Thank you so much for this video! I'm a first year Biblical Hebrew Student at Brigham Young University and I've been curious about cantillation for a long time now. I attended Shabbat services earlier this year and I was awestruck by the beauty and elegance of the chanting of the Torah. I'm very grateful for your simple videos that have been extremely helpful to me in coming to a basic understanding of cantillation. I'm eager to learn more!

This was amazing! What a great way to get started. You are correct that chanting the words first is the best way.

At 76 years young I am studying to become a Bat Mitzvah in May 2015. Good that I know the alef-bet and vowels and that I practice reading Hebrew during services. I am SO very glad to have found your video! The trope was not making sense UNTIL your explanation, visual and vocal. Thank you. Todah rabah! (transliteration is MUCH more difficult for me so being able to read the actual Hebrew is very fulfilling.

I'm so glad to have been able to help. I've gotten way behind in putting up the full series, but rest assured, I haven't forgotten about it. I'm sure it must be very fulfilling to be doing what you're doing. Keep it up. It only gets better!

@@mikeweis64 Cantor Weiss one important question? as Purim is approcahing I want to learn to chant the Megillah, but I am new to the system of cantillation, will I be able to learn to chant the Megillah Esther in a month? I know my ? could be very silly, but I would like your view and advise, Thank you so very much for your videos that you post on the subject of Cantillation G-d bless!

@@richardkaznyoung7711 Since I don't know you, there's no way for me to answer that question properly. However, if you apply yourself to a small piece of text, I don't see any reason not to try. I have a whole series on cantillation for Megillat Esther here on KZbin. Hopefully, they will help.

Hello Mr. Weis, I just subscribed to your channel. Also, I just started reading the Zohar and came across the word cantillation, of course, it made sense for me to put a face on the word and search KZbin for meaning. I am grateful for your work I now have a better grasp of its meaning. Your video is easy to follow. I have to ask, the magnifier, how do you turn that it on/off? I have a web design class and never seen that tool. Can you please point me to where it's located so that I might explore its usage. Thanks
@mikeweis644 жыл бұрын
Hi David, so glad that you've found the videos helpful. I created that magnifier on an old Mac using a free app. Don't even remember what it was called, but there was a keystroke combination that turned it on/off.

Why don't we chant the Shema the way you chanted it?
@cantorsassembly35494 жыл бұрын
Early in the 20th Century, a Rabbi/Cantor named Israel Goldfarb popularized a number of melodies, some of his own, and some from composer/cantors of the 19th Century. The way we chant Shema is derived from Salomon Sulzer, who lived in the mid 1800s.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 I found out by just simply translating a few of the first words and Google.

I have read that there are several different melodies, based on your background and also which part of the scriptures you are reading. Which melody is this- Ashkenazi? Also, is this guy using the same melody, or a different one? kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5LCmGSHhNlsr5I It sounds similar, but the tipchah is a bit different.
@mikeweis649 жыл бұрын
+AnotherRandomAlias This is based on Polish-Lithuanian. It is a variant of the one that I do. Some of the variants sound so different, it's almost like they're completely different, but their overall structure and flow is the same.

+Devora Clark I don't have a specific source on this, but you can check out Trope Trainer and see if that program offers Egyptian Sephardic as an option. I know that program does have Sephardic options. Also, here is a website that has the entire Torah chanted in Yemenite trope. Good luck. www.maharitz.co.il/?CategoryID=355&ArticleID=2916

Not really sure I understand the question. It's an oral tradition, but there are certain communities whose versions have become dominant, especially with the advent of written music. My guess is that before 150 years ago, there was probably a much wider variation from community to community.
