Well there's a lot to unpack here, since I've lived in Milan for 13 years now: The Trams: -the 1928 trams (aka Peter Witt) are indeed in good condition, and considering that out of the original 500 there's still around 150 of them running around it's quite impressive (also considering that in 2028 they'll turn exactly 100 years old). But there's been quite a history of bias and favouritism from the transport company ATM towards them, because they're a "symbol of the city". No one is denying that, but most of them are used on certain routes that move a lot of people, and they're simply not good enough in terms of accessibility. But despite the complaints (especially nowadays), ATM is still insisting on keeping them. -the 1955 trams (the two-coached) are divided into two sub-series, the 4600 series that is still original interms of aesthetics and it has air brakes, and the 4700 series which have been exponentially refurbished, with the addition of an AC unit above the conductor's sear, new green dot matrix displays (and a small LED display on the rear section) and a new paintjob + they have an all-electric braking system. -the 1976 trams (the Jumbotrams/4900 series) are also divided into two sub-classes, the first one from 4900 to 4950 which has been completely revamped by AnsaldoBreda (now Hitachi Rail Italy), with new interiors, new motors, new paintjob and LED displays, and the second one from 4951 to 4999 which is still kept in original conditions, for the small exception that they're too being "repainted" with the new paintjob (which ATM aims to apply onto all trams). The whole series was originally supposed to be the used on the "high speed tram" lines 90/91 (which are operated by trolleybuses), but the project never came to be, and so these trams were instead re-purposed to be used on regular city routes. -the Eurotrams (7000 series) have a rather turbulent history. These were the first ever low floor vehicles to be purchased by ATM in 2000, and they originally served on high capacity routes such as the "metrotram" route 7, routes 4 and 14. But since Milan, as any other Italian city before the 2000s, was only familiar with Italian engineering, the Eurotrams quickly became hard to maintain, since the tram was originally a Socimi project (former Milan based bus, coach, tram and train builder), but it was later acquired by Bombardier, which radically changed it's approach to its construction and maintenance. And thus as soon as the 26 vehicles arrived in Milan, one of them was already put aside to be used as a parts donor. And then ATM "banned" ultra-long trams from being in the city centre (which sounds like absolute bollocks), and they're now limited exclusively to route 15. This is also the only tram in Milan where you can smoke, in a way, because the rearmost section is obscured from the driver's view and the light don't work, so it's usually occupied by dodgy people and crackheads (since route 15 serves places such as Gratosoglio and Rozzano, which are known to house many "chavs"). There are plans to refurbish them in some way, shape or form, but for now nothing is being done and they keep falling apart with each passing day. -the Sirio/Sirietto (7100 and 7500/7600 series) are so far the newest of the bunch, since ATM was the launch customer of Sirio trams back in 2002. And to say the least, they too are starting to age a bit badly, considering the continuous skreaking of the trams, the sometimes malfunctioning bogies and in general the trashed interiors (but I see none in your video, so I think you got a lucky run). In general, new trams are performing badly because ATM is pretty biased towards the 1928 ones. -in the near future new Stadler Tramlink trams are gonna enter service, which are gona replace the original unrefurbished 4600s and 4900s. Plus, you kinda got unlucky that you missed out on the last remaining inter-urban tram route that went from Comasina to Limbiate, since it closed down on 30th of September last year (which is mainly because ATM didn't care about maintaining or refurbishing the route) The trolleybuses: As I said before, the routes 90/91 run mostly on reserved lanes, which were originally supposed to be used by the "high speed trams", but since the tram project never went ahead, but the lanes were in some way built, they just put the trolleybuses in their place. And as I can see in the video, you only managed to get a ride on Van Hools and Trollinos (which despite running efficiently on reserved lanes, they're absolutely terrible performance-wise, especially the mid-engined Van Hools during wet road conditions and also some of them sound like "washing machines" because of their broken motors + the green coloured trolleybuses have a terrible habit of often running late, because either the drivers are way too shy to go fast or because 2-3 of them are stuck together and they ruin the timetables), and that's a bit unlucky from your side, because you missed out on classic 1990s Socimi and Bredabus trolleybuses, which go very fast, they have AMAZING DC choppers and they have lots of character.

In regards to the Limbiate tram, would that be the 179 by any chance? And has it been replaced by a bus route?

@@gabrielstravels yes the Limbiate tram is officially known as route 179, and now it's replaced by bus route 165

@@mdukasa they're definitely supposed to be back (according to the contracts), but only time and Italian bureaucracy will tell, since they almost never complete projects on time

The 1920s trams look fantastic, especially that one at night. I can't believe how badly maintained that first modern one was. That's great with the trolley buses. I must travel more on the Nottingham trams to experience more of the not on the roads parts.

The city of Milan decided to turn some vintage trams (the 1928 model) into moving restaurants. A very expensive tourist attraction

I would like to go to Milan and to ride on those lovely trams. As well going to other cities that have better transportation and cleaner trains. Those trams in Milan are so beautiful.

I feel like maybe why they keep the old trams in good condition is because they're kind of tourist trams and tourists are less likely to want to go on run down old trams whereas they just don't really bother doing that with the modern trams
@benolifts

This is most likely the case. Effort has been put into keeping the 1928 trams in perfect condition. They are there as a symbol of the city, plus they bring tourists to the city. But with the modern trams, little care is taken to keep them nice. Also the people who live in the suburbs trash the trams.

I conferm, also because the vintage trams only run in the center of the city.

Maybe the newer trams are stored in an outdoor depot where they are easily vandalized and the vintage trams are stored in an indoor depot. Or maybe the local italians are protesting to keep their heritage!

Not necessarily. The old trams are called Carrelli. Carrelli are also stored in depots on the outskirts. Two-tone yellow is the urban livery, green is the interurban. Interurban trams are the most run down
