Tourists think the guards are there just for them! I’ve often had to explain they would be there if there were no tourists. They are there for us,(UK), not them.

It is a public footpath and I believe through the gates is a walkway to Buckingham Palace

It is not a public footpath. It is MoD property and they can turf you out and shut the gates any time they feel like it.
