I do remember an incident a musician recalled where he played the "worst possible note" during a performance and Miles Davis covered it up by riffing on the same crappy note a few times before switching back. Afterward the musician approached Miles Davis to apologize and received a blank look. After reminding him about how he played "a bad note" Davis looked offended and told him that ''there are no bad notes! That could have been really good. You don't know until you try it out."

This has nothing to so with his feeling of worth off the stage. He had a vision and 1 fleeting moment to complete it, and Herbie threw it off after likely being instructed what to do. @ireallydontknow8616 - Miles plays an ascending musical phrase on his trumpet. Herbie follows this up with a similar sounding phrase on the piano. At this moment, Miles didn't want a "dialog" with the piano. He would have preferred if Herbie just stayed silent -- or had played some subtle, supporting chord that harmonized with his meldoy -- rather than playing a melodic line that mirrored his melody.

Yes. You can even find his comments somewhere on YT. He says he'd played a chord that was completely wrong, and that he thought he'd ruined the evening and was frightened about Miles' reaction. Then, after glancing at him for two seconds, Miles just played something that made his chord sound right. Herbie says Miles taught him a lesson that night, and not just about jazz: instead of wasting your time grumbling about what should be and isn't, just embrace what's here and act accordingly. You might as well end up turning something wrong into something good. (Sorry, Herbie says that way better than me.)

You are on something else bro. This was the miles Davis band which had been established for 15 years at this point. Davis was undeniably the band LEADER, he decides who’s going to fill each instrument in his band on strict invite only and you’d be insane to turn down the opportunity in the Jazz world in the 60s and 70s and 50s. Hancock Carter and Williams have monumental respect for miles and in this moment miles wasn’t feeling the way Hancock was playing with him, but a few seconds later he’s back in the song. It’s Miles solo that Herbie is comping to and to not add onto a melodically, rhythmically, and dynamically exciting run played by the soloist probably left Mile’s unexcited and a little unimpressed by Herbie in that moment

You can refer to them as finger buttons, but we only call them that when we need to replace that particular part as they can get loose, unscrew off, and get lost. Uncomfortable to play that way but not impossible. However, in the process depressing them while playing, we generally just call them valves. I.e. the note "D" would be played by depressing the 1st and 3rd valves together, and the octave only the 1st valve.
