My wife is Ukrainian and she speaks Ukrainian when she calls her parents. When we were first living together I would constantly tell her to stop yelling at her parents and she would look at me like I’m crazy, they were discussing a recipe or something and it sounded like they were ready to kill each other. It’s a very passionate and emotional language.

Yeah, I’ve learned that it depends on what your native language is. One of my friends in high school was Sudanese and her native language was Denka. The first time I heard her speak it was on the phone to her mom during an after school club, and when she hung up I asked her if she was alright and she looked so confused. I had thought she and her mom were arguing, when really she was just telling her what time I’d be dropping her off. The longer we were friends, the less “harsh” it sounded. Language is a fascinating thing.

Russian is a beautiful language. To see what is happening right now over there is tragic and heartbreaking. My ancestry is partially Russian and I’m trying to learn it now myself. If you ever listen to Russian Orthodox chants and hymns I think most would feel different about the language and how angelic it can truly sound

yet, she is Ukrainian. I find it tragic that most of my Ukrainian people speak Russian nowadays. It is a consequence of USSR and I hate it

@@LusyBeaufort see this is the problem. There’s this overwhelming sense of pride in things like nations, and language etc. it’s relatively important. Can’t really blame the USSR when it hadn’t even been a thing far prior to that.

That's actually really interesting...when my Russian grandparents hear some German conversation it sounds to them as if a dog is barking and apparently when German people (at least those I met so far) would say the same thing about the Russian language, so.... I guess it's a mutual feeling 😅
