Hi! I am from a group called Unified flyers Philippines, and for our beginners (in free flight not on caring for birds) they all have cockatiels and they are all free flight 😁 cockatiels are amazing at flying, our recorded flight time is 17 mins with 2 sun conure. Not just that, cockatiel are all high flyers. I have a video but it was all in Filipino language haha. Anyway! Congratulations to Mikey's recovery 😊 so glad to see him flying and become a bird again.

I would love to free flight my budgies! They’re super great with flying and recalls, my house is big and very spacious. Sadly, I could not take them outside :,) Too many ospreys, magpies, great horn owls, outdoor cats.

Felix Howard yeah he’s in love with my dad but he’s too young, we just figured out the breeder gave him to us force weened. So he’s still not ment to be even thinking about flying... buuut he does a little bit of recall, and I’m not even gonna try and get into it. The thing hates me. I cant refill his food without loosing blood. So I’m just gonna let everyone else deal with him. But the bad bit is that I was the one who researched everything, but too bad, they can pet him under the wings and let him sit on everyone’s shoulder. Ahh too bad

I've had cockatiels. They are extremely maneuverable fast and agile flyers. Highly intelligent as well. Definitely trainable for flying outside

What you'll notice about cockatiels is that they have a flight style similar to the larger birds (they scout high above the trees and navigate more on a large scale rather than zipping through the forest like conures), but they are also very cautious and beholden to their instincts. I have found that location selection is absolutely CRITICAL when it comes to flying these birds. Naturalistic settings with some open space and some trees are best. Suburban/urban/"built up" areas are a hard no. Additionally, you must be ready to wait far longer with things like mastering tree descent (due to their lower confidence level) and your margin for error is very small compared to many other species.

I just found your videos and I'm so sorry your bird was hurt. I'm glad to see he is better here. I can truly sympathize with him. I fell last week and dislocated my shoulder. The pain of it was insane and after it was relocated I still couldn't use my arm if I had to move the shoulder. Please give him a (very gentle) hug for me. I've had cocaktiels the majority of my life. My dad had one and we got another one when I was young that has passed away 2 years ago as result of a brain tumor. The last one we had was very very territorial. He wouldn't let anybody but the people he knew get close to him. Unless he was passed along from us to another in which case he pretty much trusted us that the other person could be trusted. One of the sweetest pets I've ever owned, but they are for sure a handful. Cockatiels are very cheeky like you said and will try and try again to do things you don't want them to do.

I know this is a year old but, Mikey just showed the resilience of animals. All parrots are whether live caught or breed or wild animals. Parrots haven't been in our human world long enough to loose their healing skills. I'm not surprised he healed so quickly. Primates are the same. I watch them and study wild macaques. I've seen them suffer horrendous injuries, loose limbs, jaws ripped from them and recover.

When I was growing up we raised cockatiels. We did not clip their wings. We had one escape out of the front door, luckily in the summer, we are in Michigan... That boy flew around our small town for about 6 days when one of my friends actually recognized him up in a tree at the elementary school about a mile away from our house and we were able to get him out of the tree and back home. Tiny but so smart!

When we had the Bird Meet at my house...there were macaws, Amazons...all these amazing birds...but which bird stole the hearts of everyone there? Baby boo..... the Budgie. This thing had soooo much personality packed into his little body! I would totally get a small bird if I didn’t have cats and dogs. And while my dogs and cats are fairly bird friendly, I just wouldn’t want to risk a smaller bird.

i have one budgie she has so much personality i love her to death but i always have to worry about my cats, but with my bigger birds i don’t have to worry because my cats are scared but i think they would think that my budgie was a toy or something

so happy to see mikey back on his wings! yes, over here in canada/usa we call it a door; i mean, technically, you COULD go in and out of the car with it. so, a "3 door hatchback" and so on. BUT if it's just a trunk, it's just a trunk. also omg, Ola's birds were so pretty. i mean, 'tiels are always cute... but they've got so much variety in their colors and patterns, and those two were stunning.
