I just unpacked my lathe after a 12 year break and jumped right back into bowl turning. I had forgotten how bad of a catch you can get with a scraper. I was reminded of it rather dramatically as soon as I tried lol🤯

Great video, Mike! I received left and right Hurricane bowel scrapers for Christmas and since it's getting warm enough in my unheated Ohio pole barn shop, I referred to your video for the first grinding on them.

Big Help, I got a good catch this morning on a platter/bowl. Seems I took the round nose scraper to far out toward the rim and I'm guessing I dropped the handle as well. Thx for the advice.

I never use a gouge and always end with a smooth finish...sharp scrapers and move slowly. Turners make turning more difficult than it really is. Agreed...very light pressure.

As per Marc below, Just this week I had a bowl 'Pop'. I was sooo annoyed. The bowl was done and just the last finishing touch...Hopefully people will learn before the event thanks to you. One of the first things an Ol boy at my local club said was sand the edges of your tool. Am now anticipating your video on negative rake scrapers.

Thanks for the tips, Mike. I'm a new turner and have only used carbides up to now. But, I have the 7-piece Benjamin's Best plus the BB two-piece half-round scraper set that I'm ready to use.

Excellent tips on scraping. In Stuart Batty's class that I attended he demonstrated how to use the burr that you describe to create a surface that required almost no sanding. But he also says that that burr typically lasts less than 1 minute.

Thank you so much for your help with negative rack scraping. I was quite impressed with your use with a skew, that to me seemed to be better than any of the scraper that you used. I have to say at this conjuncture that I'm more than a beginner in so far as I have hardly used my lathe of tools due to a long term illness, but I'm getting better now. So, the majority of my knowledge has been gratefully received from the likes of your good self and other 'class' woodturners, thank you again Mike, 5 Stars. John A J Oakes.

Why is the burr raised by the diamond card stronger and finer than that achieved on the grinder?
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
The one off the grinder is courser and therefor tends to break off. The brr raised by a carbide rod or hone is smaller and smoother and therefor does not break as easily.

I found that if I put a two or three foot long handle on a scraper, it doesn't catch as easily. If I turn it into a negative rake and use it as an abrader, it just plain works. I have to get desperate to use a scraper though.

I love my negative rake scrapers. Beautiful finish on the top of an end grain box.
@lyndalanthony635

Two things: First get rid of the factory handle and put a 2 to 3 foot long handle on for better leverage, less catches. (The factory length handle works alike a teeter totter.) Second, make them negative rake. negative rake scrapers don't like to cut so the chances of catches are dramatically reduced.

Just to reinforce your comment about harmonics if you scrape near the rim. I tried to use a conventional scraper to remove a defect near the top of a nice 10-inch maple bowl. I ignored the howling sound, the bowl shattered, and a sharp chunk gouged a two-inch hole in the wall of my shop. I wasn't in the line of fire and I was wearing a full face shield. But that was still pretty unnerving.

I assume the Harbor Freight scrapers lose their burr quicker the the higher quality scrapers. Have you noticed a big difference? Someone with a limited budget, like myself, might be OK with sharpening more often to save $. Are the name brand scrapers worth the extra $, in you view? Looking forward to more videos on this subject. Thanks for posting. :o)
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 7 жыл бұрын
+Gil Grace Not sure if there is an easy answer. I think it goes back to your budget, how often and what you turn, and of course what you value. I seem to do fine with M2 scrapers. I may have to decide which scrapers gets the most use and try a high end replacement to see what I may be missing. Or not.🙄

If you use a scraper to make a shear cut like a gouge there will be much less chatter on thin turnings. Enjoy your videos.....always lern something....especially the fundamentals.

You are moving across the face much too fast....a better surface moving much slower. How fast are you spinning... 850? 900? Huh???...dust?... yes dust is like sanding to get a smooth finish...think about that one again.
