As someone who was positively obsessed with the gg books in the late 2000s, I would like to add one important thing from the books that the show kinda tried to recreate but kinda failed: The Serena-Nate-Blair triangle was INTENSE in the books. It was the overarching storyline and their dynamic was so interesting and they all loved each other endlessly but also hated each other? It was THE love triangle back then. And it ended with Blair and Serena choosing their friendship over being with Nate and that was SO GOOD because it was the first time I read about women valuing their friendship that much.

I have so many random facts from Gossip Girl for no reason. I love these deep dives! The reason why Guitar Hero was included at Blair's birthday. Blake Lively was actually obsessed with it and would go to competitions covered in fake tattoos. In the season one blooper there's a part where she's actually pausing the game, so she was actually playing it in the show.

I always thought that the Dan and Blair interactions during the photoshoot episode were a pretty good hint that the writers were building up a Blair-Dan-Serena triangle as the core romantic storyline of the show. But then the limo scene happened and it kinda wrote television history so the whole thing got sidetracked. I'm glad it happened that way. I think the main love story of GG has always been Blair and Serena's friendship. I would not have enjoyed six whole seasons of them fighting over Dan Humphrey.
@sophie427 Жыл бұрын
For real. Dan does not deserve that much star power fighting over him. Blair would never stoop so low.
@cranberryrosebud Жыл бұрын
I agree that Dan isn't worthy of the main hunk position, but I honestly think a Dair endgame could've been really satisfying, if they'd let Dan and Blair have more scenes together, made Dan more interesting and didn't overshadow the start of their attraction to each other with a royal marriage. Honestly, I love Chuck and Blair, but the scene where Dan has Blair dress up as a princess and walks her down the steps is one of my favourites in the whole show, and they would've been such a good 'opposites attract' ship imo if they'd been given a better chance (and if Dan had been more interesting, like I said before).
@bumblebee7384 Жыл бұрын
Its not the limo scene. It’s the writer’s strike happening back then. The showrunners basically cut half of the plotlines in GG.

Barely 30 minutes in and I just need to say that one of the many core factors that makes OG GG work is the fact that their luxury and wealth MAKES SENSE. Like Nate comes from "prehistoric" money, Blair being the daughter of a prominent fashion designer, Bart Bass being a NYC hotel/business mogul and Lily Van der Woodsen just being iconic and marrying rich and climbing the social ladder while their kids are strapped in for the ride. In the reboot I sincerely could not understand how they were all so loaded and what anyone did or came from, except Julian and yet still. As a teenage influencer, I just didn't feel like she'd be in a school, private or not. But what OG GG had going for it were all the schemes and plot points that took place at these high society events and viewers wanted to see what chaos and drama would go down.
@moonlight-fv6gu Жыл бұрын
honestly the og gossip girl had real life inspiration, since Serena was based off German heiress Hadley Nagel. I do feel like if Julian or any of the characters had a real life person, or maybe real life inspiration; the author of the gossip girl books grew up with the kids of upper east ny. The newer gossip girl wasn’t bringing much to the table since we’ve already SEEN it all: think about it, the reboot showed the same things that social media was showing us (kids of the rich flaunting their wealth). They weren’t bringing anything fresh, like how the og was seen as an escapism show (around the time it came out there was a financial recession) so people tuned in to see the rich kids of high society wearing Chanel blazers to prep school and crying about boyfriends. I will give the reboot props for trying to be “in touch” with current Gen Z Trends. (Juliet’s met gala dress and also the black cut out dress that Luna wore are both dresses that Kendall Jenner wore) also when I found out that the actor who played Aki went on tour with Travis Scott and is best friends with Frank Ocean it made more sense why they casted him. sorry for this long mini essay
@moonlight-fv6gu Жыл бұрын
sorry for double replying but if I could re-write the reboot I would make it this. MAJOR SPOILERS !!! 1. Obie not being as “involved” with the community service as he was in the show. Honestly him bringing the donuts to the protest? sufficed enough, Obie will always have a privilege and upbringing that yes he understands that his parents demolishing lower income areas to build penthouses similar to the one he grew up in is bad, but he will never truly *understand* . I do feel like his relationship with Zoya should have lasted longer be cause he would be intrigued since Zoya is so community involved and passionate about “good causes” so he probably would have wanted to be with someone who gives him a fresher perspective on things he’s used to (his parents gentrification in lower income areas) . 2. Zoya being Gossip Girl would have been so much better because Zoya is aspiring writer, and also she has front row shows to all the drama that the upper East siders do. Also I feel like she would want to expose Julien and all the crappy things that people who have money and influence get away with. {For example buying your children into a college *olivia jade* or paying local politicians to sign approval on demolition that will create gentrification in neighborhoods.} (Zoya is definitely the only character who I would see as someone who could be gossip girl and see it as a “good cause” since she hates all the bad things rich people do) 3. Julien not being the main leader because that should have gone to Monet or Luna (Julien is trying out influencing and is struggling to rise to the top and make it in the vapid world of influencing, because people are calling her a nepo baby since her dad is a famous musician and she has more opportunities. Julien has multiple posts about being “an activist” and “helping out her community” when in reality she just doesn’t care (this would be one of the reasons Zoya is gossip girl) 4. None of the throuple drama/mess but Audrey and Aki having trouble staying in their relationship because of outside pressure to “look perfect with no flaws” from their peers and also because Audrey is spending more time with Max than Aki and he feels jealous so he tells all of this to Zoya since I always thought a Zoya and Aki friendship would be cool and she exposes it in Gossip Girl. 5. The sister tension but it’s about Zoya getting mad that Julien is pretending to be a “social activist” when in reality Julien just wants to be relevant, even though Zoya is all about “eat the rich” she is secretly jealous of the luxury and freedom Julien is able to afford all because she has money. Julien is mad at Zoya because Zoya is dating Obie, and Julien used to hook up with Obie and she claimed she “didn’t catch feelings for him” but in reality she did. **obviously all this happening with all the petty drama that happens when you have nothing but an endless supply of time, money, and teenage hormones. xoxo

Obie and Aki’s wealth made sense in the reboot. Roger Menzies, Aki’s dad is a media tycoon similar to Rupert Murdoch. The Bergmann family are real estate moguls.

I really like the relationship between Blair and Eric. Since she’s an only child he’s the closest to a little sibling she has and you can really tell she never wants to hurt him. Dan said "I love you, Serena... until I'm reminded you are rich and had a messy past, and then I'm gonna judge you and make you feel even worse and ashamed instead of just stop seeing you, but like... I love you the way you are, Serena". The way Serena was horrified to tell Dan what she did a year ago was wild. It's like he truly had been terrorizing her with his judgement. And then when she told him, he was like "it's fine, but i hate that you lied to me".
