Sitting in the back of a taxi at 4.00 am in Paris, the temple resting on the back window to look out thoughtfully at slow and smooth speed, the quays of the Seine and “elevator for the scaffold” on the car radio …that's life!

Wow! Yes indeed. I'm a writer and my my, what an absolute visual I just had, and what a scene this could be. Maybe lovers in the midst of an affair who have just parted ways after saying au revoir for a last, lingering time. Or the promise of something new. The possibilities are myriad.

He pulls so much feeling out of every note. He sustains and punctuates in such a fluid way. Its fitting that this video backdrop would have a photo of Miles at Jimi Hendrix's funeral, which also includes Jimi's number one, Devon Wilson, aka Dolly Dagger to Miles' right. Fitting bc Miles was a huge influence on Hendrix, and the love and respect went both ways. Hendrix took those techniques Miles was using and applying them to the electric guitar. Miles had a plunger, Jimi had a wah wah pedal. But Jimi had electricity and took it even further above and beyond. And to his great credit, in 1969 Miles Davis cited James Brown, Sly Stone, AND Jimi Hendrix as the people he was tuning in and turning on to. I'm not sure they would have played together, but Miles would have done some writing and arranging for his heir apparent. Rather than being threatened, it seems like Miles welcomed the Afrofuturism that James Marshall Hendrix was bringing and embraced it. And why not. In being receptive and giving his recognition to Hendrix, Miles was validating what he helped to create. And Hendrix valued Miles Davis' opinion abt his music as much as anyone's. That tells you a lot about how significant Miles Davis was as a figure in modern music.

Curator's Note: We end this week with one more clue for our investigation into the Case of Film Noir that will help us better understand the relationship between film noir and jazz-a topic first raised way back in our initial discussions of extra-cinematic determinants on the noir style. Today's Daily Dose film features a famous jazz score by Miles Davis. As David Butler states in his book Jazz Noir: "It was in Europe, and France in particular, that the first fully fledged jazz scores were utilized, as opposed to the jazz-inflected scores of Elmer Bernstein, Alex North, and David Raksin in Hollywood. The most significant of these scores is probably the music provided by Miles Davis for Louis Malle's claustrophobic thriller, Ascenseur pour l'echafaud [Elevator to the Gallows] (1957). Davis' score, improvised after he and the rest of his quintet (comprised of Barney Wilen, Rene Urteger, Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke) had watched scenes from the film, was a pure jazz score, significantly in the modern style of bop, when such an experiment had yet to be attempted by an American film. Although Davis' music was for a French film that was not strictly a film noir, in that it did not exist within the established American series of films, this score has often been cited as an example of the relationship between the idioms of jazz and film noir. One of the most significant pieces of evidence, therefore, for the extent of jazz's involvement with film noir is seriously flawed because it was not actually present at the scene of the crime" (page 12). While we have discussed jazz on the message boards, especially Hollywood's inclusion of jazz moments and/or jazz-inflected scores in film noir, it is a film like Elevator to the Gallows that might be our best clue as to why we equate jazz scores with the noir phenomenon. Though we should note in our case-files that one of the best examples of noir jazz might be in this French film from the late 1950s, made towards the end of the noir cycle. Yet, I can't imagine a better musical elegy to film noir than this splendid, haunting score by Miles Davis, recorded two years before his classic Kind of Blue album. [Curated by Richard L. Edwards]
