Lavrovsky’s nobility, elegance and poise have yet to be matched, without forsaking of course his compelling masculinity. He truly is one of the most dreaming Princes to ever grace a stage. That take at 03:26 is everything ❤️ And Mme. Timofeyeva is a force of nature on her own right. Very few ballerinas can manage to pull off the strength, resolve and fury of a wild mare while being so captivating, feminine and lyrical at the same time. Terekhova, Alexandrova and Lander are another selected few. Stunning Amazons they are! ❤️

yes, it tears at one emotionally, and with an added angle for me - my mother used to play - recall her practising the Bruch violin concerto in a room at home with padded walls so as not to disturb us. the second movement of the concerto is a romantic emotional torture chamber.

It’s really too bad that more men weren’t seen outside of the USSR more during the height of the Cold War; the dynamism and athleticism of Lavrosky here is every bit as good as Nureyev, who was described as “bursting” into Western ballet and redefining the role of the danseur! He was known for (among other things) the speed of his....I have to call them “spins” bc the French term doesn’t do it....but here we see Lavrosky turning just as fast, and so does Vladimir Vasiliev, who raised this movement to a new art form! And Timofeyeva is so strong and athletic, as well, and I can’t say how satisfying it is to see a _woman_ dancing! I don’t watch contemporary productions of ‘Bayadere’ very often bc the women are so skeletal with their midriffs on display that I can’t stand to see it! The artistry of this pair is simply lovely to see, thank you so much!

yes, so many great under-seen in the West talents - only glimpses during those money making tours, like the Bolshoi 1956 tour. i was lucky to see Vladimir Vasiliev and Maximova in 'Giselle' in Paris in the early 1970s - just too my breath totally away.

yes, i was surprised by the degree of the technical skills here - breath-taking - i love the ballet and really enjoy seeing different dancers in the lead roles.

Absolutely gorgeous. Soul caressing. But guys do not underestimate the orchestra! It not only moves the dancers but I think it also enhances how we see them. The first violins are magical, as in SL second act too. Intensely lyrical without ever descending into schmaltz. Take a look at Lavrovsky bowing to that extreme high note. So manly...! Never an effete moment.

hi Sima. yes, the orchestra is very good - in London as a kid watching the RB the orchestra for ballet was not always of the highest standard ... with Ashley Lawrence being the main culprit. it is so great when the music can be an equal partner with the dancing and so on. yes, soul balming lyrical without being chocolate box lid!

and the tempi are at a speed that is musically satisfying - tougher on the dancers at times but great for the audience. i've seen it slow to the point of dragging and awkward for the dancers in the past too often.

Two amazing dancers, Nina was so gifted... she danced with artistry and feelings... her daughter is also a ballerina, they both moved permanently to Israel in 1991. She was such an ideal partner for Lavrovsky. They both left me breathless.

the abysmally slow tempos favored by dancers today has less to do with making accommodations for technical perfection & more to do with modern-day dancers merely wanting to indulge in making geometric poses. In fact, this is what most classical dancers do now - they pose, rather than dance. Any dancing that does occur is merely one pose transitioning into another.

i agree - quite against the proper tempo-original of the music. Maximova and Vasiliev talked to camera in a documentary about this very issue.

WOW..... pure poetry, and some people say that Solor the Warrior has to be tough... not in love, only on the battlefield, it left me breathless and my eyes started tearing up. And that music of Minkus....... and that violin......

yes, a beautiful alternative way of approaching Solor! yes that violin - my mother played violin and as a kid i remember her practising the Bruch Violin Concerto to play with the Melbourne Sym. Orch. :)

Exactly.. warrior is a real person too, tough when he has to be and gentle in love and besides, so much of this music is so delicate I can't imagine it being danced with macho bravura. How cold he be tough in the Kingdom of Shades? As for Bruch, it's one of my favorite concertos along with Korngold, Paganini, Saint Saens and Tchaikovsky. Violin was always one of my favorite instruments along with cello and classical guitar (my grandmother played 12 string). I was lucky to live a block from opera theater in Lvov when I as a child I saw my first Swan Lake and Rigoletto and later around the corner from Bytom Opera Theater in Poland where I was even once on stage in a play .. I was a child when I saw Wieslaw Ochman (are you familiar with this tenor?) sing there in Halka of Moniuszkow. It's a beautiful but sad opera (but then with exception of Bell Canto) most of them are :)

i love the Bruch, as much as anything for the associations i mentioned - and love Korngold's 'Marietta's Lied' - one of the most beautiful meaningful pieces of music i know. i love the cello - and saw/heard Jacqueline de Pre play the Elgar in London as a kid. lucky to be near a theatre! i traveled round Poland as a kid - Warsaw, Krakow, Olsztyn and Lizbarvaminksy (wrong spelling!) to visit friends.

i first heard Marietta's Lied sung in concert by Renee Flemming - i was totally wiped out - dropped tears - those around me were more than a bit surprised! Korngold wrote quite a lot for Hollywood movies. thanks so much for the spelling of Lizbark Warminski - i was way off!!! i just remembered the sound and not too well at that. yes i traveled round Poland - in November and coming from a sub-tropical climate was cold - i used to hug those traditional masonry stove, ceramic stove, tile stove often in the corners of rooms. i was wondering how your name here came about - nice reference. And as different as they are, I also love Tsiskaridze as Solor, he is more gentle and nostalgic with more grace which a lot of people don't like in Solor saying warrior should be a warrior but Nikolai makes him look like a real person who can be a tough warrior and a gentle man in love who suffers, feels pain and is tender. And that is what I love about him, his sensitivity

Tsiskaridze as Solor is great - i like the grace and sensitivity he brings - another way to look at the role which works well with the libretto.

А кто сказал ,что Нуреев лучший? Не считаю ,что это так . Да, он один из лучших . Для меня Лавровский намного лучше . Как хореограф Нуреев вообще никакой ,не нравятся его постановки. Вот Григорович это да , глыба ,величина, талант . Нина Тимофеева выдающаяся балерина бесспорно, как и Лавровский выдающийся танцовщик.
