I think Arteta actually had the best “apprenticeship” ever, he spent the last few years of his playing career at Arsenal learning from Wenger, before moving to City and learning from Guardiola for 3 years. You can’t get much better training than that!

I don't think it's just about simply giving a manager time. I also think Arteta, as a person, displays both conviction, calmness, and is very articulate about his ideas and where he wanted to take the club. That helps as well. And the board probably also realized the squad wasn't a "only 1-2 signings away from competing". They needed a rebuild.... they wanted a rebuild... and so they went through with a rebuild (with Arteta).

Something that was not mentioned in the video is, that Arteta's first year had a clear focus on Defence. They often Parked the bus against big teams, but that was only to train this for the future. When defence was already "built", he started to focus on midfield and attack movements (positional play + channel movements). And lastly, Control + Pressing. Now they are able to dictate the tempo against most teams, press only when needed. Defence is the best in the league, build up play is fantastic.

You missed one name who helps this strategy work and that is Thomas Partey! Without him Arsenal lost last 4 games of last season this season when he plays it simple they win or worse draw an away game. The guy is so good, that game against Manchester City you talked about is when I become a believer boy was he good in that game. I first thought he was overrated then he got fit and got a run games under him, then I realised why Arteta wanted him so much, he is Rodri and Fernandinho put together can defend and can also make that incisive pass going forward something even the great Kante, Makalele or even Essien(okay that is not true as he could do it all too but you get the picture how good Partey is) One of Arsenal’s greatest challenge is keeping him fit especially after the World Cup.

Arteta was also patient. He tried implementing his tactics early on when he joined and quickly realized his team wasn’t ready to execute it due in partly to the leaky defense. So he set them up defensively in a back 3 and saw them through a lot of games until he had players who could execute what he wanted. Other managers try to implement their style right away and when that doesn’t work, the players lose faith in them and they get sacked.

Sports in the United States follow the “process” model and I hope that Mikel’s success in Arsenal promotes football to adopt this model. The process model is simple, have a manager, a vision, and incremental objectives that need to be achieved over a certain period of time in order to build a squad strong enough to compete at an extremely high level for AT LEAST 5 years once the process has been completed. Arsenal’s ownership being American helped immensely with how they handled Arteta as the manager, the goal was not to succeed immediately but over time. More teams need to follow this model, rather than the run and gun “if it works it works if it doesn’t we sack” model that banks on the success the manager rather than success of the squad. For example, when Arteta leaves he’ll leave Arsenal in better shape then when he came due to the aspect of “strong foundation building” that comes along with going through a process, but with the current “sack at first sign of danger” culture then a new manager can actually leave the squad in a worser state (for example Benitez at Everton) because it focuses on maintaining and improving the current structure no matter how flawed it may be, rather than actually bulldozing the entire thing, starting from scratch and building it up to be more stable.

I think with Mikel, you could see very early what the style of play in an ideal Mikel Arteta team would look like, and though some of the wins were scrappy, the big scalps we got on the way to the FA Cup played a big part in creating that buy-in from the club. There was shaky spell where I thought the club might not stick with him but since boxing day 2020 when we beat Chelsea I think we've continuously improved, and though there have been some disappointing cup exits and a few spells in the league where we haven't played well, overall we've grown. We're better in all phases of play - in possession, out of possession, attacking set pieces, defensive set pieces, and transition moments as well and we are deservedly top. Long may that continue.

Jamie O’Hara claimed Tottenham had now eclipsed Arsenal five months ago. Mikel transformation of Xhaka saved his Arsenal playing career and as for the club, it’s is in a much better position with a talented and more youthful squad. The project was not obvious to the fans as he dismantled an ageing squad and had a transfer window of non activity. The culture and mood of the fans has now changed and there is real belief that Mikel is creating something special at Arsenal. The gamble he took on Saliba keeping him out on loan, needed balls and vision.

Yeah, but how will AFTV get views now? Robbie built an empire by letting idiots yell "HE'S THE GREATEST!" or "SACK HIM!" after every result. In fact, what I like about the Arteta story is that it's the perfect antithesis of what social media has done to football and fandom. Team wins that week: "WE R DA BEST!!!1!!". Team loses that week: "SACK THE MANAGER, FIRE ALL THE PLAYERS, GET NEW OWNERS, BURN THE STADIUM DOWN!" We need to inculcate long-term thinking once again. Fans (and even players, sadly) are too short-sighted to even think in terms of a full season anymore. Expecting them to have the patience to wait the multiple seasons it takes for a manager to implement a system, iron out the kinks, teach it to the players, refine it, get the right players that suit it, refine it some more, and execute it successfully... it's impossible. Maybe that's why it worked at Arsenal. The players were already sick of the Arsenal fandom's wild vacillations and the core of the squad are young players who aren't close-minded egomaniacs looking to maximize on their prime or the trophy-hunt in the last few years of their career. They know they have time to grow, so they're willing to wait for the system to work out for them.

Wenger might have noticed Arteta's tactical nous which was why he brought Arteta in. When Arteta came to Arsenal, his prime had just pass him. But Arsene wanted Arteta to love the club as a player in hopes that one day, Mikel would return and continue to build on the foundations he had lay at the Emirates. And returned he did. This reminds me of the message Howard Stark left for Tony. "I built this for you, and some day you'll realize that it represents a whole lot more than just people's inventions. It represents my life's work. This is the key to the future. I'm limited by the technology of my time, but one day you'll figure this out. And when you do, you will change the world." If Arteta would stay for at least half of how long Wenger did, I hope we can win at least one UCL title. COYG!!

hindsight 20 20, there were a lot of artetaout last season when we magnificently failed to get top 4 (and finish the season above spurs). it was clear from last season that we were on track. our goal was to get back to europe, and champions league is more like a bonus. this season, we have been more consistent and the dissapointment from last season is our fuel. we are more matured and cohesive and really can grind out result when needed. all gooners will say that we have a slim chance to win epl this season, but they journey will be amazing. josh just need to open the warchest this jan to add more depth to our squad so we can compete with city.

Blows my mind how even in such a thorough video, people throw around the statement that Arteta had “two 8th place finishes in his first two seasons “. The man took over in December of that first season, picking upa team sitting in the bottom half.

Arteta was able to convince Kroenke to trust the process, even renewing his contract when most people wanted him sacked .. I believed in him from day 1, and thank God we stuck with him ❤❤❤

I might have my problem with the Kroenkes, but I'll always be grateful that they've given Arteta the time that was clearly needed to improve the squad. Some fans were viscerally Arteta Out when things were going poorly, but they stuck with him and now were top of the league.

Great video only gripe I have is saying arsenal fell away last season, they did but it was due to way more injuries than the team was ready for. Which was rectified in the summer to a large extend, still additions as for any team but the core is there

While we praise Arteta as the key for building such a great team, let’s not forget Arsenal also have a great management team lead by Edu and Kroenke. I used to hate Kroenke family, but I have to eat my words now. Arsenal really do have a great team now, both on the pitch and off the pitch.

A lot of credit has to go to the Sporting director and the owners for always backing the manager and sticking with his principles, even when it seemed too difficult to do so, you don’t get a lot of that in football nowadays. Credit to them for being resolute in seeing a project through.

I think an underrated aspect of Arsenal's improvement under Arteta has to do with the age profile of the squad -- since moving on Band-Aid solutions like Sokratis and David Luiz, and parting with Özil, Aubameyang, Mustafi, Mkhytarian, and other past-prime players, Arteta has something resembling a lab experiment: young players whose habits and views are at their most malleable. Many are rising talents (Sambi Lokonga, Tomiyasu, Fabio Vieira) coming to Arsenal from smaller clubs; some are players who have felt stifled in their previous homes (Ødegaard, Partey, Jesus/Zinchenko); all are fully bought-in to the famous non-negotiables and the team-first ethos. Arteta is a demanding boss, but apparently a charismatic one. This team plays full of belief.

You forgot maybe the key for having a good balance in attack and defence or easier to understand, transition playing. Arteta is very good in transition play's and one player is top at this, Thomas Partey is such a great and quality player in defence and attack, also have a very good positioning on the pitch, which is very important for the team and Arteta. Good video, great stuff! 👏👍

Arsenal were extremely unfortunate in the 2021-22 season not to get 4th. Here's why: 1. Started the season with injuries & covid 2. Lost KEY players at vital times. Tierney replaced by Tavares. Partey by Lokonga and Tomiyasu. Note two of those injured in International friendlies 3. Tottenham got 6 points off Man City which you would have got something like14/1 at least for them to do. Yet Arsenal only fell 2 points behind Spurs. It wasn't a bottle job at all. If City beat Spurs at home, for which they were long odds on, Arsenal get 4th

Differing contrasts on both managers in yesterday's clash between Arsenal and Chelsea. Graham Potter is a good manager but I'm starting to wonder will the owners of Chelsea give him the elbow room to grow just like the Arsenal board gives Arteta? Potter had a good thing going at Brighton but when a club like Chelsea comes knocking, you're not going to turn that down. Maybe it's a move too soon? Who knows? Arsenal's win yesterday was by far the most impressive, despite wins over Spurs and Liverpool.

Rival fns and pundits alike haven't been paying attention to Arsenal's improvement because it wasn't results based. Now they see a team playing excellently and struggle to accept it as authentic because it looks like it's come from nowhere when in reality, the progress has been on plain sight just unacknowledged.

Unai Emery has proved that he's a very good manager. He was stuck with a daunting task of being "the guy who replaced Wenger"; wrong squad, wrong time. By the end, however, everything had just gone stale and it did seem like the team was just trudging joylessly downward to being London's Everton. His sacking might not have been fair, but that doesn't mean it wasn't right. The current team plays with such joy and belief ... sure, winning is the biggest reason why, but in this case it's a virtuous circle. Even when missing the UCL last season, as big a disappointment as that was, it felt like things were finally getting better. Gone are the days of "There's something going on with Ozil, but we don't know what. There's something going on with Xhaka, but we don't know what. There's something going on with Mustafi and Sokratis ... and everybody knows what (they just aren't good enough)."
