People often bring up the fact that the dexterity, athleticism, strength, and physical endurance exhibited by skaters would be transferrable to other sports... that the array of skills necessary to excel at skating would naturally fit with other more "mainstream" sports. But I wonder about the psychological, cognitive, and emotional components inherent to skating? In what other walks of life would those more brain-space attributes find homes? I'm a teacher... I skated for years-I can definately say that the mental approach to skating has given me some clarity about my teaching. I feel like I approach instruction from a completely different angle than most educators. It's almost like how skaters look at some piece of construction and envision a trick on it, I do the same with my content. I look and think about things differently and I don't force my students to fit into a mold, I let them approach the material and express themselves differently. I don't know. Anyway, great episode. This has been my TedTalk.

I’m currently an English Masters student and couldn’t agree more. I’m in a course dedicated to teaching English composition to students. We create lesson plans as per usual class projects and I’m working out a method that would orchestrate skateboarding perspectives and theory into lecture. I’m certain there is a manner of doing so.
@funkydankspliff3 жыл бұрын
I’m a software engineer and the biggest transferable skill I have from skateboarding onto my career, is persistence. It has allowed me to solve problems or finish things with extreme focus and not giving up when I run into problems but rather to push thru them or approach them differently when it seems insolvable
@blinkifyouhearme3 жыл бұрын
Yup. Some of us look at common problems differently. Or we see many people use a thing the same way and think we can use it differently. I’ve learned so much about myself and the world around me because I explore it with the eyes of a skateboarder. Skateboarding is a great analogy for so many things. Funny to me is how in software development, “skateboard” is used to imply a basic, simplified version of an app. True. But also so much more complex than some non-skaters think.
@acoustictreatmentservices99263 жыл бұрын
Definitely. I quit skateboarding when I was 15-16 years old and I can thank skateboarding for giving me my work ethic, balls, and fitness. I was working construction 16 hour days when everyone had already quit. I was making money. I found success in the music industry so much easier than success in the skateboard industry. It was so easy compared to being an “athlete”. Life got the volume turned down and became much easier after skateboarding.
@GoodMorningJoel3 жыл бұрын
I think Chris was on the right side of the conversation around 2:00:00 It sounds like Mikey is basically talking about getting interns to work "for exposure" and I assure you that shit is NOT viable, no matter how high profile the people you're working for are. The comparison I like to make is this: Think about your favorite album of all time. Now who illustrated the cover for that album? Would you even be able to say, off the top of your head? It's also like, yeah skateboarders will do anything to try and make a name for themselves...they shouldn't! Those companies should've been paying you for the time and effort you were putting in to essentially market their brand, just as any other non-skateboard company should. Tbh it's frankly kinda fucked how normalized that lifestyle is within skateboarding...
@peacelovebrad3 жыл бұрын
The whole "for exposure" thing normalizes limiting opportunities to people who don't have to pay their own bills. In so many Nine Club interviews, someone will mention a friend who would have been one of the best pros, but they had to focus on providing for their families or had to make a living before they could count on steady income from skating. It's the same thing with every artistic and professional field and with humanity in general: the best minds and the best potential will die in obscurity without ever having access to the opportunity to reach their potentials. The slums have always been full of would-be Nobel laureates. On a global scale, we're losing our best creators, inventors, scientists, et cetera to poverty. That's why there's all this fear of China: it's just a huge chunk of the world's population finding opportunity for the first time. That's why Lula in Brazil was hated by the white rich class--fuckers didn't want their precious offspring to have to compete with the huge black and indigenous population that was rising up. Think of music: you can't stop poor people from making music, and if you know the history of good music then you know that most of it comes from the masses, like the descendants of enslaved people in the American South. Imagine what else the masses could contribute to the world if they had access to not just instruments, but the means of education, production, and everything else that a lot of us take for granted. In the US, kids who would pursue art are way less likely to do that now because they gotta pay off the student loan debts...we gotta take a hard look at what it means to accept a status quo of unpaid or underpaid labor for art.

That’s why people should skate for fun and not money. Pros and ams don’t get paid much unless you’re the top 10 percent or a popular public figure and not just a skater
@Elraurko3 жыл бұрын
I get the sentiment, the right kind of exposure definitely does have somewhat of a value but as a musician who is constantly asked to play venues for nothing but ‘exposure’ this kinda pssd me off. Exposure doesn’t put food on the table, pay the rent, pay for the tools needed for the job or the fuel needed to get there. The promise of exposure is not a contract nor is it a definitive payment or true recognition of someone’s hard work. Know your worth! 👊
@zarate1om3 жыл бұрын
This is true for many industries. I am a photographer and this attitude is everywhere. Companies will reach out to you saying they want an “ambassador” for their social media, listing the benefits of the exposure, then, once you are reeled in, provide a “ generous discount” on their product for you to represent their company. It’s purely a money grab and a front on behalf of the companies, and if we as consumers within the community foster and perpetuate this attitude, it will only lead to companies holding an unwieldy amount of power over their skaters. Ironically, it’s in the same vain as when Taylor mentioned how companies do not want you discussing wages, it takes the power from the company.

Mikey, how will Commune be different from say Fundrise once you open up to the masses for crowd-funding? You did mention the possible $5k min. entry (instead of $500 for Fundrise) which I think is fine. But aside from that, the main things I don't like about Fundrise are #1: 5-year minimum hold on your investment or else you pay a penalty for early withdrawal. Even that would be ok with me if not for #2 which is: Fundrise reserves the right to decline your withdrawal (redemption) anytime at their discretion. Will Commune carry such a disclaimer as well?

Some people don't want the responsibility of owning a home , others rather just pay rent and keep it simple. In regards to his apartment building , that's a rental investment property. You really don't buy a home for yourself as an investment property , because you plan on living in it for life. If the dude made money and bought an apartment building to rent out to make money , he's smart. The downside of renting imo is that your landlord can raise the rent , so the guy at the end of that video claiming " I know I have a fixed payment , I know what to expect each month..
