In the midst of the huge dollar UHQR craziness, I rewatched this video and quenched my FOMO by purchasing the *mono* version. Upon receipt, It took my ears a few minutes to adjust to the differences as, like many of us, I have the stereo (digital, gasp!!) version indelibly engrained into my psyche. BUT, the mono sounds excellent and is less than $30! Love that it's speed corrected. Great punch and dynamics. Definitely a must buy for the KOB fans that want a solid copy but aren't going drop a Benjamin+ on any one album. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!!!

Thanks so much! I suppose I could have fleshed out the MoFi a bit more... to me it's a bit too flubby in the bass, they goosed it a bit much. The Classic is more neutral sounding and open so the Classic, for now, is the best... Although there is a certain sense of air around a mint original that none of the reissues quite reach, then again, the tapes where 63 years younger too!

hey Ray, thanks for tuning in... it's a little more difficult to track down the provenance of CD masters unless they are some fancy reissue. That said, if you can find the 50th anniversary CD of KOB, it uses the same 3/2 new stereo mix that Mark Wilder ran in 97, so that should be a good start for you and I doubt it's expensive. Danny, -- You emphasize several times that Kind of Blue is the best selling jazz album of all time. Well, it may be, but it depends on what source(s) you reference. I've read and heard just as often that Dave Brubeck's Time Out album is number 1 in sales. I'm not pulling for either one, but Time Out also had, if I'm not mistaken, a charting hit, with Take Five, which boosted album sales. Then again, KOB may have had more re-issues. --Anyway, both on Columbia, both released in '59. --Which one is really ahead at this point? I think it depends on who's doing the math.

Great stuff Danny. At first I thought Chad already send you an early copy. That would’ve been wild. I always thought the A side had the speed issue? Also it only concerns the stereo version, the mono runs at the correct speed. I didn’t know the tapes were gone.

@@SonicFlare that’s a shame. Not saying that I prefer monos in general, but as you said and it’s definitely true for early stereo releases, that the separation of both channels was pretty drastically. Something I've rarely heard discussed, but has anyone ever noticed the flaws in the KOB recording? Specifically the distortion (and of course the soundstaging, but I think we've grown to accept that issue for recordings in that era.) At this point I am used to most of the problems on the album to the point of overlooking them, and while it does not keep me from enjoying one the greatest albums ever, it does keep me from wanting to invest an an uber-expensive copy of the album.

Hey Danny ! Great video on such an instrumental recording from both a musical and audiophile stand point. I Agree with you , Classic Records is the best to date . Will be interesting to see if Chad tops it and even more interesting how much improvement will we get from the UHQR 45rpm when he releases that. Now regarding mono Vs stereo I think is an album by album decision. I read Joe Harley as Ron Ranbach from MMJ decided to use Mono Blue Train as they felt a train literally could go through the center of the soundstage on the stereo version. I got the MMJ SRX and Haven’t got a descent stereo version to see if I agree with him or not, maybe you have one and could comment on the accuracy of that statement. Keep them coming !

Great to see you launching your own channel!. I ordered my UHQR Kind of Blue a couple days after the announcement, so I guess I won't be getting the first batch, also, since I live in Chile, i had to figure out the best way to get, since the direct shipping from Acoustic Sounds is super expensive). Personally, I love mono, to me, when it comes to jazz, i almost always prefer mono up until 1960 at least (unless it's a Rudy Van Gelder album, or maybe a Columbia like Time Out), and if we're talking about soul, pop or rock, i extend that until 1970, especially when engineers did the hard panning thing and left nothing in the center, which is quite common on pop/rock records of the 60s. I own the mono Kind Of Blue RSD, so the UHQR will be my first stereo copy. Lookin' forward to it! Cheers from Chile

You took a deep dive right into the bottomless pit of audiophilia... haha... I get it. Here's the thing, it's very easy to get caught up with all that technical stuff. You mentioned VTA. Why stop at VTA? There's azimuth. Did I use an elliptical stylus? Was the cantilever boron or some other precious metal? How about the temperature of the coils, did I check those before playing? Was the record cleaned before? What was the humidity and air pressure like? Did I even use a cartridge that had coils, or did I use a light sensing photo diode powered cartridge, DS Audio? Which cables did I use? Etc. etc. etc. See how quickly this can escalate into the abyss? Setup your deck properly, or have someone who knows how to do it set it up for you... enjoy the music. Play a record. Life's too short. Re: mono, yes, I have a dedicated mono cartridge... I enjoy the toys that bring these records to life and give me an unforgettable experience... I am not in a laboratory environment, I am in my living room playing music... 😎 No doubt an episode in the making around this very topic.

@@SonicFlare That was my question when asking about "setup". If you used the mono cartridge that's definitely a plus. If all the "technical" stuff to make vinyl playback better is too much... don't do it, there's no Record Cops. Was just asking; you promoted it as a "shootout" so inquired about how level [pun intended] the 'playing field' was.

MOFI 45 is pretty good. Don’t expect too much from the UHQR will probably sound flat like the other UHQR from Acoustic. The 45 to come from Acoustic might be the one though
@SonicFlare3 жыл бұрын
to me the MoFi has too much bass, sounds too flubby.
@hemantishwaran57413 жыл бұрын
@@SonicFlare Agree there's a bit of bass bloom. But it's still solid and sounds great and more importantly available and relatively cheap. I just purchased one from Mofi a few weeks back. The UHQR is over rated and more hype from the vinyl community. You think they don't have a vested interest in selling 25,000 copies at 100 bucks a pop? Ah, that's 2.5 million dollars for a *re-release* of a widely available album...

One of the most comprehensive Miles Davis Kind of Blue review with so many releases and the comparison is much appreciated. After 10+ yrs of hiatus, I got back into vinyl due to the pandemic lock down. Vinyl gave me some inspiration and sanity while being locked up at home during COVID, and boy I am glad I got back into vinyl just in time for this UHQR release. Pre-order confirmed. Thanks for the great video.

Got my uhqr 33rpm Miles Davis Kind of Blue and it has three loud pops at the end of side one and quite a few ticks throughout. I was hoping for 100 plus dollars I would not have to clean the album. My initial impression is the mobile Fidelity 45 RPM version sounds better. I know this is a 33 RPM vs 45 RPM but it cost $100 and should be superb. The mobile fidelity has better Bass and both seem to be equal with mid-range and treble. Not extremely impressed with this uhqr vinyl . Maybe that will change after I clean it. Sitting here listening to the pilgrim walking into the forest that I probably bought from Bandcamp for around 20 or $25 and the vinyl is dead silent with superb analog recording. Very silent!

Do you think analogue productions are missing a trick not doing Uhqr in one step.
@SonicFlare3 жыл бұрын
In short, no. Not at all. One step is nothing new really, it’s a great new old marketing tool however. Is a one step superior to a regular record? All other things being equal, perhaps. One thing that I ask myself is just how many times they rerun the tape to cut the record … remember for them to do 20k one steps, they likely need to do 20-40 runs. So what’s that all mean Basil… well, depends. At any event, I don’t think that UHQR, based on the fact that Chad shows you the actually copy of the tape used, is losing out on one step… let’s see what the KOB will sound like!!! Exciting!!!

The 50th box, lol. Aside from doing AS favour to shift the remainder, hell no. For the book /poster/prints perhaps, a lovely set. but certainly not for the pressing which was extremely poor and exceptionally noisy. Not the cut,, the pressing. No “audiophile” nor serious MF would recommend it with credibility. That pressing was a disaster. also worth pointing out that not all classic records are as good as others. Especially the original 200g 33rpm non clarity was plagued with problems. If you get a good one it’s GREAT, but you may go thru three or four noisy pressings to find that. Of course the UHQR we hope and can trust to not have this problem. Wilder “discovered “ the speed issue (that musicians everywhere had known for decades) and it first was “corrected” in 94 on CD Also, it was only the stereo that had the speed issue, so there’s plenty of earlier versions, just not stereo. You really should have mentioned, even if you don’t have it, the current in print Sony legacy release which is far greater sound than the box for a fraction of the price. A much better option than the 50th box aside the goodies. Looking forward to more vids
@SonicFlare3 жыл бұрын
Book, poster and prints are all great!!! You don't know what you don't know until someone tells you otherwise... someone who doesn't have any of the superior pressings on hand or has heard them, would think the 50th anniversary sounds fantastic... perspective is the mother of all clarity 😎 Not surprised the Sony Legacy disc sounds great, now and then they do make good CDs!
@harbars13 жыл бұрын
@@SonicFlare well, if they got one of the thousands of noisy ones, they would know, because they’d hear it. Just like all the customers who complained about it back when it was released. At any rate it is a steal at $60 for the goodies and we’ll worth for them. Just be sure to budget another £20 for a decent record!

@@harbars1 you’d be surprised how many people - normal folks who just heard of vinyl - think that noisy vinyl is perfectly normal… perspective is the mother of all clarity.
@harbars13 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t be, and am not surprised at all mate. It’s often as obvious as the clouds in Edinburgh! it’s also fair to say that even the newest of newb doesn’t dig non fill, especially if they’ve heard the same tune elsewhere (shudder, streaming!) 🙂. Sometimes “perspective” isn’t ignorance! Especially when when talking about the intro of the first track of this album which they’ve already heard in dozens of films without knowing it. At the same time, you are of course right that for those who don’t know, or haven’t yet heard differently it will still sound great - because KoB is fucking great, even on a shitty AM car radio.
