Our local sheriff showed up at a handgun class, watched us shoot, congratulated us, and told us that he expects anyone with the relevant skills to protect their fellow citizens. "We show up to solve the crime. You're there to stop it." I love South Carolina.

I also live in S.C. The push back to open carry that I heard was stiff. Especially from Richland county. And at the same time says your car, is not a holster. My thoughts are that cops like the military follow orders. And like job security, and those above them are always career politicians. So if it comes down to the nitty gritty of protecting you in court. Or losing their career? I wouldn't expect the best outcome for you.

@@handled99 sorry to break it to you, but most cops aren't much above a private citizen when it comes to fire arms. And, in fact, it doesn't take much for a private citizen to be more proficient than most cops. With that said, I fully support cops having more training for handling high stress situations. I would love for most cops to be the M class you speak of.

I stopped flying years ago when bringing your firearm became untenable. When checking in for departure from SEATAC I opened the secure case of my properly stored and marked firearm for the requisite visual inspection. The airline employee told me to pick up the firearm and show it isn't loaded... in a crowded airport. Play that out in your head, just one other passenger reacting as the sheep react makes for very terrible day. I declined to handle the firearm very politely and the attendant lost her mind. She began berating which convinced me to take 2 steps back, hands clearly visible and ask for TSA to come over. TSA came over, closed the case, and carried it to their station as I followed. They inspected the firearm and determined I'd done everything correctly, shaking their head at the insanity of the airline. I made it home and haven't flown since. I'll drive well armed.

Mike this was an excellent video on how to determine whether or not to inject yourself into a situation like this. I live in the Phoenix area and was watching the local news last night on the incident at Sky Harbor airport. I watched the live video of a heavy set, middle age man run over to the young shirtless guy and hit him with a body block and then wrestled him to the ground. The older man then walked over and stood against the wall, while one police officer tried to subdue the shirtless guy, but was kicked off by the shirtless guy. Then about three more officers showed up, plus a pilot who was holding the shirtless guy's head to the ground. From the beginning of this take down the young guy was shirtless and shoeless, I did not see anyone remove his shirt or shoes. As the police finally had him cuffed and were removing him from the area the shirtless guy was yelling for them to kill him. It was reported that he was 21 years old and had two weapons. To me it looked like he was high on something.

14:08 Knowing what we know now about the Uvalde case and even what was easily discernible on the Ground. We saw one of the biggest acts of cowardice by Law Enforcement in the history of our Country, many of the parents were forced to standby as Law Enforcement gave the individual free reign to commit the acts they did . Those who ignored Law Enforcements orders and saved their own children . Faced far more resistance from Law Enforcement than the person carrying out the acts ever did , including after the incident as they harassed an threatened parents who had ignored their orders , exposed their lies , and made them look bad. For rightfully criticizing their cowardice and inaction. Further solidifying just how cowardly they were over all

The biggest problem with a civilian getting involved in an active shooter incident would be the risk of being shot by responding officers. My biggest fear as a LEO, shooting a good guy with a gun who is there to help. And it's not like TV where the TV cop always gives the bad guy a warning. And especially with an active shooter where the only job of the LEOs responded is to actively hunt the bad guy and stop them. That likely means they're going to shoot anyone with a gun who isn't dressed in a uniform or some sort of way to ID them as LEO. Anyone not in uniform who is armed is a target. As a full time trainer at an agency of 800 sworn LEOs for a while, I saw how trained officers reacted to these situations. So, now, as a retired LEO, and a civilian, I would have to assess the situation at the time and make sure, if possible, I call 911 and give them a description of myself to send out to responding officers. This would also be a good conversation to have with your spouse and other family members that may be with you.

Your gonna see,,that multiple officers arrive at a situation like that and most often don’t know each other so the only thing they’re seeing is the uniform and you know I think they’re trained to see what the other uniform in front of them are doing not so much as the person, I think it goes back to their everyday training where a lot of of civilians whether they know this or not have painted them as a target. And most often don’t believe that citizens have the excessive training that they have and I fully agree that if I ever heard of a shot or a situation in a school that my child went to, I’d absolutely want to be through that door, but in a sense too is that I wouldn’t want to be killed and not be there for my childso it is a hard situation to think about and this man makes a good point about not knowing or having the training that these guys have had for years

@JustinRahn-q6d 16 күн бұрын
If they don't have better judgement, training and nerves than that they shouldn't be in law enforcement. We had to deal with way more dangerous and dynamic situations overseas. We were expected to properly identify the bad guys who looked just like everybody else or not take the shot. LEO's are way too trigger happy. So much for all that training. Maybe the training and culture needs an overhaul. If a bunch of 20 somethings with minimal military training could handle it in a deadlier environment than most LEO's ever see the LEO's need to be able to handle it or turn in your badge.

@@JustinRahn-q6d I agree 100%, Justin. But agencies have had to hire less desirable candidates because of Affirmative Action, and that has only gotten worse as more and more agencies in democrat run cities are being forced to lower the standards again as DEI is forced down their throats. Add to that the number of people who have been soured to the job because of the lawfare against cops and the demoralization by a society that wants to second guess everything they do and pool of qualified candidates becomes even smaller.

My thoughts as well when hearing this. Given, its different when hearing vs being present. There are those of us who will have the presence of mind in such a situation to see what can be done, and an unfortunate number of us who don't. And while there are circumstances where I would be in the first category, unfortunately there are likely far more i'd fall into the second. Which is why the training part is so important. Its far more likely someone can be in the first category when they have trained for similar situations. And its this understanding that I find depressingly lacking in the comments section. (the last sentence is not directed at you, just a general observation.)

As I was watching, I kept thinking about Christian Craighead and his response to the terrorist attack in Nairobi. Obviously, he is extremely qualified to respond the way he did, and I'm sure there are Americans that would respond similarly to attacks here in the US. One of the biggest differences, I believe, are the capabilities of law enforcement here vs. Nairobi. But we have seen Police Departments that have shown us how inept and unprepared they are, especially when discussing Uvalde. I can see how someone could make the decision to act, but I can also see how, in most situations, it would be prudent to stand down and allow law enforcement to contain the situation. Saying that, it would be difficult for me to stand by and watch, especially if my children were involved.

The legal and social aspects all have a profound impact on how you do your job. We noticed the social cues of civilians was drastically different based upon how we even dressed. Life is not the same as combat and as long as there is rule of law, running around with weapons to being in full kit will cause you more problems than the one you are trying to solve.

The issue with proportionally responding to a proximal threat, such as the assailant between you and yor spouse, is there are two components to any threat assessment. 1. How likely is the threat event to occur. This could be a single punch or puncture. 2. If the event does occur, how grave are the potential consequences. You can not reanimate someone post mortem, so if there is a chance, then the call to action is made proportionally to a dynamic assessment of the consequential loss.

If you're on the scene, then you have to act. If officers are on the scene, then let them work. If they need assistance, I am sure they will call for it. I don't think everyone is trained to act in that stress. I learned under stress everything changes if you don't have training stays out of the way. Shooting at the range is not training. Take tactical training to know how to move, breathe, and learn situational awareness. When your heart beats faster, your movements change. When moving from target to target at speed, time starts moving differently. Make sure lots of repetitions get rid of any bad habits come out under pressure. So practice practice practice more training the better.

In my opinion, being out side of the situation and then getting involved could cause a distraction of resources and confusion that could do as much harm as you could do good getting involved. Best train up family members for such situations and be available outside the area.

I read about this but I did not read about a "good samaritan" getting arrested or whatever this guy is and I don't think he is a very capable person by the looks of him. Unfortunately, in a real active shooter situation there is a very good chance the good samaritan will not survive the encounter once the police are on scene and if the GS does unalive the perp most likely will not survive the legal issues such as Penny faced even if that person in not convicted. The city I live in is more dangerous than ever due to woke DA's, judges and grand jury's being way too soft on criminals. I like your man, wife and perp drill. I drill this scenario with my girlfriend and she will circle around to me while opening the distance between her and the perp. Or I circle the perp around to ensure he is not between the two of us. What really bothers me, and I wish people such as Mike would openly discuss is..............What if Sarah Adams is right and there are hundreds if not thousands of terrorist waiting to initiate an October 7 style attack on US soil? How will our local cops, DA's and Federal legal authorities handle the average guy who is prepared and reacts to large groups of armed terrorist roaming the streets murdering people at will? How will the Sheepdogs that step up be treated? Not as hero's I suspect, not at all.

To my knowledge, Mike does openly discuss that. As well as Shawn Ryan and guests that he brings on his podcast. Mike has videos about going to the border and why he feels the border situation is a massive security risk, both in the sense of individual crimes, organized crime such as gangs, and terrorist attacks.

I love that you and your girlfriend drill this so you can work together. Its the type of thing that would be common sense, however, when stress rises, target / problem fixation tends to take over in the mind that hasn't trained for it.

@@nate2838 100% on point! Thanks! Train, train, train! I have a number of drills that I train with her and my tribe for dangerous encounters. And twice in the last year our training has been proven on the streets and I must say she performed very well. I was able to deescalate but both times the perps had no idea what they were about to get into. We get pro training at Sheepdog Response take it home and build on it. :) :) :)

@@nate2838 Oh yea.......I have seen all the videos from both guys........but, I am specifically talking about how our government will treat the people who step up to the fight in the streets when and if an Oct 7 attack occurs....If a person neutralizes a car load of terrorist at a red light that are walking up and down the street murdering people, will the local cops arrest him, seize his weapons, put him on trial and possible prison? Make a mockery of him for the world to see? Will the Federal government do the same? Mike just experienced a real slap in the face with law enforcement and his local legal system and I am sure he no longer thinks he is safe from their skullduggery! Penny case in NYC is a perfect example! Ridiculous!

The issue is the majority of the country has no law enforcement or military training or experience. They watch some videos about dealing with things like this, but have no idea how to do it in reality. Biggest point you made- separate emotion. That’s very hard to do if you have never done it in reality before. You have to think rationally.

One of my worst fears as a cop was to arrive on a scene where an active gunfight is occurring and not knowing the context. Are all shooters involved criminals? Is there one criminal and someone trying to defend themselves? So many variables. Nightmare because their isn't time for collecting information.

We had an incident locally where a teen shot him self in the gut. It was dispatched as an “active shooter”. Same “shut down/containment” protocol.. All store gates shut immediately a police dispatched in mass. The kid shot him self in the gut “showing off” to his friends. He shit him self then immediately walked out of the mall… Miamisburg Ohio mall… The officers that were “investigating” 😂 they had the front of Buckle roped off and clearly had no clue.. literally letting us stand there and watch………

I stepped into a situation where a guy was beating up a woman, I stepped in and handled it. I almost went to prison for tuning him up. The woman (in fear of her life sue to threats from him) changed her story, never testified against him. And I had to pay several thousands of dollars for his jaw surgery. He is a drug dealer who lives with mommy and nothing happened to him. The cops told me, unfortunately, most these women put themselves in these situations. They usually go back to the abuser. So it's best to just mind your own business and walk away next time.

I don't know if embarrassing or incompetence can describe them standing in the hallway outside of the door to the classroom for 45 minutes or whatever it was while you could heard shoots going off in the classroom. To me it seems this was allowed to happen because how could anyone stand around and allow a monster to murder children? Something seems way off about all of it but I also think a lot of these mass shootings are government ops.

Think we have to look at the root of the problem and not just the symptoms. The power of the law comes from the authority the government has, that is bestowed by the people. The government has failed at that, and slowly people are realizing that they have to carry justice by their own hands, which is a recipe for disaster, because one individual alone cannot decide for themselves what is right.

You make a great point of a parent making entry. What I see is a huge problem, a small number of say a seal/ delta/ ranger team, can make entry in a dwelling within minutes. Police… the amount of people who show up, is absurd, and takes so long to make entry, that time matters as a parent. Parents have a sense of urgency and protection to get there child to safety!

I've been in law enforcement for 15+ years. I teach Active Assailant classes as well. We don't call it "active shooter" because you don't need a gun to cause mass casualties. This is how we describe an active assailant, which is why I wouldn't call this particular shooting an "active shooter." "One or more persons who are randomly or systematically involved in the act of using deadly force on others, and it appears, based on available intelligence that the suspects will not stop their aggressive, hostile actions without immediate and direct law enforcement action." God bless

I feel that I would not fall into the 80% because I'm pretty good about knowing when to use daily force and when not to. But I would have definitely Reacted physically. I have many times inserted myself into situations that called for protecting someone saving someone or myself.. I don't even realize that I did it until after it's all over and I can't believe I do it every time but it's instinctive I don't stand there or freeze up I immediately act without hesitation. Last time I did that was when a guy pulled off the side of the road real fast and his car was on fire engulfed in the front end and I immediately dropped my coffee just released it it hit the ground and I had my fire extinguisher in my hand before he stopped rolling and could get out and I put the fire out. I've tackled people that were stealing I stopped a robbery one time in Scottsdale by grabbing the guy's hand and taking control of the knife and then took him to the ground and held him there until police got there.. but I have experience with aikido kenpo antico and I'm a marine veteran so I wouldn't suggest anyone do anything like that I shouldn't have done it but I don't think I just react when things like that happen easily after it's over I think to myself WTF did I do that for? I try to keep that philosophy of don't get involved you won't be involved... But for some reason my reptilian brain I guess as Mike says takes over and causes me to insert myself into dangerous and emergency situations when no one else does anything that's what makes me mad people just stand by and pull their phones out and video record it while someone suffering or something's happening that they could easily prevent. You got two people that are having issues or threatening issues that are escalating and could get out of control but everyone just stands there and watch and there's only two people and then there are multiple people there could be up to 50 to 100 people or at least five people that could overtake the situation and stop it all that help standing around watching with their cell phones doing nothing.. that's why people get burned on subways and everybody just watches including law enforcement it's disgusting

Another thought, if you walk into a situation as a "good guy with a gun", how do you know who is the aggressor who started the fight? Best to let Police sort it out. In blue states the "good guy" will likely be charged by the anti-gun DAs. I sat in a WA state self-defense trial as a juror for an innocent woman (110 lb.) who defended (unarmed) herself against her former 350 lb. boyfriend who just wanted to ruin her life. We acquitted her thankfully, because she had a competent and unbiased public defender who stood on the law. Use logic, remember your duty to your family. Remember, no good dead goes unpunished in a blue state - not worth having your life ruined and bankrupted. I would have a different opinion if I lived in TX, AR, SC, AL, etc.
