Congratulations to the Maryland DOT for getting I-95 completed through Baltimore City back in the 1980s. I cannot even imagine the nightmare of having to reroute I-95 around EITHER side of the Beltway like they had to end up doing in DC.

It was the most expensive public works project in history at the time it was constructed. Just pocket change nowadays!

@@markkaminski2416 I remember it because my former girlfriend was well-connected in Baltimore at the time and she got to ride in one of the antique cars that also carried Baltimore Mayor William Donald Shafer through the tunnel immediately after the ribbon was cut.

@@joestewart8914 That project was a major boost for the construction trades in the Baltimore region. The principal contractor and construction manager was a joint venture of 3 mega general contractors. Kiewit out of Omaha Nebraska, Tidewater based in Hampton Roads Va. and Richardson Construction. Hundreds were employed during it's construction.

I95 drivers were directed to to 895, the old harbor tunnel, hazmats and propane had to take the beltway.

I can't say this tunnels name for nothing but used to love going through it and with being a railfan I definitely enjoyed seeing the rail yard if I could route myself through it I would when I was trucking.

The McHenry Tunnel was designed and built as part of the Interstate Network using 90% Federal Highway Fund and 10% local/state funding. However due to the high cost of the project in which the 10% state share would been over $70-80 million in the late 1970s it was decided for Maryland to finance its share through toll revenue, under the condition the tolls would be removed when the state paid off its full cost. However the tolls were kept in place since due to concern that a toll free I-95 would result in traffic imbalance in the adjacent Harbor Tunnel, with most vehicles using the toll free route, plus the fact Maryland has all statewide toll revenue pooled into a single fund, and not dedicated to a specific facility.
