Limiting connection sharing again with 'Change TTL'
By using MikroTik we can limit the connection from the client. For example, when we need network settings where the connection can only be done with one device. If we want to propagate the acquired connections again, it cannot be done.
We may use this mechanism to limit sharing of wireless connections in public areas or hotspot services. This is so that the connection can only be used by devices that are directly connected to the router, and can no longer be shared by devices from the client using a router, connection sharing applications on a laptop or tethering and hotspot via a smartphone.
We will change the TTL (Time To Live) value of the download packet that goes to the client. Here later we will change it to the value '1'. For Mikrotik we can do this configuration on the IP-Firewall-Mangle menu.
That way the Device / Smartphone that is directly connected to the Access Point can access the internet, if other devices activate Tethering or share the connection again, the device connected to the Tethering cannot access the internet. This is because the packet going to the device is being dropped because the TTL value in the packet header is '0 (Zero)'.
This also applies to routers connected to the main access point, where the internet connection is propagated again through a router connected to the main access point, so the device connected to the router cannot access the internet.
* Note:
In concept, every data packet that passes through the network from the source address to the destination address will be added with the TTL value information. This TTL value will be reduced one by one every time it passes through the gateway (Layer3 device / Router).
