MIKU?? - CLUPPO - VOICE - FIRST REACTION

We’re checking out Voice by Cluppo for the first time and we’ve got to admit…this one totally caught us by surprise! We’ve been exploring the Band-Maid Ohrenje documentaries…but we haven’t reached Miku’s episodes yet so we’re still in the dark about Cluppo. We guessed it might be Miku, but honestly, we weren’t 100% sure. The person who requested this song told us it would all make sense later so we’re looking forward to connecting the dots when we watch her documentary!
We enjoyed this track big time! It’s got those Band-Maid vibes we love, and it’s just so catchy. We know you’ll definitely gives us spoilers in the comments if you know more about Cluppo. Thanks for hanging out with us and stay tuned for more reactions! Po!

Miku created a complex April Fool joke back in 2021. First, Band-Maid's record label announced a new artist joining their stable of artists. Her name was Cluppo and she'd just invented a new genre of music called HippyPoppo as well as releasing her first single, Peace & Love, and an MV with it. Then, over the next few months, Cluppo released 3 more superb MV's and an EP with 6 songs, the 4 with MV's and 2 other tracks without them, including this one. The hatofull EP has 6 songs, 3 of them have MVs (“PEACE&LOVE”, “Flapping Wings” and “POGO!”) and 3 others have not (“fuwafuwa”, “voice” and “Superstar”). Later, cluppo did a single and MV for the song “With you” as the ending theme for TV anime “Warau Arsnotoria Sun!” This year cluppo did a collaboration with TUMENECO in the song “Spread your Wings” for the mobile game Touhou LostWord.

By the way, the songs on Hatoful were tributes to her bandmates. "Flapping Wings" is for Miku, "Peace and Love" for MISA, the band's resident hippie, "Fua-Fua" (don't know what it means) is for Kanami, and Pogo, is for Akane. Pogo was a famous gorilla in the Tokyo Zoo. "Superstar" is named for the entire band. Cluppo had male artists, not her bandmates, as her backing band. Her bandmates felt this was Miku's own solo project and they didn't want to influence her decisions on the music.

She gathered up an interesting back-up band of musicians from other bands the Maids are friends of. So she got Shogo Yoshida from "Unchain" (which has recorded at least one song with lyrics by Kobato, sung by Saiki) on drums - Joe Nagaike from "Scoobie Do" on bass - and Yuki Tanabe (ex-"Bradio", a funk band) on keys (for some reason, he's a drummer otherwise) - alternatively Hiroki Tanaka from "Lego Big Morl" - vocals and guitar by Kobato herself.

The interesting thing about the Cluppo project is her Band-Maid band mates weren't involved musically but were very supportive, Akane even wanted Cluppo's autograph on a Cluppo T-shirt and CD, Miku thought she was a bit crazy for that. In one of Kanami's interviews about the Epic Narratives album she said she started to write the song Brightest Star for Miku as a Cluppo song, but it turned into a Band-Maid song anyway. The other Cluppo songs are just top notch J-pop/J-rock.

Yes- Miku for sure with her own take on music including Syth/pop, Jpop, and rock. The last track on this EP is a masterpiece called Superstar, where she pulls out all the stops and a song that I currently drum to. Please do a reacting to this song. The other band members are not known for sure and are only referred to a Crow 1, Crow 2 etc, although I'm pretty sure that the drummer is Shogo Yashida from the band Unchain. In 2016 this band produced an album- 20th Sessions, with guest singers, backing Saiki on the song Wonder with lyrics by Miku.

The lyrics for cluppo's songs are written by cluppo (Miku), and the music and performance are by a solo project group called Crow, the details of which are unknown. All the other members except Miku were very supportive of her solo career but did not participate. In addition to this combination, there is another song called "Spread your Wings" [Touhou LostWord feat. cluppo × TUMENECO] in which she participated as the singer cluppo.

Kobato means small pigeon. The last part (pigeon) is normally spelled hato. So hatoful is a mix of Japanese and English. Japanese has a phonological rule where sometimes a consonant h becomes b inside a composite word. Another example is the Band-Maid song Hibana which is hi (fire) + hana(flower) "spark". Also consider Cluppo. No L in Japanese so they use R and usually it is a consonant-vowel language so that initial C might be said as ku. So kuruppo, one of Miku's favorite words. The music is different, but still very entertaining in it's own right. And although all the members of Band-Maid support Cluppo, Akane is her biggest fan. This is Miku scratching her J-pop itch. The solo album was released as one if their April Fools Day specials. And you're right, Japanese female pop singers often do take onthst little girl singing voice. Which is why Saiki's voice stands out so much. She sings like a grown ass woman.

Cluppo is Miku's project. She is a genius when it comes to putting together groups, this is music that is more suited to her voice and not quite the style of Band Maid. If you didnt know, Miku created band maid also. When she plays live she has a different band and plays guitar. What is unknown is any involvement from band maid, they say no and all that has been said is she has help from crows. My own guess is the crows are at least Kanami writing some of the music but we have no way to know. Miku did perform as Cluppo before the Band Maid Live Stream concert a few years ago, effectively being an opener before band maid. Miku has basically two other groups from Band Maid. The original april fools joke Band Maiko, which is actually band maid. They take band maid songs, redo them with traditional instruments added and Miku rewrote the lyrics into the Kyoto dialect and there is one original song on that album. The 4th isnt really a different group, it is band maid doing many of their songs in full acoustic guitar versions. They have done a couple of live stream concerts of this, they also dont dress as maids. But if you want to hear some of these hard rock songs acoustic, then look for some of those videos. The first concert was during covid, the second was this year and has a bonus of Saiki playing piano. Cluppo has a couple of short albums, all great songs, Also for the MVs, Miku is not dressed as a maid.

Miku's Covid-time side project lol. Not my sound, but glad Miku is supported by the band to do her stuff. Miku has said that nobody from the band was involved in the project, but I still have my doubts about Kanami. Writing credits for the song have gone to some mysterious person named "Crow" - whom nobody has yet identified - so Kanami's involvement wouldn't surprise me (she said that she would like to write music for other artists, but that Band-Maid is currently using up everything she's writing anyway).

Yep, Miku with her very own 'April Fool's joke' that has become bigger than the one with certain Maikos. :) Also the likelihood that we'll hear more from cluppo in the future is a lot higher (even if I'm still hoping for the return of the 5 Maikos at some point 🤞🏻). This new genre, which she calls 'Hippie-Poppo' btw., is meant to spread love and peace as a kind of counterbalance to Band-Maid's 'World Domination through music'... Check out TRiDENT! The lead vocalist is Asaka-chan. Ambivalent and Spoopy are both excellent! She has that high pitched voice. They’re good but I guess that’s the reason I don’t listen to them more. I prefer alto to mezzo-soprano vocals.
