Miles Davis plays his butt off in this video, and the band is slamming too. I guess the whole "jazz died in 1967" crowd don't get it - fine. Leave it to us to enjoy. Miles note choice and placement, his groove, his charisma - it's all there. Oh and John Scofield's guitar solo on the opening track is one of the greatest you'll ever hear. Plus Darryl Jones, Bob Berg...this band is packed with fantastic musicians all bringing it because they are in awe at being on stage with the one and only himself.

Agreed. I saw the next iteration of this band at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in 1986. Robben Ford was on that date, a great player whose subsequent transformation into a “blues guitarist” has always baffled me. Whatever, this group is just balls to the wall 80s fusion jazz, man. Such a great time to have been seeing lots of shows. Who’s the drummer on this date, do you know?
@david.jacoby3 жыл бұрын
In deference to Mr. Ford, I should say I haven’t really followed his career. I’m going to go see if I know what I’m talking about ;)

David, the drummer is Miles nephew Vince Wilburn.

Got to see him a bunch... such an absolute force to be reckoned with. My best memory of Bob was him showing up in a cab to 55 Christopher, hopping out with his case in his hand, and squeezing through the packed crowd to the stage (such as it was) and just absolutely DESTROYING. He was on stage when I saw Miles in ‘86 at SPAC as well. Man we were so lucky back in those days...

Darryl Jones has to be bored out of his mind playing with the Rolling Stones! I imagine the paychecks are pretty damn sweet, though.
@karloarsch15795 жыл бұрын
I saw Darryl last night with Mike Stern, Keith Carlock & Bob Malach and mike´s wife. They were brilliant and everyone could see how much Darryl enjoyed playing. I´m sure his paycheck was not more than a nice tip for that night (small club), so it is absolutely ok to play the bass for the Stones. Also why should the fans of the Stones not enjoy one of the best living bass players?

From my very own point of view, this is the best ever fusion gig available on KZbin! Jean-Pierre has never been so fantasticaly improvised, with Daryl and Sco kicking everybody' ass on this planet! Should have been there, at FJM 1985, instead of drinking atrocious cider in a park nearby... Berg, Sco, everybody, even Vince, are top notch here! And what about the Grand master...

Berg said: "Miles fired me for playing too much. I couldn't help it, it sounded so good." You can see Miles thinking that around 29:30 the band starts to gel... especially the percussion and digital synth... Miles is listening for directions... Berg just keeps playing over it ruining it. Berg just isn't listening. Miles just couldn't drop saxes, even though they weren't working, he was just too used to having them. Miles couldn't get his sound right for awhile when digital synths came in, because they didn't do improvising as well as analogue synths. You can hear around that section that they do percussion/rhythm though. Miles said the drums set the band off, and in my opinion his best music was when the band was the drum. Drum rhythms from Africa but tuning from Europe. That's what Jazz is, African rhythm, European harmony. Loved the Dewey... never be another like him. Love his middle stuff the most, really fierce driven, avant guard but swingin'.

Easily one of the better performances of Miles and his crew of Knights at the Round Table. I especially appreciate the Unabashed, Unapologetic, Vigorous, and Masculine sound this performance embodies. Miles is easily the Best Jazz Composer. Bob Berg has an Excellent Performance. John Scofield does his thing. Everyone did a Great Job! Guys just having a Great Time Rockin Out!
