Hey Mike. I'm a HVAC mechanic from SoCal. My first bag was a Tech XL when I stopped using the CLC open bags. It's 4 years old and still going strong. I have since added a Tech MCT , TECH MC, TP4, and an MB2 bag. They all have their distinctive jobs for which I use them for in my trade. Thank you for a great video. Have a safe and great Christmas.

As a secondary bag, take a look at the MB2. I recently got it and I actually moved a few tools out of my main pac into it to live. Things like my meter, a pair of Marvels, a couple of terminal drivers, sharpie and some tape. It hooks onto the side of the Tech pac, as a bit of an extension if you will. So it goes wherever the pac goes, however it's always ready to go when I just need to go meter some stuff, and maybe identify a few cables. Even has room for some specialty leads (like straight banana's, aligator clips etc), as well as a few cheeky bluepoints (blue point connectors) and wagos.

Great video and nice explanation for tools selected. I am constantly adjusting my tool Carry to maximize efficiency. However, as you reach 50 years old, you start looking at bag weight. Now I’d rather walk back to the truck or box once every three months, then carry it around 8 hours every day.

Had the same issue with the handle digging in my side, Turn your shoulder strap around so it clips on the other side of the Handle and it will help break it In so the direction of the Handle is away from you when using the shoulder strap.

Zipper eezdoes wonders for zippers used it on our dry suits in the coast guard. You can find it at marine type stores like west marine. Also isn't that a lot of heft, currently I'm using a Klein backpack and tool belt but it becomes cumbersome to carry all those tools. I need to design a go bag without the weight but versatile to attack various tasks. Maybe a gang box home base with daily carry bag.

One thing I hate about the Wera screwdrivers is there's no hole in the end of the handle to stick another screwdriver in and turn it, for that extra leverage. That's what made me just go for the stanley fatmax ones. I must say I do like them, surprisingly strong tip for a cheap enough screwdriver. I might try pick up some halfords advanced ones when they're on sale though and give them a bash too.

You should take one thing out of your bag a day to lighten it up. Throw the stuff into your old bag and leave it in your car, in case you really need it. I think you'll find that you really don't though. Two pairs of linesmans. Skip that! Toss that non-contact voltage detector too. It's crap.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 7 жыл бұрын
I like the non-contact as a precursor to using a real meter. I never fully trust an "off" reading with them, but I do trust every hot. They're nice when you're trying to figure out what circuit to kill or where a switch goes. Then you can pull a plate and double check with your real meter.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 7 жыл бұрын
+Maxwelhse I guess. Some NCVs sensors work. They all would benefit from adjustable sensitivity. You're probably better off with a fox and hound tick tracer though.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 7 жыл бұрын
The tick tracers that I'm familiar with require direct contact to an energized circuit, which is sorta what we're trying to avoid until we get close to where we want to go. The non-contact style of those absolutely eat shit. I've tried 3-4 different ones and they're all junk (the kind where you plug a dongle into a circuit and then go down the box with a non-contact probe). My NCVs all do have a sensitivity adjustment, which I agree is handy. You just have to make sure you don't knock it out of whack.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 7 жыл бұрын
+Maxwelhse Tick tracers are pretty simple devices. I suppose in this day and age a better one could be made? But with everyone shaving in the name of higher profits I can well imagine why it isn't so.

Mike, your tool bag looks very organized, is it as heavy as it looks ? I filled my VETO PRO XL almost exactly the way you have your bag setup, because I'm an electrician also. Ever think about having a sail maker or leathersmith set you up with some back pack straps that you can just clip on to a bag like that? 40lbs on your shoulder sucks, but 40lbs on your back isn't so bad. You get some high quality straps made and you'll have them for years to come.

Mike, You mentioned the "pen tester" as something you wouldn't trust your life to. I've come to the same conclusion, even with a rather expensive Klein version ($25) they sometimes show a reading despite knowing the power is off to a specific box. My question is have you ever done a "how-to video" on how to test a wire to see if it's hot or not with a meter? (For those electrical noobs like myself). I'd be interested in such a tutorial. Or any other "electrical tips for beginners." I really enjoy your channel :)

The "pen tester" is only good for showing that there is voltage, not at showing that there isn't voltage. They also tend to be semi-reliable at best.

So are you saying you shouldn't use one to check to see if you turned off the right breaker? I thought that's what those were for?
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 7 жыл бұрын
Jared Waters The way I treat those things to to always trust a positive and never trust a negative until I confirm it with a meter. So.. If it says it's hot, I believe it. If it say's it's not, I don't. They can be handy for identifying circuits (like flipping a switch or a breaker on and off should be repeatable and the hot stick should follow suit), but you shouldn't be trusting your life to one. I've also had them work great for weeks on end and then suddenly quit working. They're disposable IMO.

You might laugh, but I just use an old steak knife. Every drywall saw I've ever used the teeth are way too aggressive so they're hard to use and they end up making shitty cuts. Anything over 1/2" with one is pure torture... Either that or I don't know what the hell I'm doing...?

+Mike's Tool Shed They're WAY easier on your hands and forearms and I feel they're easier to control too. The one I use is generally drywall saw size, but just steak knife teeth. It's also a full tang handle. The only down side is they're harder to start. I normally just pop a big hole with a unibit and then saw from there. The unibit doesn't seem to bother wires any the way a rotozip would, but your company or inspector may freak out if they see power tools going into drywall. As an amateur, that's not really a problem I have but I've heard stories from other pros. Most of the guys I've worked with are heavy commercial (factory electricians) and wouldn't go back to residential for any amount of money. haha So... anyhow... before you buy a $10+ drywall saw, hit the Goodwill for $2 of steak knives and see if one suits you better.

Josh's Industrial Maintenance I’ve never been to the outhouse. I’ve heard it’s a $30 cover but it’s a BYOB joint also. One of these days I’ll hit it up...
