Calm & peaceful :-) As a new comer to turning its great to find someone who can calmly explain in a easy to understand way with no gimmicky sensationalist fast shots & silly music. I feel a lot happier tonight just for understanding the difference between spindle & bowl gouges. In fairness I only unboxed my lathe yesterday but caught the bug & addiction back in the early 1970,s in school with a great woodwork teacher. I always promised myself that "One Day" ....... well nows my time. Thank you for making the time to put your stuff out here. Stay safe.

Mike this was an excellent video, especially for people such as my self who are new to wood turning. I have been wood turning for only 3 months and have got fairly decent on spindles, but have decided to try bowls, and your explanation of bowl gouges virus spindle gouges was exceptional!!!! When you are new to this type of wood working, most videos go to fast for a beginner to comprehend their movements, your slow and meticulous actions and explanations is exactly what a beginner needs. Keep up the good work and thanks again.

The first versions of these videos were helpful when I was trying to learn woodturning a year or so ago. Thanks for updating them! Another thing that would be useful to me as a beginner (still), would be a video covering the different types of cuts you can do with a bowl gouge. I know there's at least the push cut (which you showed here), the pull cut, and shear scraping with the gouge. Showing how they work and when each one is appropriate would be really useful to someone starting out. Another suggestion: maybe you could talk about the proper cut *direction* for each cut, if you don't think that's too basic. Thanks again!

I was interested to watch this one but all your video's are great Mike. Just watched another video, where the turner said never use a spindle gouge for bowl work and he demonstrated why. When his finger got caught between the edge of the gouge and the wood, very nasty and highly dangerous. Yet again you answered my question, the difference between a spindle gouge and a bowl gouge, many thanks.

Mike, nice closeups and explanation of BG use. interesting that BG size confusion all comes out of Sheffield and some crazy tradition that made sense to someone sometime in the past. All BGs made in North America, Australia and even the ones made in China seem to be consistent with spindle gouge measuring convention on using the bar diameter: 3/8 is 3/8 and 1/2" is 1/2". I would still prefer a 3/8" BG made in Sheffield to a 1/2" Chinese. 😉 I think your spindle and BG comparisions would have been more helpful showing images of a SG and BG of the same bar diameter.
@AndysCornishCreations5 жыл бұрын

Please allow me to suggest that the long distance camera is placed at the exact high of the turning centre. Thus eliminating parallex and giving the viewer a better understanding of the position and angle of the tool relative to the piece.
