Mikko Mäkelä talks wIth QUEERGURU about his new critically acclaimed film SEBASTIAN

Queerguru first met London based queer Finnish filmmaker Mikko Mäkelä in 2017 when his first feature film MOMENT IN THE REEDS premiered at BFI Flare Film Fest in London . Now some 7 years later his 2nd feature SEBASTIAN had its World Premiere at Sundance fast attracting both critical acclaim and distribution deals for global Theatrical Release.
Its the story if Max, an aspiring young writer in London, who begins living a double life as a sex worker in order to research his debut novel.
We caught up with Mäkelä at the Provincetown Film Festival, where the film was on our TOP MUST-SEE- LIST to learn more, and celebrate the films critical success

I don’t mean to be critical but I think Queerguru TV might be a safe place for my opinion. I absolutely adore all my - I say “my” because it is “my” collection of the best queer films I have watched over the last 35 years. There are different degrees of love for each but bottom line is I love them all. My frustrations is - I am 73 years old - and all I can say is “oh damn, another coming out story.” Is that all, as queers, we have to offer? The coming out films are usually about young people, but not only. There are those about people in their 30’s, 40’s 50’s. But it seems five years after the coming out story the queer people become invisible. They have no lives after coming out. Our tribe is unique in that open relationships means less material as compared to unfaithfulness in the hetero tribe. A million films about that. It’s a tough deal. Youth sells. Two of my favorites that are more than about youth are a German film called Jonathan and a French film called Lie With Me.
