What an era to have been skating. 87-90 was the best!

These two were being pretty creative considering how little they had to work with (as far as obstacles).

Yes they are, especially Mike V. "always adapt to the environment", as he told at the Nine Club...

Damn.. That whole setup/scenario reminds me of Skate Night on Wednesdays, at Classic Skating in Sandy, UT. 1988-89. Ron Allen, Matt Hensley, just to name a couple. Fun as fuck.

Dressen goes big with style, but Mike V. does way more interesting things once he gets warmed up.

So if I remember right Dressen was riding for Dogtown and Vallely was riding for P/P. How did they end up doing a demo together?
@clytor5 жыл бұрын
Great question. Same wheel sponsor? I can't remember.

I'll hit up Mike V. on his channel when I get the chance.

@@stephenloflin9984 i was thinking this same question & to my mind the only answer, is that, like mentioned right below, the only sponsor they shared in this era was santa cruz speed wheels, hence, the Speed Freaks video from 1989...Vallely still looks like powell peralta era vallely tho, and, knowing that powell (back then, dont know about today) would never, ever, allow one of their riders to use any other wheels but powell wheels im thinking this was the very, very, super early days of mike v being off powell/left powell with mullen, & he was either a free agent for a very, very short time, or this was THEE very beginning of the SMA/fledgling world industries days.....mike has also ditched the airwalks & is wearing hi-top nikes....on ur other vid the SMA Hobo tour one he has his trademark converse all stars by then that hed use for a few years straight.....so......im thinking this video captures the moment of mikes transition from powell to “world” (or, sma, which would very shortly become world via sma-world as it was briefly called)

To do kick flips with those boards back then was like trying to Ollie with a Variflex board

I haven’t heard the name Variflex in years.

Mike V was even doing half cab flips with that deck in Public Domain too! That’s gnarly!

What’s insane is that Mike V was doing half cab flips with that heavy plank back in ‘88?

Mike V's presure kickflip at the end of the video makes no sense to me. It looks like his toe hits the heelflip side and it kickflips. Must be camera tricks cause that really looks like f-cking magic.

Kind of a shit course, wonder why they put those ramps so close to the crowd on the edges? The guys did a good job with what was there, must be a lot of pressure putting on demos. Vallely's physical presence and style is awkward, but he's a great skater and does a lot of impressive tricks.
@Royfokker7314 жыл бұрын
@pjchmiel They were pretty small, they coulda set them anywhere they wanted. This demo is just pretty lame all around.

It’s crazy how much better Mike V was compared to Tommy Guerrero during that time. It’s like if Mike V was a 10 Tommy Guerrero was a 4
@augustvong70572 жыл бұрын
No. Guerrero could do incredible wallrides and had higher jump ramp ollies, and could skate transition well. At the time he was a better contest-skater. Mike V must be one of the most interesting demo-skaters, though, with a very deep bag in both flatground and jump. Always giving his all. V probably was at his best in the 90's, but considered "old school"?
@montanaplease2 жыл бұрын
If you think about it the best pro woman skater today could beat Tommy Guerrero in his prime yet no way could ever be Mike V in his prime
@augustvong70572 жыл бұрын
@@montanaplease TG:s prime was probably 34 years ago, and skating has changed much since. Mike V never managed to beat him in a contest as far as I know, despite having a greater potential. Check out Savannah Slamma 1-3 for example. Man or woman, not many pros will beat Guerreros jump ramp ollies yesterday, today or tomorrow. The video parts back then was usually recorded in a few days.
@montanaplease2 жыл бұрын
No way there’s not a single pro out there right now that wouldn’t be able to beat Tommy Guerrero in every single aspect of his skating career. I guarantee you there’s an eight year old boy out there that could do more than Tommy ever could do
@augustvong70572 жыл бұрын
@@montanaplease Yes, they can do a lot of technical stuff, in slow speed, 34 years later. But Guerrero skated street faster than anyone else, a pioneer in that regard, and going off on a jump ramp, not many pros at the time were close. Jason Lee and Mike V, perhaps. But they never managed to beat Guerrero at the contests in the late 80's ... Do you even skateboard? It's kind of disrespectful to the sport / art to not know the history, and it's pinoneers.

FOR CHRIST’S SAKE! If you are going to import interlaced NTSC video footage into a computer and edit it, DEINTERLACE THE VIDEO and export the digital video as progressive scan. No one wants to watch video that looks like it was recorded through rippled potato chips!
