And it was like the crowd from a Sunday-afternoon Phillies game at the Vet had been teleported to a field on the outskirts of a small town in Upstate NY... upwards of 40k people there. An amazing experience for me, all except for the sunburn :) .

With Derek Jeter's retirement I wanted to reflect on my baseball hero, Mike Schmidt. I was only 3 when Mike was a rookie so when I started playing little league his career started to take off. Whenever playing in the school yard with the strike zone chalked on the wall I pretended I was Mike Schmidt. So my first point of this post is to thank Mike for inspiring me to be an athlete. My second point is a little deeper. I idolized Mike for his baseball skill but my role model was always my father. I'd never look up to a sports professional as a role model outside of playing a sport. It's unfair to the athlete and the child if that is whom the child looks up to. Now I have children. I don't expect then to pretend to be me when swinging a bat or shooting basket. But I do hope that dedication to family and love and as Mike's speech mentioned positive encouragement teaches them to be their own role model and have confidence to do what is right I'll have my own hall of famers.

Patrick Gray When Schmidt was asked if Pete Rose should be in the Hall he replied, "He should have his own wing in the Hall." Schmidt played for OU Athens. A fellow Bobcat has to be right.

I lived in suburban Chicago till I was 9 years old in 1970. Then I moved to the Delaware Valley and gradually switched my support to the Philadelphia Phillies. I feel like I got to see perhaps the two best all-time 3rd basemen in Mike Schmidt and Ron Santo.

dapster Agreed. Brooks Robinson lovers' always forget that Mike Schmidt had A HUGE glove. Despite there being a TON of great baseball players, to me, its really difficult to pin ANYONE down as to being the GOAT at their position. THE ONE position where I think it can be said is 3rd base, and the man is Mike Schmidt.

Most are. But there's not many people inducted every year, unlike the other sports where it can be 5-10 per year. It's rare for baseball to have more than 3 or 4 per year, often fewer.
