My first memory as a toddler was hearing the Beatles, I Wanna Hold Your Hand (pre Mandela title) on the radio of my dads '57 Buick. I was left alone in the car while my father was in the County Courthouse on, I assume, some sort of legal matter. It was a different era back then, kids could be left in cars. My second memory is seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and listening to my slightly older cousins screaming at the TV. I knew then, being a musician was the job for me. It's the same story as recounted by...how many people? The spell was cast perfectly. Great story from Lou. Highly entertaining. (Ya just don't see enough of Doug Lewhellen these days. :) )

Thank you Mike for the opportunity to share some of my best lifetime moments in the music recording studio biz! Very much appreciated Sir! But I have" so many more" real experiences to tell like when I met George Harrison and Tom Petty at Westlake studio in 1988 while all of them were in to record their hit song Handle With Care in one night. The ONLY time in my entire life when I was honestly STAR STRUCK the moment I became face to face with George. I was totally speechless and I'll never forget the expression on Georges face!

Fascinating name "traveling Wilburys", said to be from a phrase of george harrisons related to a studio sound recording technique, "we'll bury it in the mix". Cute story but unbelievable. For one thing no one would name their band after such a frivolous turn of phrase and for another, considering Billy (Bill/Will), the whole "I BURIED Paul/cranBERRY sauce" thing from StrawBERRY Fields Forever, and the close association of several members of the supergroup to Billy Shears/William Shepherd or Will", it seems possible that "WilBURYS" is a wordplay on the idea of burying Paul (i.e. Will/Bill/Billy) as well as a reference to cranBERRIES/strawBERRIES. To make matters worse, one anecdote (origin not confirmed) has it that "John Lennon admitted to saying “I buried Paul,” but insisted that he did not mean that he literally buried Paul as some thought during the “Paul is dead” hype. John claims he merely meant that he was too loud and that Paul couldn’t be heard. To use the word “bury” is very common when one player drowns out another". In other words, the exact same meaning as George Harrison's "We'll bury it in the mix". Thus both Lennon and Harrison here appear to be speaking as one with respect to "burying" Paul (or "Will") - musically and/or literally - 20 odd years apart.

...moreover, if this theory is correct then they achieved their goals as mccartneys albums from 1986's press play onwards did virtually no business at all commercially or critically whilst traveling wilburys vol 1 sold 3 millioncopies in the united states alone and won the grammy for best record by a vocal rock group so in terms of their respective professional careers, harrison figuratively speaking did indeed "bury Will" (or "Paul") with the project. So he could quite truthfully claim that he (and Jeff Lynne whose own involvement with and contribution to the Beatles is probably very different and more significant than what anyone but a select few - hardly any of whom are still alive - know for sure) like Lennon before him, "buried Paul". All of which makes the band name "Traveling Wilburys" very interesting.

Thanks very kind of you! Thank you. I would have told more stories but our time was very limited. Tell Mike you would enjoy having me back for a 2nd podcast? ha ha,...but seriously you'd love to hear my experience meeting george Harrison and Tom Petty while they were at Westlake recording handle with care in one night. One of my westlake buddies engineered that session and he told me some funny things GH said during that night including who REALLY played the harmonica track at the end of the song.. NO,..it wasn't Bob Dylan like everyone would assume.

Well said! Back in my NJ home studio days (before my musical partner turned into Mr. Dick Hyde,..) he was quite normal anc charming with a quirky sense of humor. Anyways,..yes those were THE days,..we were just having fun using the opportunity to team together to record and produce original music for almost 4 years. We took our craft VERY seriously while making sure we were having fun doing it.

More like I was actually a serious clown. I did accomplish one goal which was learning intricate details how to arrange and produce pop rock music. Couldn't have had a better teacher than producer Keith Forsey. However it was a little too late because my only intention was to use all my knowledge producing my former partners music. We made a great team. we both enjoyed tha same styles of music especially the english bands during the new wave years from the early 80's. Then after befriendimng KF it felt like a dream because it jkust couldn't be real? But it was then my partner totaly fucked it all up royally. ( years of hard dedicated work recording our music ALL down the drain in 5 minutes after he ruined my good reputation with Keith Forsey in a major way. None the less,...fast foward some 35 years later it sure makes a GREAT story now. The lesson is I have no regrets. It is better to have siezed on the moment and fail rather than grow old looking back and saying "what if I had?" Like JL says,..."I found out". LOL
