We have the same grandfather, thousands of miles away. Born in a cave in the late 1800's, he survived and raised his family through the depression through dedication and hard work. He died in 1964 and three of his sons took over his farm. One generation later, that family farm has grown to a 4 million dollar operation. Not gained from formal education, but dedication.

I remember when skills were taught in high school. Unfortunately, it was portrayed as the classes for kids that were not smart enough to take the 'college prep' curriculum. These skills classes were abandoned in the 80's. These should be brought back to high schools to expose kids to the value of this type of work.

I feel like you are exactly right. You shined the light on people so the rest of the world could see them -which made your light all the more bright. I am always proud of your achievements, awards, and/or recognitions-but it’s your light that is what makes me most proud. It’s the product of the passion you are bringing to the table -it’s your grandfathers legacy shining through. ♥️

I’m an Army veteran and 26 year member of the American Legion. My son, who is a member of the SAL, spent some time in college but decided to go to trade school and now happily works as an electrician.

It's NOT MISPENT career!! (did I spell that right...hold on, yep according to google it's right) Mike Rowe, you deserve the applause! Well done!
True story; In 2012, at age 58 I lost my job. When I went to the unemployment office to file for unemployment pay I was told that I didn't need to look for work as part of my requirements to get unemployment assistance. The reason, my age. They told me that I was unlikely to find work at my age so they waved the requirement to seek employment. All I needed to do was to put in two hours of work on the computer. This would require two visits of one hour each. My first hour I used to create 5 different versions of my resume to be used to actively seek employment even though I didn't have to. One week later I spent one hour playing games on the computer that they told me didn't have any games on it. Two weeks later I started my new job. It was by the way the highest paying job I ever had. I saved almost every dollar that I earned from that job and retired 4 years later debt free. Don't ever let anyone tell you there are no jobs. Take control of your own life because nobody else is looking out for you.

What a legend. People are still arguing against his simple logic, I think everyone is just looking for the quickest short cut. If they were smart they would listen and think. I guess it's just easier to whinge on social media than actually trying to change.

Children need to learn and feel the accomplishment of earning with their own hands and brain. I grew up with wealthy parents who earned with their hands and brain. And now I’ve passed that down to my grown children who are not afraid to think a problem through and learn from that experience from a job completed. My 2 older kids who have a college education and a job in their field of study with a GREAT income still will get their hands dirty, all sweaty and stinky to do a home/car project all on their own. Thanks to their grandparents who had to skills and determination passed down from their parents and grandparents. If we as parents fail to show how to think through personal projects and accomplish them then we as parents have failed. A simple fact of any skilled job/office or tech job is math. Key to everything in life with just a little bit of common sense, life will be so much easier.

How come he's getting this accolade never having served in the military, or even gone on a USO tour to support the troops? Is there even a veteran or military specific charity that he supports? I can't find any and I think this should have gone to somebody with a better track record for supporting veterans. Elvis served in the Army and Bob Hope went on USO tours every year, Mike does not measure up as a good example of a proactive supporter of our troops or veterans.
