To be CLEAR... there are "shoot through" umbrellas that are designed to, you know... shoot through. That umbrella is NOT a shoot through. Also... you get different looks depending on the type of umbrella. Otherwise... great video. Love both Tyler's work and yours.

@@MikeGrayFilm For sure, man. That metering with the umbrella faced the wrong direction cracked me up. I started on the shoot through using speedlights when I started 13 years ago or so. That said, whatever gives you the results you're looking for, is the way to go, as I'm sure you both know.
I think i get what he is referring to, i have seen this as well with a normal umbrella. But the intent is to make the light softer and larger when it hits a wall (preferably white) behind the photographer

1. "Shoot through umbrellas are a thing" - he hasn't got one and doesn't appear to know what one is! Maybe a brain-fart moment? 2. The "wraparound" effect is due to the size of the light modifier and power of the light. 3. "It's not about the shutter speed, it's about the flash duration" - it's literally about both.

Well, shutter speed has no bearing on flash when using flash in normal sync mode so that's probably what he means.

Just catching up to these videos. I think he should have explained that the ratio of ambient to strobe light matters. Aperture/speed/iso impacts the former and strobe power impacts the latter. If you want to show what the background looks like then you need to go heavier on the ambient side. If you want to overpower ambient and just have the strobe light in photo then you need to go heavy on the strobe power. Sync speed is a limiting factor on the ambient side. Strobe power is the limiting factor on the strobe side. Hope that makes sense. Greetings from Florida. Love these videos.

I'm a bit confused about the parabolic umbrella, because as far as I know the ability for light to wrap a round a subject is simply the result of the size of the modifier, and not it being parabolic. Also if truly parabolic, it should create a more narrow light by definition. Also there are shoot through umbrellas that essentially function as a softbox, but allow for more ambient light as more light bounces around.

People actually do that, though lol. It's supposed to be to bounce the light coming from the umbrella into a wall to soften it up even further. Then the light has to travel all the way back to your subject. I would personally never do it. If I'm bouncing my light in to a wall it's going to be my bare light.
