Mike Oldfield's music is not primitive rock n roll music to drink beer and sing along to in any bar. His music is very intelligent and considered music creation on a completely different level. Like Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach or Bethoven.

And he started this incredible orchestral masterpiece when he was just 17! A friend had bought the LP and said "you've gotta come and hear this!", straight to the record shop on my way home to get my own copy which was sold out, another 2 weeks before more came in. Many, many moons ago..... Now old and grey but it was a great time to be alive musically.

Spent countless hours under the headphones in the early & mid-70s listening to Mike Oldfield albums, memorizing every note. People need to appreciate the time and effort he put into his music, particularly with the technology of that time. It was like he was building a 747 in the 1600s.

@Aqua Fyre Oldfield. Although he has achieved significant success, he hasn't got close to the Beatles or Pink Floyd for eg and I don't consider his music inherently inferior to those groups output. I think he is a rare case of his music being too difficult for most people, they simply can't understand it.

I remember listening to an interview where he spoke about not being able to sleep, this was due to when he closed his eyes he couldn’t escape his brain being constantly filled with melodies and musical ideas. He said at the time it was utter torture, a condition that only the truly gifted suffer. He was only in his twenties at the time, I wonder if he’s managed to control it now. He’s an amazing musician and man.

I'll never forget the first time I heard TUBULAR BELLS. It was 1973, early one morning while I was still in bed. The less well-known Side 2 of the album was being played on a Monterey California FM radio station. I was mesmerized, and later that day I went over to Odyssey Records on Cannery Row and grabbed my copy. What memories... SIDE NOTE: This was well before anyone knew anything about _The Exorcist,_ btw, and I'm glad about that. I think getting to know the work without that connection is somehow better (Even though _The Exorcist_ is coincidentally one of my all-time favorite films.) Nearly fifty years later... Wow... Thanks for posting this...

....It was my very first LP in fact, aged 10. My father brought it along from the UK to Holland in '73. I first heard the entire LP on Dutch national radio (late at night when the best music can be heard on radio....) and was immediately struck by it. For me it stood out way above the "boring" pop-music that would be played on most radio stations, most of the time. I like Tubular Bells to this very day !

For anybody interested... our Italian commenter wrote: .. "TUBULAR BELLS ... positive, beautiful, refined sounds that go beyond Rock ... indeed ... Rock must say THANK YOU to this Opera. Sounds created by the Piano, Spanish Guitar, Mandolin, instruments that have an important history. And then there is the AUTHOR of this work, which needs no introduction. Over time T.B. has never had any rivals nor in similarity, so we find originality from start to finish. Personally this music makes me think of a walk with its Pic-Nic in the hills ... where the scents and sounds of Nature mix with each other."

My favorite part of this is when he forgets he's plugged in and has a minor mishap with the cord. I only discovered him within the past month, but to me this epitomizes who and what he is: too busy and full of ideas to bother with perfection. The _essence_ of what he does is perfect, so the flaws in the _execution_ only serve to remind me of his humanity, which gives his works a warmth I have come to love. He's an imperfect -- though impressive! -- vessel channeling brilliant things in from beyond.
