Totaly agree with you at 1.08. I was in my local park 2 weks ago (without my camera!) and had time to kill. 8.30pm ish, big sky with my local power station in the middle distance and the sun going down behind me. Sunny, then a downpour, then bright sun again, double rainbow, wondeful cloud formation, a beautiful sky. But then all of a sudden the light changed and the sky took on a blue i have never seen before, People stopped walking and stared at the sky It was amazing amazing. And it lasted about 30 seconds. Good Evening Mike (I am in Chicago)! I just wished to say thank you for all of your hard work in producing, sharing, and encouraging that you do with these videos. I just picked up my first serious camera (a Nikon D3400) approximately 2 weeks ago, and I have been watching your videos and tutorials more or less nonstop since...Already I find myself taking better and better photos and while no means an expert, I am progressing at a faster pace than I had anticipating simply by careful attention to and appreciation of your videos. You have a gift for explaining the minutia and distilling it into a format that is easy to process and apply (though it is such a large body of work to be able to internalize it all at once, which is not your fault at all!) I have recommended and shared your videos with as many people who have expressed even the slightest interest in going from "snapping a few pictures" to "shooting amazing photographs" as possible. Even if I am never able to approach the level of professionalism that you muster, I am able to appreciate the care and patience you demonstrate in your videos to encourage us to try, and in a world filled with negativity everywhere, it is nice to find that rare human who induces a sense of positivity. Thanks again, Rick

Thank you Rick. Delighted you're enjoying it all so much. You said "such a large body of work to be able to internalize it all at once" You cannot internalise it all at once. I'm sharing what has taken me since 1993 to learn and have been doing it every day. Learning photography takes time and learning things one step at a time. There's a hell of a lot of information out there but knowing which bit you need 1st is confusing. Hi Mike, thanks for another really helpful video. When shooting directly into the sun, lens glare is always inevitable, even with a lens hood. However I didn't see it in any of these shots. How did you manage to get the shots glare free?
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ozturk Aker. Lens flare isn't that predictable. It depends on the angle of the sun to the camera and in this case there was a lot of haze in the air abd very little direct sunlight. Also making sure the lens is spotless helps reduce it... MIKE

As usual you are very good at the subject. I am your big fan over 2 years now. You have the most helpful approach towards photography. Other just keeps talking about gears and their functionality, which most of the hobbiest/starters like me cannot afford. Thank you very much. One question always come to my mind is how to decide aperture. I understand for more DOF we need higher fstop number, whereas in this video you changed from f16 to f18 and then I was confused what did you notice to make this small change. Also how do you decide where to keep your focus point so that you ensure front to end sharpness? do you take some tries?
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kapil. The whole which aperture to use is too big a question for a KZbin comment. basiclly it will change accoring to what you want to achieve. I was using f16 most of time because on wide lens everything from a few feet in front toinfinity will be sharp. i went to F18 when I was hoping to catch a sunburst effect, but only got a little bit on the edge of the clouds because there ws too much haze in the air... Couple of questions please - what were you focusing on in the shots with the two derelict windmills? Also my camera (Nikon) doesn't have anything called 'evaluative metering' - what should I be using for sunsets please?
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
I was focussing about the same distance away as i did inthe one with the red arrow for all shots RobertSE6. There's not 'Right' metering mode, only the one you prefer to use. I like evaluative personally but others will have their preference. Not sure which Nikon you have or where it to find evaluative on your camera but my nkions have always had evaluative. On my D600 you change metering modes with the metering selector button just behind and to left of shutter button. Hope you find it... MIKE

@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Salman Rashid Eon. I suggest a wide to mid zoom so you have as many focal lengths covered as possible in one lens which will cost less than having lots of different lenses. I'm sorry I can't suggest a particular lens because I only know the Fujinon and Nikkor lenses I use. I don't sell cameras so have no idea what's on the market. If you're a student who's learning and don't need super high res super sharp files at the moment just buy what you can afford. ... MIKE

Hi mike thanks for the video I know this is generally about composition but in this circumstance which metering mode would you use? and where would you take an exposure reading from? I always thought it was better to expose for highlights but I notice in one of your videos that you say bringing up the shadows too much can create noise... but I find if you let the highlights burn out on a sky like this one you end up with a lot of "white" or colourless areas in the sky and even in post it is hard to bring them out without overdoing it I don't always find the histogram reliable if there are a lack of colours in the shot it can be very peaked towards the middle and unreliable for exposure information what would you consider the better option? Slightly more noise or areas of sky without colour it's subjective I know but the thoughts from a pro would be helpful thanks, jon
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon. Forgive me but there's too much here for me to answer in a single KZbin comment. I always use evaluative metering but you can use whichever you like. If you use spot you must remember to think about where to meter from. I adjust exposure according to the histogram which I assure you is 100% reliable when you know how to read one. Please ignore that phrase "correct goes up in the middle" - sorry it's complete BS. Histograms are a graph of the tones in an image and will only go up in the middle if the scene is made up of mid tones. Colours won't affect a tonal histogram, only an RGB histogram. If the tonal rage is outside the histogram you can only shoot multiple exposures and make an HDR. Hope this helped. I suggest you take a look at my 5 week Beginners Course because I promise you'll get clarity on this and so much more, without being confused with things you don't need to know about yet. Please check out a free sample at link below... MIKE www.photographycourses.biz/UBC
@xgreenjacket7 жыл бұрын
Mike Browne Thank you for your detailed answer much appreciated. Yes forgive my terminology I had meant to say tonal range rather than colour range so I understand what your saying. and I gather it doesn't matter if the histogram is squashed together in the middle due to lack of tones as long as it's not at the darker end or the brighter end then the exposure should be good but thanks again for helping to clear that up
@jeffchandler82777 жыл бұрын
Hi mike, I am relatively new to photography, and I suppose like many, I bought a camera thinking I would go out and take fantastic photos, without realizing how in depth the subject is, from the camera to post processing, so having the attitude to never give up, I got on KZbin and studied for hours and hours, without KZbin I suppose the only way is photography classes, I have to say from a novices point off view your videos are without doubt the most informative, I'm not calling all the other photographers on KZbin because they are fantastic, but they talk as if you already understand everything about the camera, I needed to be taught from scratch, and your videos did just that, so I would like to say thank you. P.s I live in malaga Spain, if your ever over here and want to see places to photograph, just send an email I will be happy to oblige

Got tons on my plate for next 18 month / 2 years as we build new online training centre and I have 3 more multi week courses to complete. Afterwards i'm going to put some more workshops together and Spain is somewhere that interests me a lot... MIKE

Mike, in Sept 8hr lay over at Gatwick Airport. Any near by towns I can take photos of interest ? I have 2hr Max.
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Sorry Art, apart from going to the airport once in a while, I don't know the area at all. Can only suggest you Google for attractions in the area... MIKE
@gillfield16627 жыл бұрын
Hi Art! If you have 8 hours you probably don't want to travel too far so I if you are looking for a town try Hosham. It is an old market town so some interesting buildings, bandstand etc. if you are there on a Saturday or Sunday there is a market so some fun street photography and there is a park in the centre of town for some more "green" shots.....There are also small villages nearby. Not a huge amount but a few nice shots are possible depending on what you are looking for.....Either that or look up national trust properties, there are a few close to Gatwick and you can head to the old houses and gardens with the camera.... Enjoy and hope that helps.

hey mike is there any reason why you focused on the floor? might seem like a silly question.
@Marius-Cristian7 жыл бұрын
At f.16 if you focus at about 3m in front everything up to infinity is gonna be in focus.
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Hey TeeHTravel It's as MC Hagianu said above. Short lens + small aperture only need to focus a few feet away and everything will be in focus. - MIKE

honestly saying sir I have been waiting for ur videos for 2weeks&u came yet another fabulous video sir...I'm a beginner.Please tell me on which mode u take ur awesome sunset pictures?p or aperture priority mode or full manual mode?what light meater&white balance u use sir...?anything way thanks again...u r best teacher sir.
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
I use aperture priority mode bit it doesn't matter which you use. they all do the same things. Metering is evaluative. Have a look at the article that goes with this video on my site for more information. Link in video or below... Do you shoot in AWB or use kelvin mode?
@MikeBrowne5 жыл бұрын
It depend entirely on what colour light I'm shooting in and what the subject's primary colour is Jose Bueno. Generally I avoid auto because it changes if there's a lot of strong primary colour in an image. EG a lot of strong red the camera doesn't know it's meant to be red so it trys to get rid of it by adding green tones. In daylight I generally shoot 5600K , tungsten I use the preset etc - but not always. It changes according to the situation... MIKE

You should try Okinawa one day. You will love it! I have some pictures of Okinawan sunsets I like to call "Organic Egg Okinawan Sunsets" because the orange-yellow combinations are unbelievable!

Hello Mike, why didn't you use a tripod or a gnd filter?
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Hi. Because I didn't need to in this case. - MIKE
@markmuller30867 жыл бұрын
Mike, Thanks very much! Question: what is the "subject" here? The colors from the sunset? The windmills? The salt ponds or their lines? This is what I struggle with: clearly defining my subject! For sunsets I think most times it is the sky and its colors. If that is the case here, then what role are the salt ponds, and the windmills? They would be secondary, and I would ask myself do they add or detract from my subject? But, I'm not so sure you would say the color of the sunset is you subject! Thanks for a great video nonetheless. I like you showing the alternative perspectives.
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
In this case subject is the whole scene. Foreground lines lead to windmils with sunset as the backdrop. There's no rightor wrong, only what you like. You can change emphasis around the scene by exposing for different areas or the way you choose to develop the raw. If you're signed up to my newsletter there was an article about this that went with the video notification. I showed 4 different versions of the same shot. What is the cool photo screensaver you have in the background of this video? I've searched for it on the internet without success.

Hi Steven. It's the standard Shifting Tiles screen saver on Mac computers. Point it at a folder of your favorite pics and away it goes... MIKE

Why are you using f16? With 16mm on an APS-C camera you have pretty much everything in focus at f8 but without the softening of the image due to diffraction blur. I always wonder why so many photographers on youtube suggest having such high f-stop numbers to have "sharpness throughout the frame" without informing their audience about the trade-off which is unsharpness throughout the frame.
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Hi GenniDee. Mostly because I was hoping sun would come into clear patch of sky and I'de get a hint of star burst if it did. In the shot where I tried for some I remembered to go to F18. TBH I've never seen any image degradation at small apertures onthe Fujinon lenses. MIKE
@gennidee7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. Would be interesting to test that out with the Fujinon lenses which are said to be very sharp. I've tested it out with various of my lenses and the results were not always very clear but they all showed some degradation over f/10. Depends on the sharpness of the lens of course. The sharper the lens at its optimum aperture, the more likely you are to see diffraction because if the lens is not very sharp anyways a little bit of diffraction will not be noticeable. My Canon 15-85 was only a little bit blurry at f/11 and very blurry at f/16 and above. The Sigma 18-35/1.8 on the other hand is extremely sharp af f/2.5 ... f/8 and had noticeable degradation from f/11 on. I never had good results with any lens using f/16. That is on APS-C-sensors only. Or to be precise: Sensors with a pixel width of today's APS-C-sensors. Although some full frame sensors like the one in the Canon 5Ds and Sony A7r II are getting in that territory as well. The bigger the physical pixel size the higher the tolerable f-stop. For me the only reason I ever choose an aperture that high is when I really want those aperture stars.

Did you have an ND filter on the lens?

Hi Barry. No filter used. Just shot RAW and made sure the Histogram didn't clip at either end so all the data would be there... MIKE

Still using 16-55 f2.8? Have you been happy with it compared to 18-55 f2.8-4 ?
@MikeBrowne7 жыл бұрын
Ha ha Toni. It's avery good lens but I still prefer the 18-55 because it's smaller. This ws filmed shortly after coming back from Iceland and at that time my 18-55 hadn't yet been repaired... MIKE
