Mike, in addition to everything you said, I have an experience to share with you. When I was 65, I couldn't remember clearly at all. Medically, I had brain fog, prediabetes, and high blood pressure. I was making plans to stop driving because my reflexes were slow. About this time, I read the book, Wheat Belly, and discovered the Keto diet. I changed my diet immediately. I am now 73, all my symptoms and diagnoses have disappeared. No diagnoses, no medicines, no more brain fog. I'm driving with total confidence, at least as much as one can have in the crazy Panamanian traffic! Removing sugars and carbs from my diet has been lifechanging. For mental clarity, two supplements that I wouldn't want to be without are Black Seed and MCT Oil. Words are easy for me to remember now, and my Spanish studies are going so much better than before. Thanks for another good video!

You cracked me up! "I don't know if I'm making sense" totally made sense. Language is about heart and culture so to me it is natural to connect it to your heart and your culture. I do the exact same thing. When i was trying to get formal/informal conj I taught myself "the s is rude to 's'trangers and 's'eniors". It worked! eventually it came naturally and I don't do it anymore. Great video...not crazy. 👍🏼

You're right about the connection thing and learning. I'm about to sit for my third CPA exam (there are four total and take about 400-600 hours of studying to pass) and that is how I've learned so much material in so little time. You can't just memorize audit/finance/business/tax stuff because you'll be thrown off anytime the question changes (in the case of language it's structure changes). I'm going to learn Spanish this way too. Thank you for all the tips! Also my brother learned tons of medical terminology in eight weeks by making connections to silly words. Your story about pissing on the floor made me think of him haha.

Halfway through this video right now and I do similar things. For ‘feria’ (slang for cash in some places but also a fair) I always think of needing cash for The ferry we used to get on when I was a kid & you need cash at the fair. It sounds weird when you say it out loud but in your own head it makes perfect sense and it helps. Might have to plagiarize this video and make my own similar one 😂 side note I just learned the word pedagogy.

Thanks Mike I do this with what are difficult words for me e.g the verb Salir, i think of a salad leaf - leave (go out) and maybe umbrella verbs like llevar which I call the 'burden' verb because in the vast majority of cases the action of the verb involves a burden on the 'doer'. e.g. driving / carrying / wearing, even describing shouldering responsibility to name a few. It sounds a bit 'gimmicky' but if they work for people they are great devices, I think. I remember some time ago when i was studying Italian someone actually wrote a course book using similar memory links for the language. Sounds like you already have the material for a book.

Yeah Bro, that's a great way to learn and is taught by many memory experts. It's all about connections. I think I do it subconsciously as well but if I put a focused effort on it then it would probably help exponentially. My issue is really the comprehension part. I get the idea of what's being said but I don't always know word for word what's being said, if that makes sense. I can have a conversation for an hour with my online tutors with no problems but the real world is a little different.

Right here. This video. I've watched probably a dozen of your videos, but this is the one that got me to buy your book. The one that made me notice you initially is the one where you're in Cartagena (I think), and you talk about how being there is great for helping you practice Spanish because of the constant hawkers on the beach. I've been to Cartagena before, and absolutely hated the constant pestering. Your unique take and positive spin on something like that is what made me think you had more to offer than the norm. I agree with what you're saying on building connections, in whichever way someone goes about it. I'm still early on my journey on learning Spanish, but from the advice from one of my oldest friends; it's important to submerse yourself in the language. Doing so from my understanding will gather connections in context, sound, and visual. For me I've been switching from primarily duolingo to listening to Pimsleur/3 minute Spanish on Spotify to practice listening, using Anki flash cards that have the visual image of the word or phrase so I can connect it to the idea rather than translate it from English for the words I am learning through those audio lessons, and playing some video games in Spanish to get further context implicitly to trick my brain to study while having a little more relaxing time.

I've also had a similar experience on some words as well. Such as the word for Scratch being "Arañazo", and the word for Spider being "Araña". A spider bit me, and it looked like a scratch, so I connected the two words together especially since they share a subset of letters, though I don't think this is a good learning way for me as I'm afraid I may confuse words if I go about it this way. All of our brains work differently. :)

They are very similar words but aren’t the exact same like some other cognates in English/Spanish

Words ending in ‘tion’ in English, end in ‘cion’ in Spanish. Got it. Should have been obvious to me but I didn’t realize that. Great tip!

Not for all, but for the harder ones to remember. Now I don't have to do this at all.

I can't specifically address this topic in a sense. Basically for me is just using the word over in different situations. When you get to 3 to 6 word syllables, it is hard to remember. I do not do any associations, it is that some words just obsort better than others. Verbs I have no problem with because verbs are used all the time. It is just a matter of using a verb, noun, etc over and over and over. resbalar...to slip deslizar...to slid derramar...to spill derretir...to melt examples of hard to relate to English words or events. You just keep using to stick in your head. Not an easy task for the average! Good stuff!

Very good points here and I agree some words are just difficult and the repetition is the only way to get them down.
