a piece of music? I had the insight to point out the future of music performance and you guys mocked me for it. That’s what’s shady.. and surprising even. I never claimed you had the resources to pull it off, lol. That wouldn’t be terribly rational to presume, would it? I just assumed you carried the enthusiasm was all.. The notion of a polymorphic piece being performed y a polymorphic internet ensemble only struck me as an original an idea as Opus 1 itself. If we couldn’t get 200 people together to perform with the assistance of 2,000 people in ONE PLACE, then perhaps the easier option would be to tap people where they are, wherever they are in the world. It seemed outrageous at the time, surely, but with the advent of the Rona virus, it’s not so implausible anymore is it? 🤣🤣🤣 If it really takes that much money, the I’ll call you when I win the lottery or some shit. Course I don’t really ever play the lottery, so I guess I better get started. You guys did a magnificent job for a shoe string budget and I’m willing to bet it can be done again.. just bigger this next go around.. If I ever possess the kind of money you’re suggesting, then my lawyer will call you accordingly to set you up with the funds you.. “need”.. Until then, grow some skin.. You’re gonna need it..

I bought this album a long time ago as it was a fully digital recording using the whole 90dB dynamic range of the Compact Disc and the fact that it was an amazing production performed by Mike Oldfield, but on a multi track over a long period. To write the score and play this live is a monumental feat, Gus is obviously a very talented pianist well supported by Jason on bass, I can understand why Gus was nearly collapsing afterwards. I would be interested to see Mike Oldfield's reaction, I reckon he would be impressed.

Mike's never acknowledged this peformance, though he was sent a bound copy of the score back around 2013 so he certainly knows of its existence. Thanks for your comments- this video represents an important time in my life. A lot has changed thoughout the past decade- I haven't been in touch with the transcriptionist Ryan Yard in several years but I hope he is doing well. Jason and I are still in regular contact but haven't done any musical projects together in the past 5 years. I'm playing piano for a living in 3 bands. Don't have time for projects like this anymore so I look back on those days fondly.

@@GusFogle Back then, this seemed extreme to us, haha. Fond memories indeed, those rehearsals and everything leading up to the performance was so fun; I had an absolute blast. We didn't really imagine moving to much more demanding repertoire than this project (though Incantations was already under way), as it seemed quite the destination at the time.. This sure was a stepping stone for our individual journeys as musicians but turned out to only be the beginning.. Following this up with the Live performance of Incantations and two original album length works in less than a year was our wake up call from this, lol. From Mike Oldfield to revisiting Frank Zappa and onward into the works of Chick Corea and more in-depth into Allan Holdsworth's music, it has been one heck of a journey. Here's to the fond memories of Amarok rehearsals, which were truly the most fun and productive times.

As Gus stated above, he is playing professionally full-time and I, for the last few years, have been rediscovering my roots playing in larger wind ensembles once again. Returning to the environment and instrumentation I've missed for so long, I reminisce what from the very beginning made me the musician I am today and why I still love to play and perform. It's like revisiting home. Though our paths can differ for lengthy periods, it's a safe bet of Gus and I consistently somehow crossing paths in a musical sense again and another project will begin to brew at some point in the future, lol. Afterall, my first experience of Mike Oldfield was playing piano/tuba arrangements. There's possibilities, lol.

i was so sceptical about this when I first saw what you were trying to attempt. I mean, I was like, seriously, Amarok.. on piano and bass, only!! but wow just wow, you left me spellbound. Oldfield would be proud of this performance I am sure. Wow and wow, thanks you guys

My most sincere congrats to the three artists who made this possible. I understand from the comments that this was a one time thing and that you were young and that this probably won't happen again. Well, I don't think I'd take a plane from Spain to the US for watching you live but surely would go to anywhere in Europe if you were to tour in this side of the pond. Also I belive if there is a next time you will make sure it gets properly recorded, both video and audio. Thank you so much for this inspiring last hour. Amarok is my favorite 'song' of all time since I listened to it 8 years ago (I'm 32 now) and listening to you playing it was definitely worthwhile. Wish you the best!

I play solo electric guitar and I've been one of the greatest Oldfield's fans for nearly 45 years. I consider Amarok one of his best and most daring works to date. The guitar work in this piece, with all kinds of guitars, is unbelievably complex and difficult ( maybe even more than Mike's many other masterpieces ). So, this fantastic transcription and performance of Amarok only for piano and bass is also almost unbelievable. And this mostly considering that all parts had to be played only on piano. I think that's much more difficult. One thousand congratulations to both of you for this superb and extremely daring work. Truly wonderful ! All the best ! P.S.: But what amazes me the most is how Ryan Yard was able to write this score only by ear with that awesome degree of perfection. What an ear !

Thank you for your kind comments Nelson. Ryan indeed gave a tireless and bravura effort in his transcription of Amarok. During the arranging process for our performance, Jason and I did find some minor errors throughout his score which we tried to correct to most closely reflect the original recording.

A truly awesome work, really almost unbelievable. And your performance is amazing, fantastic. Once again one thousand congratulations ! I don't even think of trying to play something from Amarok on my guitars, though I play some Oldfield pieces.

Sorry for my bad english. This is my favourite album from the great composer, Mike Oldfield. But I've never found some live performance of this so far. I was very amazed, when I noticed your video. Your talent is extraordinary. Only two instrument, and this great music is absolutely enjoyable. YOU ARE AWESOME! Thank you and best wishes from Hungary.

I can't believe what you guys achieved with this. Jason, just for knowing your cues you have all my admiration. Gus, my jaw dropped when I saw how you played the finale of the "first side", playing that minimalist ostinato with your right hand while playing the melody with your left hand. AWESOME! Congratulations for an amazing feat!

Thank you. I was VERY young when this was recorded. Would love to do a modern, improved arrangement with better playing and audio quality.
