I admire Mike's ability to deal with heights and remain composed and humorous. I would be frozen in terror.

I think he has gotten better at dealing with it due to all the times they stuck him up high (like the Mackinac Bridge). I was surprised when he was the one who said "Gotta do that" about the hang gliding, though.

It’s funny to me that I’ve spent months on end living at the depths of the sea, but the shear thought of a hot air balloon makes me so anxious to the point of diarrhea 😂😂😂😂

I’ve wanted to do both of these things for a long time. I did manage to go up in a balloon a few years ago, but it was just a quick tethered flight. By the time he finished the hang glider flight I was getting teary, seeing how moved and amazed Mike was. I want these experiences even more now!

As a person who is horribly afraid of heights one of the highlights of my life was taking a hot air balloon ride. I’d always thought it seemed like a beautiful experience but my fear overwhelmed me. My husband challenged that by gifting us a ride one Christmas. It took almost a year for me to book the flight but we went on a beautiful Fall evening and it was perfect, everything I’d wanted it to be. That started years of challenges to do the things that deep down caused me fear and I’m still doing so. I’m not an adrenaline junkie, it’s only to let myself know that I’m able to make reasonable choices to calm my mind.

That is why hang gliding is known as the ultimate high - no drugs necessary to soar all day long. Been flying since '77 and my longest flight to date, was 8 1/2 hours at Torrey Pines, CA, 10am to 6:30 pm. My favorite flight was at Crestline Park, CA, where I actually flew w/ a California Condor for a brief moment, while at ~10K ft, looking down over Lake Arrowhead. We eyeballed each other for maybe 30 seconds before it peeled off and below me and it was lost in the background. If ever you have the opportunity, go hang gliding - just like Mike - and I promise you will never forget the experience. Sky out!

How on earth do you hang glide for 8 hours OR get to 10k ft?!
@v.e.7236
@v.e.7236 Жыл бұрын
@@VitaKet The 8 1/2 hr flight went by surprisingly fast, like dream in memory. Torrey Pines has really stable air coming in at a fairly constant rate into the bluff and up, making sustained flight a breeze (pun intended). Getting to 10K ft wasn't quite as simple, but way more fun, as I rode a series of thermals up - that day was cookin' 40+MPH winds, gusting to 60MPH and the thermals were pumping along at a rate of 1K ft/min, easy. I was up there before I even realized how highI was. A gy flying a rigid wing delta kite flew by and told me the altitude - I was both stoked and a little frightened, but too young to give it too much consideration as I was on an extended adrenaline rush that lasted about the entire 4+ hrs of that flight. I had to fight to lose altitude and get back to the landing area back some ten miles or more west of my position over Lake Arrowhead. Meeting the condor was definitely the highlight and my most vivid memory.
@v.e.7236
@v.e.7236 Жыл бұрын
That 8 1/2 hr flight was a dream. It wasn't as difficult as you might think, especially at Torrey Pines, where the air comes straight into the sea bluff and up, making sustained flight a breeze (pun intended). At one point I was even able to snatch a lunch sack from my father's hand, at the edge of the cliff, to help sustain me. As for the 10Kft, I could have flown higher, had the sudden realization of both my altitude and my position not precluded any further altitude gains. Instead, focusing all of my attention on getting the several miles (10-15) back to the landing area I needed to get to, as I was above Lake Arrowhead. That was when I spotted the condor and all worries of getting back faded as we locked eyes.
