Saw Watt play this hyphenated-man in its entirety for free at a public park in San Pedro. Was an abstract painter accompanying him throughput. Crazy cool. Also saw Mike at my first live show ever attended when I was just 14 in 1993 w/ fireHOSE. Very fortunate on those occasions.

I've seen Watt a million times since the early '90s. Dude's a freaking genius.

I've only met him once as his music imo has only been half as funky since D. Boone died. Nice guy, really, really into bass playing. My best friend and I saw Firehose and Watt was in the audience watching his GF play bass, my friend and I struck up a conversation and when he found out I too played bass he forgot all about my friend... lol I'll bet he's on the spectrum. This song kicks it too though.

I like how the elements of both Minutemen and Firehose are distilled into this song. Bass as funk bottom but also talking thunder broom. Having seen Firehose but not Minutemen I always loved how the power trio live can really keep all 3 elements in balance. Unlike rock heavy groups where guitar is completely overwhelming the bandwidth (Sorry Dinosaur Jr.) the bass here is not relegated to just support but full on raging machine. Love the power of Dinosaur Jr. bands but bass is a mighty colorful instrument in its own right. Watt really spiels his stories with bravado and humor. He is a working class hero and player for life.

I got lucky and caught Watt playing bass for J. Mascis circa 2000... best of both worlds, as they did both Dino and MM tunes (along with stooges and others)

@@bulldogbat - That is cool. What the Stooges did was so powerful and simple it’s cool how Watt went into playing with the Stooges with such dedication and respect. I like Dino Jr. songs, I know how much Watt appreciates that powerful guitar of both. What’s interesting is how with Watt’s bands the bass is always as expressive and powerful as any guitar but on a different frequency. He just makes the bass talk and hold down grooves and no other bass player does it as well. Minutemen were all about each element not dominating the other and that made for bass as an equal to guitar. Really, in truth, if Watt’s the bandleader he is playing lead bass. Everything else is in its wake.

Got to see them perform hyphenated man in houston a few months ago. One of the best shows I've ever been to. These guys are fucking awesome.
Damn, wish the rest of this was up on KZbin, so much more lively than the recorded version.

Saw fIREHOSE in 1987 and proceeded to go to 50-or-so gigs in the ensuing 2 - 3 years. This is excellent music here and it's an excellent album. The fIREHOSE reunion effort was unfortunate, but hey, you can't have a perfect career.
