Enjoyed very much....big congrats to the young man....I personally enjoy it more when people accomplish long voyages on less expensive yachts...but never the less took great courage and determination.....cheers

If a picture is worth a thousand words - a book is worth ten-thousand. 'Sailing the Dream' is Mike Perham's 288-page personal account of his journey. The very first thing you will see, is that sailing is Mike's passion, Mike's love, and Mike's dream. His Dad helps him to the utmost, but from the time he is around six, his parents cannot keep him off the family's boat. Secondly, you will see, with amazing clarity, that Mike does not begin this journey on a shallow amount of preparation. His preparation, which his story accounts for, may be unparalleled in its breadth - both on the sea and in sailing school. I was disappointed this documentary did not catch more of his express action in sailing the boat, but, it's hard to film yourself manning the sails. If there was one thing that was clear in this book, it's that Mike knows how to man the sails! Congratulations Mike! I savored your story and learned a lot from you. Keep sailing. -GY

I give him props for this! Some people rant about the auto pilot & technology, but I betcha there were plenty of times when he had to deal with things that required quite a bit more than simply just pushing a button! We got to see about 50mins of video, but he was out there 9 months or 7 months if you don't count the time spent on land. The mental challenge is no easy thing to deal with either! I'm sure there's people who could not last very long by themselves in a cramped space like that. Technology aided him in a way, but that's still an achievement that's not easy to attain! So... That hug was well deserved!

Zac Sunderland bought his own boat under 6000 dollars working summer jobs and breaking his piggyBank. it was a 1972 production Islander in no condition to circumnavigation. Actually, its on sale right now on the interenet. Even after all equipped and now famous boat is still under 40K. All respect for this kid but look at his equipment and support. An open 50 race yacht that is rare and so expensive that some countries cant afford it. Comparing their boats is like comparing a Ferrari to a 1972 Ford truck. Although its a great achievement, Mike Perham was literally pushed trough with money and technology. Zac Sunderland hands down and by far #1 in my book.

It's the same with bicycling. I spent almost 5 years biking around the world because I loved to see other places, meet people, enjoy their food etc. So many now are racing around, head down to get so many miles in a day just to break a record. They completely miss the point of traveling and the same thing is happening in sailing.

I hate the comparisons between Sunderland and Perham. Sunderland's boat was a 36' family cruiser and he had a small budget. Perham had a racing type yacht with tons of dough to back him up. There is a night and day difference. Great life opportunity for both boys but seriously there is barely any comparison.

A tip is to stay away from the big traffic routes where the cargo ships are because theres often alot of trash and sometimes a container can fall of the cargo ship and if you run into a container theres a big chance that youll get a hull breach and sink.

I just want to point out that when I think of sailing, I don't think of somebody sitting in their cabin and talking to a camera the whole time, and when the weather and waves were the most treacherous, isn't that when you're supposed to take control of the ship manually because the electronic auto can't handle the strain? Also seems like he didn't even bother trying to check out some issues that came about with the ship during the voyage. Ps; I don't sail, yet.
@4618wayne10 жыл бұрын
Dreamr OKelly Pro auto pilots like what he had,namely NKE are leagues better than the Raymarine stuff you find on pleasure craft and will often out perform manual helming. Without such advanced pilots, fast solo sailing would not really be possible. The Vandee globe racers all use NKE and they go non-stop
@4618wayne10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hear ya on the noise electronic auto pilots make, but few windvanes can cope with downwind conditions. There's pro's and cons to everything!
@4618wayne10 жыл бұрын
Ahoy! I have sailed many different yachts and have found that downwind with a chunky following sea, the stern can get pushed about, irrespective of long keel or short keel. I have a racer cruiser and is very well balanced, especially up wind. A good mate of mine has a Hans Christian 41 and that is like on rails! Yet even he gets pushed about down wind. What do you sail?

Ballsy, BUT, alone on a boat uptop sailing harness on always. It is always the mistake of the experienced sailor who goes mysteriously missing, the principle of superposition, a wave comes from nowhere and flicks you out of the boat. You are not available to give advice and so it goes on forever. Also alcohol on a boat a definite no no under any circumstances only in a MARINA when moored up.

Sometimes the Guinness Book may have to protect people from themselves. Lets face it - how young should they allow/recognize children facing such truly dangerous perils? 14? 10? 6? No doubt with todays technology you could operate the boat remotely - perhaps stick a toddler in the cabin? This film might depict a boy trying to achieve his fathers dreams more than his own. Perhaps we should afford children the childhood they deserve before placing them at the mercy of the merciless ocean.

Somehow it's not Chichester or Moitessier... Fantastic achievement nonetheless, but I have mixed feelings. How much remote control from shore, the absence of sea trials and preparation, not to mention the choice of yacht........... Too many elements are wrong with the way this is portrayed. I wouldn't solo a design like that in the Irish Sea never mind the Southern Ocean. Too much tech to go wrong. Great job but also great luck.
@youyouulf10 жыл бұрын
Totally crap that this is a world record. Jessica Watson (Australia), 16, sailed around the world singelhandedly and nonstop, arriving back home May 15th 2010. Mike Perham's world record claim is totally crap. Still, his voyage is impressive, but stick to facts and don't lie about it!
@prenticedarren13827 жыл бұрын
What has the world come to? Spending 200,000 plus pounds for one teenager to follow a trivial pursuit that could easily have killed him. So what if someone is the youngest to sail solo around the world. Safety first is a sailors rule, so this whole voyage was counter to the spirit and ethos of sailing. What next? The fattest to sail solo around the world? Or the tallesst. Shortest. The whole thing is ridiculous over indulgence.
