Correct me if I'm wrong gentleman, but the "no liar rule " in sit-downs is to prevent provocation . Insults are typically answered with insults which gets you that much closer to violence. And the whole idea of the sit-down is to keep it civil and come to a peaceful resolution. It's the same reason why there is so much etiquette among most inmates in prison, because once a situation escalates to raising one's voice, there's nowhere to go but up

Couple of points, think it might of been Sammy who said the reason why they were not worried about getting clipped at the commission meetings is that if that was to happen then none of the bosses would ever have the confidence to meet after that because of the fear it could happen to them next, it was a form of self preservation. Also Michael asks why the other bosses weren’t voted in, surely that’s because they were picked by their predecessor. Vic was chose by ducks, chin by Benny Squint.

Very informative episode, gentlemen. RJ asked about a precedent for killing a boss in a Commission meeting. While not exactly a Commission meeting, in 1932 the Pittsburgh boss was called in to explain the killing of three brothers (the three Volpe brothers were killed at the same time). John Bazzano basically said that as boss he could do what he wanted. A group of leading Cosa Nostra members ice picked him to death and later dumped his body. Police arrested fourteen high-ranking members as being at the meeting (article doesn't say how the police found out, but it sounds like somebody informed) including Joe Traina and Robert Anastasio of the Mangano Family, Johnny "Bath Beach" Oddo and Tony 'the Chief" Bonasera of the Profaci Family, and several Pittsburgh, New Jersey, and Buffalo guys. I wouldn't be surprised if Vincent Mangano, Lucky Luciano, Vito Genovese, and Joe Profaci were at the meeting too, but they weren't arrested. Ultimately all the people who were arrested were released since no one confessed.

Not to promote Gas pipe as the paragon of truth (he definitely wasn't), but Cosa Nostra at its core is about technicalities and legalities - "IF" this Fall 1988 was the 1st Commission meeting since the Paul hit, then technically the Commission hadn't actually met to "certify" the new "Official" Boss of the Gambino family until John was in Louie Daps apt....

This is interesting. According to Gravano's book "Underboss" the Commission meeting from his book IS the same meeting from Casso's book. Sammys timeframe for the meeting was "toward the end of 1988". No month is mentioned. Sammy does mention, John Sr saying he was proud that his son was just "made". And Chin saying, I'm sorry to hear that. I think Casso's timeline is 4 months early and Michael was correct in his recollection. According to Gas Pipe's book, Corallo wanted Casso as the boss and Casso turned him down. Casso suggested making Amuso the boss and Gas became underboss. Carollo was OK with that arrangement. This was a great podcast, but RJ should have done more homework before bringing this all up. But then that's what made it a great podcast.

Per Casso's book the meeting where the commission approved Gotti as official boss of the "Gambino" family was sometime in August of 1988. Assuming Gotti and Gravano voted for John, Gotti also received approval from The Chin, Benny Eggs, Gas Pipe and Vic Amuso. The book also said the Commission voted for the Bonano's to remain off of the commission, but Massino would remain boss of the Bonano's. I personally think this info on Massino is inaccurate because Rastelli didn't die until June 1991. Almost 3 years after this meeting in August 1988. The Commission also approved Vic Orena as acting boss of the Columbo family based on Junior Persico's approval from jail. At the time of this meeting, they all knew Gotti had Paul killed. Let me know Michael if you want any other info from Casso's book.

Vincenzo is the son of Antonino DiLeonardo, one of the oldest mafiosi in New York, who died at the age of 90 in 1927. Antonino was a close associate of the boss Salvatore D'Aquila, and Vincenzo was a trusted member. He is the grand-father of Michael DiLeonardo..Mikey really comes from Mafia royalty!
