In this video I buy a 1990 JDM Suzuki Carry 4WD Kei mini truck. I have wanted one of these for the past 20 years now. In this video I cover an overview of the mini truck along with some repairs, how to fix the carburetor on a Suzuki Carry and start on the cooling system.
I will be posting more videos about this little JDM truck as I start using it more.
In the next video I will cover installing a timing belt and water pump, I will also be modifying the exhaust system.
Thanks for watching

In Japan all cars and trucks have an inspection sticker (called "Sha Ken) Yours is dated October of Heisei 14 or 2002. So basically you know it was used in Japan until then. I cannot see the kanji underneath well enough to read it. The yellow sticker indicated a "kei" or mini car which means it has the 660cc engine and specific length and width of the vehicle. It's possible someone already wrote about this as I didn't scroll down the comments very far. Almost every farmer and every carpenter drives one of these were I live in Kagoshima. They're cheap, reliable and the taxes and inspection rates are much lower than "regular" sized cars and trucks.

My father had a 1980 Suzuki truck like this on the farm we had. It was a 2 stroke, self mixing 550cc engine 4x4. I believe he lifted it about 2 or 3 inches with 30 to 32 inch mud tires. That thing was amazing as a farm truck, there literally was nothing it couldn't do better than any Ford or Chevy truck on the farm and mud that would easily sink a Ford or Chevy was a non-issue for it. We had it from 1983 to 1998 when he sold the farm and the little truck with it. It still ran great. I loved the fold down sides on the bed. Not saying I'd run it as a daily driver on the road, but as for industry/farm work, I'd choose these over anything. Basically a UTV on steroids is how I'd describe one.

Hi Mike! It would probably be a good idea to do some research on that tachometer. Most 'parts store' tachs are only set up for 4, 6 or 8 cylinder engines (2, 3 or 4 ignition pulses per revolution) so what may seem to be a "very high idle" at 1500rpm indicated, would actually only be 750rpm (if it is set to 6 cylinder)

You kept saying Carry, and I've heard them be called a Kei.. I was confused and thought you were saying Keri, like you thought the Japanese said it that way. There is no "R" or "L" in the name, but then I seen your comment spelling "Carry" and it made sense. Is it a Kei Carry, or the name in Japanese means Carry?
@Mikefestiva
@Mikefestiva 3 жыл бұрын
@@myconight The name Kei is a class of car, truck and vans sold in Japan and are (ultra compact) basically all Kei vehicles sold need to be 660cc or less and an overall set length to be sold as a Kei vehicle, there’s a range of rules and benefits that come with owning a Kei vehicle in Japan. The “Carry” is Suzuki’s truck version, Just like the F150 is Fords 1/2 ton, the Every is Suzuki’s Van version just like the Acty is Honda’s Kei truck. I hope this clarifies the terms used with theses trucks 👍

I am Japanese. I will tell you about the yellow display on the windshield. In Japan, there is a vehicle inspection system, and you have to pay inspection and maintenance and tax every two years. The deadline is October 2002 (October Heisei14year).It can be said that it is the most important notation for Japanese cars. The English translation of the kanji notation written below is "Light Motor Vehicle Inspection Organization". I want people to know kei cars in the world.

Speaking as an american who has lived in SE Asia for the past 6 years, it is amazing how funny Americans see the vehicles most of the world drive as "funny" and "unusual". We are the ones who drive huge trucks and SUVs. The rest of the world drive vehicles very similar to this Suzuki. These trucks are everywhere in the Philippines and Thailand. They are as common to see as the f-150 that u would see in any small mid western town
@J_Trask

I wish they were more common in the US so I could get one at a decent price. That’s why I don’t want to get a truck in the US, they are huge and in turn aren’t going to be good on fuel.

Also in the Philippines, these Suzuki vehicles are imported from Japan and they are already used. Mechanics convert these trucks/vans to left hand drive by cutting the dashboard and stuff. I had a Suzuki DA63T (Truck) and had it traded for a minivan DA64W (Wagon). Both 660cc.

Here's the deal on the Phillips screws. They aren't actually Phillips, they are known as "JIS", Japanese standard. If you look real close, you'll notice a dot on the head of the screw. Do yourself a favor and pick up a Vessel Impacta screw driver on Amazon. I use mine on everything now. Great little buggy. There is a place in VA imports them as well as these really cool micro vans. Good luck.

We ran this class of truck at NRTF Totsuka, Japan. Perfect for servicing HF antenna farm. Also had x-USAF 4 wheel drive pickup (runway follow-me) truck that we got from US military excess property depot. AF always replaced vehicles after a fixed number of years and USN had vehicles that were driven into the ground. USAF castoff was prefect for our usage. We just got funny looks because it was in AF blue but had USN markings.

Dude, LOVE the new Carry! I have a 95 and it's SO handy, I use it all the time on my farm! I too had been searching for a kei truck for YEARS and all the ones that I've seen were just beat up from the feet up. I feel like MOST of the trucks that get imported to USA are in okay shape for the most part, but then people get them and then trash them. I got REALLY lucky and found a super mint one (it's on my channel) with pretty low miles and it runs solid. Having said that, these are good trucks that once baselined, they'll last a long time and are durable. Looking forward to more videos of this baby, glad your having fun Mike!

That window sticker is the shaken certificate sticker. The 10 means October is the month the shaken test needs to be done, every other year. The 14 in the top right corner means heisei year 14, which is 2002 on the western calendar. So that was the last time this truck passed the shaken in japan. The shaken test is kinda like the CA smog test, but way more of a pain in the ass. They check not just emissions, but the whole car; anything from brake pad thickness, to even the headlights being aligned properly. 12 years is a pretty good run for a car here in Japan. Most cars usually don't make it past the 5 year mark.

I can not even afford a car... or really justify one as I was driving so little. I have an old 5.1 speaker set I picked up 20+ years ago and that muffler makes the subwoofer rattle my windows.

Before you pull the radiator drain it and dump in lime away and run to temp for an hour. Then flush the system and this will clean out the engine of all the rust and lime. Then install your new radiator and you will have a clean system. And old radiator repair guy taught me that little trick and has worked on many engines.

Toyota Prius transmission turned sideways both motors locked internally input shaft locked, use a controller as a ecu/gearbox aka run on small motor for town use - use large motor for highway both motors for passing/hills extra torque etc, it should fit under the Suzuki, if you can build a battery pack using electric bike batteries(another channel is doing it in a VW Bus).... just a thought....

Jis screwdriver will solve most of your issues with those carb screws. They look like Philips but they're a little different. A manual impact that you hit with a hammer can also be a lifesaver.

I live out in Japan and these little kei trucks are as common as bicycles out here. Every farmer out here has one. Bummer they aren't something you can pick up at a dealership in the US. A brand new one in Japan is under 9k. Super cheap. It's always cool seeing a full sized dirt bike strapped in the back of one of those. Takes up the whole bed. These trucks are the preferred ride if you've got a dirt bike that's not street legal.

I'll tell you why this is a great video.....It really illustrates how so many issues are centered around vacuum issues and carb adjustments. In the most basics, you have air and gas mixture. With EGR stuff, emissions add ons and vacuum hoses, things get to be a mess. Reminds me of my bugs and transporters that were late 60's - early 70's. To import them into California, VW had to add all this garbage like a NOX system, throttle postitioner and other garbage. My smoging ritual was this: time to smog- put the crap on, pass it, take it off. Interesting is my 69 bug passed emissions with flying colors with the emmisons garbage off. It would not pass the visual. Put it on and it barely passed. Great video Mike!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks I really appreciate it 🙂 I plan on simplifying the entire vacuum line system even more, I also have a manual choke I want to install, I don’t mind manual chokes like on a motorcycle. Take care 🙂

Those screws you were having trouble with might be Japan Industrial Standard (JIS). They’re slightly different from Phillips head, and are identifiable by a small dimple in one of the four corners of the cross. Using a JIS screwdriver might help.

Nice! I remember the first time I seen vehicles very similar to yours. I was just 16 and living in Okinawa, Japan. I didn't even know they existed. There was several different types and makes. It was 1972 73 and we had a VW bus and you can imagine how driving one of those on those very small streets that they had. Often we had to backup to let oncoming traffic by. I had hoped that I could have one for my first vehicle. As it was it was 1977 before I had my first car. It was a good thing I did not have one of those because I rear-ended a 1974 Chevy. I totaled out my car and two teeth from trying to eat my steering wheel. Whatever you do stay away from head-on collisions.. Even airbags and seat belts could not save you in any Collision like that.

That's a thought, I'm going out to my Hijet right now and just see what's involved to try that. I can tell you, it's not a fun time to have to be around the engine. I did put a timing belt in when I first bought it and that wasn't too bad but you don't want multi days leaning over the door jam. Oh yea, this is all true!
