Part 11 building a 4x4 mini articulating tractor. I’m using all Subaru drive train and a 420cc 12HP Predator engine to move this 4wd machine. In this video I start on ROPs, build a roof, make a tool box holder and mount a ammo box.
I use my Crossfire CNC plasma table quite a bit on this truck build, If you are interested in more info on these tables check out the link down below in the description.
This is the Crossfire CNC plasma table from Langmuir systems.

I watch a lot of build videos. A lot. And, I have to say this series is awesome. In the past I'd be silly enough to try and build one just like it, but I've since learned NEVER to mistake a KZbinr's skills with my own abilities. One day, though, I hope to have the combination of skills (and gumption!) to make something like this. Totally awesome! In the meantime, I have a lot of practicing to do. Thanks for the inspiration!

Mike very nice work. I have a tip for you to use when folding up boxes that are going to be welded. Drill a hole in the sheet where the corners will meet. The rule is it be the same as the inside bend radius centered on the corner. I use 3 times the metal thickness for the hole. The reason for the hole is you are not crushing metal when you are bending. The hole also helps prevent cracking at the corners when bending. You can make the holes bigger for use as a drain hole for things like you are doing.

Mike, get on McMaster-Carr and get a few lengths of pure copper bar stock and rounds. If you had been able to back that gap up with some copper bar it would have been easy-peasy and would have had a nice square corner inside with no melt through. The aluminum and steel will not stick to the copper if you keep it dirty and not polished. A bit of anti-spatter spray helps too. Once you get used to having copper around the more uses you find. My favorite trick is repairing a wallowed out key way. Just make a piece to fit in the key seat, clamp it down and fill in the crater beside it. Make sure to leave enough to get some pliers or pry bar on to get it out because it will stick a little. Usually a bit of hand filing on the key seat and diameter of the shaft is all that's needed. I have done this on shafts and even gears. It was a huge timesaver in plant maintenance when time was critical. Beautiful work as usual, stay safe and I will be looking forward to the next video! Hi Mike, I love your tractor. Thank you so much for sharing this. This is how Steiger got started, they built an articulated tractor using truck trans, diffs and motor. I have spent many hours ( lost count but hundreds ) driving articulated tractors including many on a 1976 Steiger Cougar and it is clear that articulated tractors have many advantages over other configurations. The fact that they don’t loose any pulling ability while cornering is a big one. Their ability to put power on the ground is legend. Your build has inspired me to attempt a similar project. A Subaru minus its engine is cheap and easy to come by ( Australia ). But: There are a few things I would do differently: Use a normal car type power steering pump for the steering. Ford tractors have done this for years. Surplus car power steering pumps can be picked up for peanuts and often already have a pulley and a tank. The Pivot: Move the top steering pivot point higher. Leave the lower one where it is but put the top pivot at about the height of the seat to give it about an extra 12” of spread. I realize that this could cause issues with clearance from the tipper body but not insurmountable problems. The steering pivot takes an absolute beating and this would strengthen it greatly. This would also make an opportunity to move the steering rams from the bottom to somewhere up top. Your use of the wheel brg assy for the axial pivot was excellent and should stand up to the punishment. I think that the tractor manufacturers use a short drive shaft with a universal joint at either end to negotiate the pivot. This negates the alignment issue and the angle through each joint is not as great. I will have to go and have a look at one of the tractors around the place to see just how they have done it. I would prefer a manual/pedal operated clutch so I could have the benefit of engine braking. More work I know but quite achievable. Lightening the flywheel would be necessary for this mod to make changing gear easier. I would suggest removing the old ring gear and machining away all unnecessary flywheel material. I would ditch the foot operated accelerator and have a hand throttle instead and a deceleration pedal in place of the accelerator. Any one who has used a hand throttle/deceleration pedal arrangement finds it vastly superior on a tractor. A deceleration pedal drops the revs when you press it, kind of like putting your foot on the brake. When you lift your foot, the engine revs return to the throttle setting. I think your foot brake and handbrake setup is excellent and absolutely worth copying. The Steiger had another great idea, the hydraulic oil tank was also the front chassis cross-member. A box of appropriate size could be welded up and used instead of a piece of RHS. This helps to lower the centre of gravity. Any thing that lowers the weight distribution without compromise is a bonus. Steiger’s hydraulic pumps were higher than the tank and suffered no problems from not having flooded suction. And, yes, I would have a hydraulic system separate to the steering. Y’ gotta have hydraulics. An inspection hole of 4” to 5” on the oil tank is handy for cleaning and pop a microwave oven magnet inside the tank to act as a metal trap. I wholeheartedly agree with your choice of engine and love your work with this build and look forward to watching more of your content.

Mike, the easy fix for the corner gap in your aluminum box is to clamp a piece of copper strap or bar in the corner and lay a bead over it. This is also good for welding sheets together as it keeps them from warping so easily, and the welds won't stick.

Right on Tom! That’s a good place to start, get some tools, start on some small projects, and keep working up to bigger challenges, before you know it you will be making all kinds of things. If you look back 5 years ago on my first KZbin video I built a sawmill from scratch, I had only a few tools, cheap Lincoln 120 volt welder. My old used metal cutting bandsaw, angle grinder and a hand drill. I was able to build it, it was a real challenge but I sure learned a lot. I just keep leaning more and pushing myself and taking on new challenges, like that CNC table, I had never drawn in any CAD programs before buying it but I figured it out, you will be able to figure it all out and develop you skills too 👍 Take care

Thank you for such a solid build.I wondered if you'd use the 'natural heat shield'from the engine to divert to the windscreen and to warm the 'cab'.It looks like you're set to enclose yourself through storms. /Cheap solution is 'pool pump'tubing and drill holes where you need air to clear windscreen and heat the cab.TY for this Awesome Build, and all you great vids.

Thanks for checking out my new video and commenting! Yes there’s plenty of heat that comes off the engine to heat the cab, I think that’s the simplest system, I do have a really small diesel parking heater that I’m installing under the seat, this way the cab can stay heated on really cold days even when it’s not running, for instance I’m out cutting firewood in the winter and want to warm up. Its been fun following this build. Educational too. Looking forward to your next build. Your interpretation of a SxS should be interesting.

To everyone that said why didn't he just buy something. 1- Why are you even here and what would you watch? Him riding around on something he bought....??? And 2- I guarantee you would have to go to Russia to find anything close to being built this tough lol. Great project man!!

Make some bottom die fillers for your brake. Bottom die width should be 8x material thickness being bent. This will make your bends more crisp. Love your videos!

Nice work on this project!!! You are a true craftsman. As a regular guy like yourself, who enjoys working on projects just like this, I really enjoyed watching this video series. I liked how you take whatever materials you have on hand and you make them work the way you need to. Doing all of it with tools and materials that a regular guy can afford. I cant imagine how much time it takes not not only build something like this, but also the time you put in to making these videos. Thank you for all your hard work making this!!!

picked up 34 glass window panes, double sealed with argon fill or whatever, 100$ for the whole load, usually 90$ each or more theyd be perfect for the glass portion of this build.. youd just have to drive to canada and sneak across the border twice
