@@EetFuk8 At specifically what? There’s too many aspects of drumming to determine. He’s definitely not faster than Mangini I can tell your that for fact. But there’s no point in comparing them anyways bc they’re both different beasts.
@EetFuk8
@EetFuk8 2 жыл бұрын
@@bradycowles5520 So, if being faster means being better to you, then all the faster drummers than Mangini are better than him. And being technically better does not mean being better either. Jordan Rudess has more techinique and pace than Kevin Moore, but it's undoubtedly certain that Kevin is way better. You have to be creative, have feeling, and show your passion through your instrument, which Mangini lacks thereof. That being said, I'm not a Portnoy fanboy, but when you compare the two, it's Portnoy who's definitely better. I know that Portnoy will never be back in Dt, but I want Dt to replace Mangini with a better drummer. I don't care how much technique or speed he has, he is just terrible on the drums. I don't feel anything when I listen to him, and his hits are so weak and dull. Just stop being a Mangini fanboy and accept his flaws.

People say Mangini has no “feel” compared to Portnoy, but aside from the possibility that they just can’t articulate what makes them different, I think Mangini’s feel is very precise, deliberate, and consistent. Mangini can play Jazz , Rock , Funk , Latin, Afro Cuban and more . Mangini also effortlessly plays in all kinds of crazy Time signatures. 5/8 , 7/8, 9/8...17/16 , and on and on. @@ThePoorBoy I wouldnt be so sure… I always thought Mangini never put his full technical potential with Dream Theater, to be honest I think he used a small portion of what I’ve seen him doin during his Drums Lessons and clinics, for some reason or the other. My opinion is that his skills are far more superior than what Dream Theater would and could require, so he stuck on a ‘Portnoy level’. That’s why I think Portnoy will have no problems playing some Mangini era tunes.

@@Tryggvasson you have several examples throughout the video, hearing one thing and seeing him hit other (e.g. the ride fill at 0:48, 0:50, 0:52, when the shot flips to the left side camera you ear the ride while he’s hitting the crash; For instance, who’s hitting the crash you ear at the end of the bar at 7:46?) You can find several other examples, audio does not match several parts of the shot. STILL, the point I was trying to make is the great accuracy he shows here, memorizing all fills as recorded, in a very very consistent way, to the point of shooting a video like this👌🏼 believe me, this is actually harder to do than just making a simple/raw live take. 😉 cheers. Small note: I didn’t say this was the album drum track. I don’t know that.

@@Tryggvasson One last thought: it’s a very challenging thing for us drummers, for instance, during a band video clip shooting, to play every drum component as recorded in the album/audio. It’s very difficult. I recently saw a very good example of this, also at a very “professional” level, the latest Trivium single: the drummer is shown, a bunch of times, hitting one thing while a different fill/drum component is being heard. This usually tends to happen when the video editor has no feeling for the drum parts and their respective sounds. While for most of the audience, this goes totally unnoticed, drummers easily spot these things 😊 (I’m not saying this happened here, but my guess in this video: Mr.Mangini maybe shot 2 or 3 takes, and the video mixes some of each parts. That’s why SOME drum parts are not a perfect match of what is heard) that’s just my guess. Doesn’t mean this is not totally awesome. IT IS! perfect performance! 👏🏼👌🏼

@@plsantana86 you're right, i caught the crash-ride thing myself, in the beginning, just as i was opening up your comment - keen observation, by the way, i hadn't caught it the first time. that doesn't mean the audio isn't that of the actual session, though. it's probably a video editing thing, on top of the performance - who knows, even the audio might be a comp of several takes, although, for the most part, without actually scanning for incongruencies, the correspondence seems to me to be spot on. you can tell by the accents, by the way his hand moves in relation to the hits, the velocities, and even the overall sound, which is very different from the single - i actually like it more, less compressed - you've got almost no rooms, which is explicable, given the size of the room, the overheads are used mostly as cymbal and presence mics - again, explicable - and the shells are mostly direct mics. in the end, i guess we're saying the same thing - it is the audio from this particular performance, but maybe with some video/audio edit inconsistencies. man, these guy have it rough - this level of scrutiny on everything they do :ppppp. on the other hand i guess they command that kind of admiration and interest in every single detail, because they make every single detail count, and it all seems to be put together so flawlessly.

First off I'm a Bass Player and this comment is coming from a Bass players perspective. I played with Tom Hunting in Exodus back in 79/80. Tom is one hell of a drummer and like Portnoy he plays with the guitarist. As a Bass player that drives me crazy. Mangini reminded me of my old drummer Scott McKenzie the first time I heard him with Dream Theater and it felt like home because both of them play with the Bass Player. John and Mike are locked it with each other and I love that. Scott and I used to jam together, write songs together, and make mistakes together for hours. Every Rhythm section in a band should be like that.
