To this day, whether i believe it or not in the moment, i try and recite "everyday above ground is a good day". Surely he didnt coin the phrase but this is its purest form in my head. Cheers to another 5 years.

"In a world where best friends come and go like tides, but cigarettes stay 20 in a pack, burn straight every time. So I can count on smoke, and I can count on wine. And I can't count on time, or all the times I have sinned." - This. This is so raw, yet so true.

I can't count on tomorrow, but why would I want to...today, today, only today you are the oldest you have ever been and the youngest you will ever be! Just incredible Miles.

He rests in the beat, he doesn't push too quickly, he goes at his own pace. I like that, there's no hint of a rush.
@karinateves20509 жыл бұрын
I love how once he begins his poem how he turns into a different persona and how his voice and his body language turns into this other being and its beautiful to see someone transform like that even for just a moment

Out of all the Strivers, I have to say Miles is definitely my favorite. He has this genuine emotion and rhythm that flows well with his work. The admiration I have for Miles Hodges talent can't really be expressed. I aspire to try and be as good as him and want to emulate my style after his. Keep on doing your thing, Mr. Hodges. You're changing the world.

He's saying he's hopeless. He has no happy ending. But also I think that he no longer craves that. He's content in his own destruction and he is living in the present for the feeling, because what else is he to do?
@yowzephyr9 жыл бұрын
He sounds like someone over 50. But of course he's actually very young. I guess he's been thru a helluva lot.
@band41329 жыл бұрын
I believe he's saying he can't find meaning in life when everything seems so meaningless. Everything changes and has an end, so what is there really to count on throughout? Nothing, and that's okay. You learn to accept it when you live life without a blueprint, without deciding how things ought to be

"There exists no map, you'll never know when you are winning" - Such smart words put together to create such emotion - loved it ! It's almost as though he becomes a different person in his spoken word; so glad he is able to share it with the world ! x

He is sharing the things that are consistent that we can see compared to the things we can't see or prepare for. The challenge to believe when everything says it is over and all hope is gone.

"And I hate to admit it, but I can't count on a goddamn thing. This is the trauma of being. Mama gon' die one day. My fathers' word will unfurl. My brothers' smile will curl. The mountains will crumble, will move. The sea will stumble, past the levies. Will leave your city in a permanent dusk, you can trust, that the wind will carry your girl to another man's bed. And that's okay. I'm learning how to surrender. And that's okay. I can't count on tomorrow, but why would I want to? 'Cause today, today. and only today, you are the oldest you have ever been, and the youngest you ever will be. Know that, this is one small man with one big heart. In this prison. Of seven billion. No happy ending... But God, does it feel good to be here."

Can you count on him to save your mother from falling dead one day? Can you count on him to stop the lips of your brothers lips drooping? I'm not trying to destroy your hope but this poem, it me hard, and I just felt like retaliating to your comment.
@itsdestaynee10 жыл бұрын
You can count on God to do whatever is in his will. My hope will never be destroyed because my hope is in the only true living God, who sits on the throne. Sits high and looks low. You should try Jesus. He will give you peace even if your mother does drop dead, even if your brother keeps drooling you can still have unspeakable joy.
