As with some of the comments below, I also discovered Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud whilst watching documentary about Miles “Birth of the cool” on the BBC. This was early in our lockdown, April 2020 ish. I went strait online a bought the Fontana 10 inch version and the DVD of the movie. I watched the movie first, which is wonderful, to get the music into context. Then listening to the sound track I see the movie in my minds eye. Therefore if you love this vinyl I'm sure you'll love the movie, highly recommended ... Great review really enjoyed it, watched it three times, thank you I now have even more context for Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud Hugs and

And I love this record, I heard it 20 years ago and was all struck by the mood.. In highlights one of Miles greatest attributes for setting an atmosphere!

I also have the Music on Vinyl 2-LP edition, absolutely fantastic. Fontana/Decca just released the re-issue of this album in Feb 2024 on a single 12" LP but I heard very mixed reviews, mostly negative. Anyway, stay well and keep up the great work.

Wonderful review! Rarely do I get as excited when a new KZbin video comes out. I fell in love with this record after watching the documentary about Miles “Birth of the cool” earlier this year. It recounted the story of this soundtrack too. The music moved me and fortunately Sam Records were in the process of repressing their facsimile of the original 10 inch Fontana release and I got my order in quickly. It’s a beautiful reissue and sounds amazing. Although, I have looked at the release with the bonus LP I decided on the Sam Records version which I don’t regret. Your comments make me think I should get this version as well to hear the bonus material. Great work as usual Allan.

Hi Gino - now I'm jealous about the 10 inch release! But I'm pretty happy with the double LP. The thing which it has to recommend it is the reverb-less recordings on the second LP. Though really, we are verging into completist territory. 🙂

I was looking for shots of an autoroute. Which then put me in mind of Charles Trenet, “Route Nationale 7”.

A good review. Again. Thanks. And your french pronunciation isn't bad at all 😊 I've had this record for some year now - it still holds and I like that it's at small (and not so known) "prelude" to what we got 1 1/2 years later with Kind of Blue: Both the modal style and that the musicians was given very few instructions before the recording. Sam Records has re-released it on a great sounding 10" lately. I watched the movie some time ago - nice b/w images from the 1950'ies Paris, but the plot and acting didn't hold today...

Thanks. I've never seen the film, need to make a point of it.
