I realize this is a lot to say over an edit for a super hero film, but Into the Spiderverse has been one of the most important parts of 2019 for me. At the start of the year I lost my mother, and it took a huge toll on me. I wasn’t prepared for that. I don’t remember what I did for months afterwards because of all the grief I was unable to cope with. I went through day-to-day but I don’t have any lasting memories of that time and I was never watching shows or listening to music or even really interacting with anyone. And then I saw this film. And it made me feel things again when I saw Peter Parker die. Not his uncle, but Spider-Man. Because my mom was like a superhero to me, someone I looked up to and couldn’t fathom losing, likes Miles didn’t. I cried my eyes out, while watching the film and then watched it again and again and again. It became something to pick me back up when I was feeling particularly down. And my life didn’t magically come back together in a neat little bow like a film, but this movie really helped me try to pull myself back together and give me hope again. It still hurts a lot and even now while writing this I’m crying, but with the anniversary approaching this was a really nice reminder of how far I’ve come and how far I still have to go with healing. I just want to say thanks for making this edit and reminding me of just how powerful this film is to me.
