georgeous lighting . wonderful the way it is done with the shadows on the faces of them kissing like a sillohette. ( spelling , sorry). and the way the little fibers of the fur of her hat are captured, the way the light crawls from above, in a downward fashion as she walks toward the camera, like the way her personal light has gone downward, and sank. sunk. well, you get the idea. great acting, as always. ann blythe, nice, reaction is perfect. what great art these movies were. how wonderful.

"We weren't expecting you, Mildred ... obviously." Great line from Zachary Scott. Fantastic black and white production from Warner Bros. The cinematographer on this film was Ernest Haller, who received an Oscar nomination. (He won a co-Oscar for his Technicolor work on Gone With The Wind in 1939.)

I had to do a huge long shot analysis of THIS scene, and i gotta say it was a very strong scene. The lighting and composition of the three characters is amazing.

Nothing can beat the movies of the 1940's and the way they were made.

I just had my exam yesterday for media studies. We had to write a essay on film noir and talk about the relationship between it as a media genre and the 1940s/50s American society making links to Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce and Blade Runner. If you ever have to write an essay for this bro, I got you covered. Feel free to message me or reply to this comment.

Ash Fernandes ayyy thanks bro😎!! We only had two essays in our class so far. One was about differentiating the femme fatale in the movies we saw, and the other essay was differentiating the noir "heroes".

Mildred shouldn't have turned on the headlights of the Caddy before trying to start it, those old 6-volt electrical systems....

+defundthewar I think it was in "Mommie Dearest" (the book), but didn't Joan also make another snide sarcastic remark about winning the Oscar for this movie?

I love this movie one of the best. From what I have read here the book differed from the movie in some areas. Would love to read it. I though Joan was very good in this as well as all the others. Ann Blythe was spectacular. I seemed to not see her much in anything after this that was on the level of this movie. Too bad.

continuity, i think we are supposed to fill in for ourselves that the two of them went back downstairs while mildred was trying to start the car. because vida did not pick up the gun , did she, before they went upstairs, and he was shot downstairs, right?

MONTE: {laughing} You don't have the guts to pull that trigger, and you know it! Now, give it to me... VEDA: {a bit fearfully} No... MONTE: Veda..... VEDA: I swear, I'll KILL you, Monte!!! MONTE: {menacing, moving towards her} Give me that gun, you little bitch- {Veda lets him have it}

BMW REDHEAD HEY GORGEOUS i agree mamita. tu sabe... great great film. i like the whole "neat perfect lookin hair"do, the chicks had in the olden days way better cinematography here,the guys all dress nice always in movies classic,not like today TOTALLY too over-sexual,today. and i love how he "regret i bet gettin murder/ shot up"cause listen at the end of WHOSE NAME he kall out for,NOT VEDA a spoil-goldigger,slut,but he call the lovely classy independent hard workin business woman mom, MILDRED.

Please. Didn't happen in the book. Also, casting is backwards. Veda should be played by Crawford. Mildred was a saint who's only fault was the spoiled/sociopathic daughter. Also, Monty needs to be played by a more athletic ethnic type. Anyone who read the book will tell you. Actually, Mildred should be played by a smaller/compact woman with good legs. By this final scene(please no guns) Veda was bigger/taller than mother. Peace all you classic's LA Noir fans!!!

It is way better than the book because of the Production Code. It would never have been as good if it had faithfully followed the book. It would have been impossible to film it the way it is here.
