Hey Mike, thank you very much for great video (and audio!). Just wanted to mention: I just bought a new SM7B and everything (including the audio quality) checks out (even the wiring on the inside) - EXCEPT the sticker going around the mic: there's actually two separate stickers going all the way around on my model. This seems to be a new design. Also, mine is made in China, not Mexico. However, I am fairly certain mine is genuine, but thought I'd mention this as it might help some others out as well.

I bought one on AliExpress and don't have those differences or issues. I had mine modded with the Trace Audio Anser mod that adds 48v of phantom power. Basically turns into a SM7DB.

He says the sm7b doesnt have the sticker running around the inset on the center of the mic but I think the newer ones have that since it has a symbol for WEEE & UKCA recycling on it. I purchased mine 2 days ago fulfilled by amazon and after looking at a bunch of product pics, the older mics dont seem to have it but the sm7db model does, I think they updated the sm7b for compliance and since everything else matched but he said it meant it was fake and I had to look into it. Otherwise the brass colored plate and wiring inside match, the brass inserts on the holding gromets, and everything else he said as far as im aware of lines up with this

I ordered mine directly from a Shure Audio partner and the only thing was the sticker is completely around the mic.

Great video, thank you! I just purchased the Shure SM7dB, and if in doubt do not buy a Shure SM7B variant new or used unless you know for certain it was purchased from an authorized Shure reseller, and if the box isn't sealed on a new purchase, return it. One thing that was surprising to me was how similar the fake SM7B's sound compared to the original, but I guess a dynamic microphone capsule isn't that hard or expensive to copy. Beware there are also a lot of fake KSM series Shure mics out there, most notably the KSM8 and KSM9.

thanks to this man i figured out i bought a fake shure sm7b, i only noticed a difference though as i bought 2 one was real and one was fake and they sounded nothing alike, this video just helped me comfirm it wasnt a real shure, i bought mine used from a known uk retail store but now bought another one, will be returning the fake one so thanks. if you read this i dont recommend buying used but if you do just follow this mans advice its very clear what is a fake but hard to tell if you dont watch this video

Appreciate the video, Mike! I purchased a SM7B and a Rodecaster Duo about a month ago from Guitar Center in Medford. Hands down the worst buying experience I have ever had. I had to return the first SM7B because it had been opened, these items were shipped to me because my local GC didn't have any in stock therefore, I wasn't able to immediately refuse the microphone. Two items out of five had to be returned, a completely wrong item and an item that had been opened. No more Guitar Center!

Watch your video after i bought the mic, and it looks like it was real but i trust myself to see that is a fake. because there was the grommets that were loose so i send it back to the seller on ebay so i got my refund, thank you Mike for your great advice.

All the things you complain about with the fake may be more or less true. There are now a lot of different variants. What I miss, however, are sound samples of the different sounds. What a pity.

nice video, its worth noting that there are many different fake sm7b designs and some are closer to the authentic than others... also there are a few different designs of genuine sm7bs around from different generations of manufacture, eg i think there are some real sm7bs with decal all the way round etc. But yeah for the most part these are the best things to look out for 👍:)

@mikesytes so, figured I'd pass this along... I just purchased a SM7B off ebay. Soon after, watched your video and got scared. I was able to register my microphone, so it's authentic. But, my cable is longer than you described, grommet is semi easy to mess with and mine included a red wire. But, it does have the brass back piece, brass spacer in the middle and is sturdy to move. Just thought you'd like some further content.

This is a fine video for what it is, but you could have at least mentioned that there may be more than one manufacturer of fakes, and the signs may differ. Unfortunately, most of us don’t have access to a’certified’ original to compare. As in everything, if it works for you, keep it. If you’re not happy, return it. In most cases, I’d buy something that looks similar, but is stated to be an off-brand, but then I’m exceedingly frugal. Also, at 70 years old, I can’t really tell the difference.

You're wrong about the decal on one side only - newer models have it on both sides. Or then again, we all could get the SM7dB and be done with it.😆

I bought one from eBay. Felt wrong, had a ce sticker on one side and the grommets were coming off the cable. The windshield was wrong shape and I could tell it was wrong. PayPal here I come.

I got a question about the trademark logo, the other list on the video have been checklisted but mine got a trademark logo in it, some of people said that the real one doesn't have the trademark logo, any thoughts? @mikesytes
