Mike + The Mechanics

6 жыл бұрын

Official video for "The Living Years" by Mike + Mechanics. Released in 1989, this single reached number 1 in Australia, Canada, Ireland and the US, while it was number 2 in the UK, where it went Silver.
The song has been covered many times including interpretations by Alabama, Chris De Burgh, West End theatre star Michael Ball, Marcia Hines, Engelbert Humperdinck, James Last, The London Symphony Orchestra, Christian artist Russ Lee, Rhydian, John Tesh, Russell Watson, the London Community Gospel Choir, the Newsboys, The Isaacs, The Katinas, Japanese singer Kaho Shimada, Italian band Dik Dik and Michael English.
In 1996 the legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach declared "The Living Years' is one of the finest lyrics of the last 10 years." It was nominated for 4 Grammy awards in 1990 and won the prestigious Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically & Lyrically in 1989.
Lyrics:
Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door
I know that I'm a prisoner to all my father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage, to all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid that's all we've got
You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence
[Chorus]
Say it loud (say it loud)
Say it clear (say it clear)
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late (It's too late)
When we die (oh, when we die)
To admit we don't see eye to eye
So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts
So don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in
You may just be okay
[Chorus]
Say it loud (say it loud)
Say it clear (say it clear)
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late (It's too late)
When we die (oh, when we die)
To admit we don't see eye to eye
I wasn't there that morning
When my father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him
In the living years
[Chorus]
Say it loud (say it loud)
Say it clear (say it clear)
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late (It's too late)
When we die (oh, when we die)
To admit we don't see eye to eye

I was there, I watched my father die. It's ok that you weren't there. That will just be one of a million things you'll think of in the coming months, and try to beat yourself up with it. Don't. I was young, 13. I would dwell and agonize over stupid stuff like having spent the night with a friend instead of at my dad's. Let that shit go as soon as you're able. No one wants their loved ones to suffer like that, I'm sure your loved one wouldn't want you to either. Your grief will threaten to drown you every time it comes... Let it engulf you, feel it all, and as soon as you're able put it away. It'll come back, you gotta let it. My heart goes out to you.

My Dad was taken from me 10 years ago this year. I never could see eye to eye with him then, but now that I have a son, I have so much more compassion for my Dad looking back, and could not be more grateful for how hard he worked to take care of me the best he could, and to help me grow up to be a good man. I promise I’ll do my best for your grandson, Dad.

Same, but I was 9 or 10 at the time. He was only 42, or something like that when he passed away. Now I'm pushing towards 50, and have already lost one of my two siblings, my sister (oldest of us 3), who was also my best friend. She beat cancer, only to die of heart failure at the height of the lockdown, so I was sure it was covid, but nope. She just collapsed on her way home from the grocery store, and called emergency services on her phone for help, but it was too late. She didn't even get to turn 50, which would happen only a couple of months later, had she lived. That was 2 years ago now. R.I.P., sis, I'll miss you until my number is up...

30 years....30 YEARS, I've been angry at my dad after he and mum divorced and split the family. Then you grow up and one day it hits you that Dad was doing the best he could. I don't want to be left full of regret one day. Not just because of my own selfish emotions but I want my dad to know before he goes that I'll always be forever grateful for the times we had. I believe hes still hurting. My dad, the middle-class working man, family man, the real tough guy of society who never has gotten the recognition he deserves from the kids of his first marriage. I have made contact with him and am on the path of reconciliation. If you still have a chance, please dont wait until its too late.

It was 1988, I was in theJr high school choir when we learned this song. My father was dying from melanoma skin cancer. He was being cared for by Oregon science and health in Portland Oregon. He was at this last concert and I sang this song with every ounce of strength I had. My tears and his flowed freely that night

It goes both ways. I lost my son in April of 2023. He was 25, and i miss him every day. So many things i thought I had time to say. As dad i tried to be stern yet loving. Never miss an opportunity to tell someone how much they mean and how much you love them. He knew, but there was still more .

I'm so sorry for you, but I bet he knew you loved him. Sometimes, we forget all the times we showed love! And being stern isn't always bad if necessary. We don't let our children run into the street or put their hand on a hot burner. A certain amount of discipline is what gives kids direction. They need & like that bcs it shows them that you care. Be blessed, ericfairchild5431

It is a tough request - try to focus only on the wonderful times spent with your mothers. Only the positive and bright things, no guilt, no loss. Only love for what you DID get the opportunity to experience by having a mother. ☮️

My father said across the dining room table when I was 16 did he love me, his answer was no. Those words were devastating even to this day I'm 70. The day before he died in the hospital he grabbed my hand pulled me close and said he loved me. Those were the last words he spoke. I have multiple homes and plenty of money but I would give it away to here him say those words again.

My Dad passed July 28, 2011 he was 97 years old. I think at that age you expect and have tried for a long time to prepare for the passing of a a parent. But you cannot ever prepare for such a loss. It has been 13 years since, and my sisters and I still feel the pain but what comes now is the good memories and all he taught us. Now we are trying to pass it to our grandchildren and hope that we are remembered as we remember dad. We love you daddy, Till we meet again.

My father passed in 1988 of lung cancer. As a family we made his last days as comfortable as we could, given the circumstances; I even gave him his last shower; went with him on his last ride. Those were the hardest 3 weeks of my life. After he passed I was too exhausted to fully appreciate what had occurred. I was numb for nearly a year....until this song aired in 1989. The floodgates opened.

It wasn't my dad, it was my brother. We'd had a big stupid argument, and I acted out terribly. I'm lucky that it was my fault, because it makes it easier to apologize when there is less ambiguity. I eventually admitted my fault, we put it behind us, and it was such a relief. We lost him a year later. I'm so thankful I made amends. I can't speak to those who have been wronged, but if you were one who was wrong, and it's just pride keeping you from admitting fault, please make the move. I'm so thankful I did. Love you forever, Bro.

I was in the same boat, my brother was also my best mate and , well we had words over something stupid and didn't speak for months , on several occasions i tried to fix things but he just kept throwing it back in my face until i gave up, then in the early hours of one morning i got the call he was being taken to hospital , as his executor and only family member i had the unenviable task of removing his life support after a week, the guilt i carried nearly drove me to suicide, i'm so glad i had someone who noticed and helped me back, that's 11 years now and i still miss him terribly.

My father passed away 24 years ago. He lived to see me get married and complete graduate school . He visited me from the Caribbean.I remember driving downtown with him and smiling at how amazed he was that I was driving a car and I knew exactly what I was doing and where I was going. He kept asking me how I knew where to go . We sat in my poorly furnished apartment and my eyes welled up with tears because I could tell that he was ill. Months later he would be gone. I played this song and lingered in my grief. My dad is gone but what he taught me lives inside of me.

With out a doubt this is one of the best, if not the best, song written about parental relationship, regret, wisdom and hope. It should be listened to by every man who becomes a father , every son before they become a man , every father and son before they regret.

My dad worked me like a borrowed mule here on a dairy farm in mountains of east Tennessee. He also kicked my arse regularly but I loved him even when we didn't see "eye to eye" and had our falling out when I joined the military. We made up later in the ways that men make up...with grunts and shared labors. He died too young of Alzheimer's at age 66. I am 60 now and glad that we had those caveman grunts and labors together. I regret that he didn't remember me when he passed. Soon I will follow him. I hope my children remember me as fondly as I remember him and forget my mistakes and errors. I hope to see you in heaven dad. Regards, 6 out

@@richhunter5013 I wish you did too. My dad was a hero. A quiet, honorable, generous, kind man. He taught us, “ If not me, who? And if not now, when?”. The worst thing I ever heard him say about anyone was “ He don’t know nothing, and he don’t know he don’t know nothing”. 22 years in the air force, but teaching was his love. He retired with honors from over 30 years teaching young sight and hearing impaired people trades. 30 years as captain of our local volunteer rescue squad. The world lost the best when he died.

I'm 74 and feel the same. My father was patient & understanding for all the crazy things I did as a kid. Thanks dad, I miss you.

This song is the best ever to describe that your parents are the most important 2 persons in the world. I lost my dad 2 years ago and now, my mother has Alzheimer and she barely recognize me. Tell them often that you love and thank them for what they do for you before they go away for always.

Same here my father was 72 and passed away from a brain aneurysm,I was 50 but you would think I was a little kid and for 8 days was a living hell watching my best friend and the best father anyone could ask for and miss him everyday and always shed tears when I think of him.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how hard you try to get close to your father, some of them are just plain narcissistic. So you live with that pain of never feeling loved to the point of feeling hated. You must break that cycle if you have sons' of your own. I may never know what it feels like to have a father who cares, but my sons' and grandsons' damn sure do. I really don't know how I'm going to feel when my father dies, I think I will finally be at peace.

This is a timeless masterpiece! My mom passed away in 2019. I’m so thankful for her blessings and the love she showed me growing up. I’m her youngest of 3. She was my hero! My dad is still with us in 2022! Be sure to tell them you love them as much as you can. Love conquers all! I miss you mom! ❤

Sad some don’t see what they have with you while you’re living. They need to open their eyes and grow up. See what you do have and be grateful! 😪💙

I lost my Father to Cancer, watching him go from a strong man, to nothing to be skin in bones, got the diagnosis, and within 4 months he was gone. Forever changed my life. I miss you daddy, and we love you ❤
