This record date was Cannonball's, PERIOD!!! The latter asked and invited Miles Dewey Davis III to share the front line with him. Julian Edwin Adderley was recording as a leader before John William Coltrane, Sr. When Cannonball arrived in New York City, in 1955, Yard was already gone for three months. Adderley was in great demand for recording dates, night club appearances, and so on. Most Xs and millennials weren't even born when this classic LP was released circa December 1958. They bought this album (mostly on CD) because of Miles, PERIOD!!! I was very fortunate to know Blue Note's photographer, the late great Frank Wolff. Cannonball picked his rhythm section for the March 9th, 1958 record date: the legendary pianist Hank Jones, the legendary bassist Sam Jones (no relation) and master percussionist Art Blakey. Jones would later become Cannonball's bassist for the next several years afterwards. 'Trane was certainly one of the greatest tenor saxophonists in the history of jazz. However, there wouldn't any tenor saxophonists, without the one who started it all, Coleman Randolph "Hawk" or "Bean" Hawkins, PERIOD!!! JULIAN EDWIN "Cannonball" ADDERLEY (September 15th, 1928 - August 8th, 1975), one of the greatest alto saxophonists in the history of modern jazz, continued to make other great albums after he left Miles. SOMETHING ELSE (Blue Note BLP 1595) was one of them. Oh, by the way! This arrangement of "Autumn Leaves" belongs to another master of the keyboard, Ahmad Jamal. Ciao!

Thanks, Bruce, this is about the best jazz recording of 'Autumn Leaves' PERIOD 😊by a distance. I have always pondered why much of the credit went to Miles Davis when the arrangements were Cannonball's

@@Axylrose2000 ...This Autumn Leaves arrangement belongs to Ahmad Jamal, not Cannonball Adderley. There are other great versions of Autumn Leaves recorded by Ahmad Jamal, Erroll Garner, George Shearing, Cal Tjader, just to name a few.

Superb. Adderly is a consumate musician and Miles is, well Miles. This is what improvisation is supposed to be like. Close your eyes and be transported.

Even when Cannon tries to play sad and mournful it's still comes out exuberant and affirmative. It's just his personality shining through.

Some people like oranges and some prefer grapefruits. I prefer Chet Baker's more traditional interpretation, but this is more melancholy and certainly very very good.

What a masterpiece, full of melancholy. As a French, i have to say that this song is originally a poem from Jacques Prévert called " les feuille morte" in Eng " the dead leaves" i wish everybody who love this song could know the original text of this beautiful poem who talk about a lost love and the nostalgic of this relationship, i don't know why they changed the lyrics for the English version ( the fallen leaves) the original version is much better, let me translate it for you guys, for all of us, who lost their lovers. Oh I would like you so much to remember The joyful days when we were friends. At that time, life was more beautiful And the sun burned more than it does today. Fallen leaves can be picked up by the shovelful. You see, I have not forgotten… Fallen leaves can be picked up by the shovelful, So can memories and regrets. And the north wind takes them Into the cold night of oblivion. You see, I have not forgotten The song you used to sing me. (chorus) This song is like us. You used to love me and I used to love you And we used to live together, You loving me, me loving you. But life separates lovers, Pretty slowly, noiselessly, And the sea erases on the sand The separated lovers’ footprints. for yayun

I like Miles with Cannonball. Mr. Adderley smooths out Miles temper some. The rhythm section(?) lays a steady movement you could walk on with just the right amount of swing. IMOI one of the best Autumn Leaves.
