I take a leap into the utter perfection that is Into the Spider Verse in order to explore what it is that makes it's most perfect scene so god damn perfect.
So this was supposed to come out about five months ago, but I'm currently in the middle of the whole transition from high school to college, so I hope you'll cut me a break if the upload schedule is a little sparse for awhile. Not that it's ever been all that consistent to begin with, but I feel like I should at least update you guys on why this took so damn long.

I really love that they never demonize his uncle. yes, he’s a criminal, but he’s not a cartoonish villain. he loves others, lives somewhere, enjoys music, is a *person* . and more than that, is a person Miles loves back, even if it’s complicated. he doesn’t turn away from the good parts of his uncle, but takes them in as guidance, just as much as the good things about his dad. in a way, Miles’ success is the brothers reconciling through him

Fun fact. During the beginning of the movie, Miles was animated at a slower frame rate to give him a clumsy and hesitant over all look. As he refined the control over his power they animated him at a higher frame rate to make his movements smoother and more crisp. I love this movie!

I will always remember when I went to the cinema because I was bored and I bought a ticket to see this movie because it was the only room that had seats. I went without expectation, without seeing any trailer, without knowing the movie existed, and yet when Miles took the leap of faith, I remember getting goosebumps and starting to cry. That scene and that movie has been the greatest work of art that I have ever watched and it was all just by chance.

YES!!! 100% this!! I've been gradually getting less and less interested in the MCU movies because it feels like Marvel is going for profit first and true cinematic art second. Quantity over quality. It feels like there's always a new MCU movie coming out & it's always a box office breaker, whereas the Spider-Verse creators have been taking their time to perfect the movies and it shows. Don't get me wrong, I fully recognize that a _lot_ of time and effort and care go into both Spider-Verse AND MCU movies & I've got total respect for those folks. (That's a lot of really hard work!) The MCU movies are still pretty good & are definitely very high production, the Spider-Verse movies just feel different to me. Also, this isn't any hate to folks who love the MCU, the creators of the MCU, etc., these are just my own thoughts and experiences. (Edited for formatting)

Also, want to point out something I realized while watching this video essay is that Fisk is the perfect villain for Miles to face. He represents the societal norm of what it means to be successful: money, power, fame, his own building. However, while Fisk conformed, Miles rose above to conquer and form his own success with the final battle being Miles defiant defeat over "success" as concept of one meaning.

The camera angles and character positions in this animation speaks so much too. You see it in the beginning of the movie through the end. The camera flows, almost walking alongside Miles as he talks and waves to his peers. It swings, bounces, turning and connects his comfort zone. But when he’s in the academy, it is centered on him in the middle of attention. It’s stuck in a static position, staying the same and cold. Then there’s the beginning with his fathers. Position farther and looks smaller compared to his father, who’s upfront and at a angle with him. The lightening is dull inside, yet the light outside is warm, almost out of reach. It’s true, perspectives make a change.

He's influenced by those around him including his uncle. As the prowler, his uncle parkours across building walls with huge burst of movement. Miles matches this with his own webspinning and spidey movement as he takes his leap of faith. Compare it to Peter Parker, you see him confidently or non-chalantly crawling, walking vertically, or just web spinning across the city walls so there's a direct contrast to Miles making his own identity as Spiderman.

everything is great about this film, but my most favourite scene in it is the leap of faith. It includes Miles still being kind of afraid to do it, backing off a bit forward, and taking away some glass at the jump. Miles is faced off by his great fears, and the music with the silence before the jump makes you know that. It feels so powerful I can't even describe it.

The glass break is the defining moment of the movie for me. It's the part that sells the fact that this IS a leap of faith. If he'd just jumped it would be easy to say, sure they say it's a leap of faith but he's Spider-Man, he was never in danger... but that one tiny addition (alongside the earlier scene that set up that he needs to relax to unstick) really sells to me how terrified he is in that moment, but still commits.

I’m sitting here in absolute tears. I haven’t been able to lay a finger on why this movie means so much to me. Now it makes so much sense. to this day the leap of faith scene gets me teary eyed. There is so much catharsis in that scene. It's beautiful and heartbreaking, cool and impressive. And that moment caught in slow motion, where he is rising instead of falling is truly the pinnacle of it all bc that's what *faith* is. by far this has to be one of the best video essay I have come across on this app. after watching ‘across the spiderverse’ and then immediately being recommended to me, I’ve been in awe of just how genuine this entire franchise has been. Not only is what makes Miles’ story and what it reflects successful, it’s also love they put into this movie as a whole. As someone who is also afro-latino, I see myself a lot in him with the way he interacts with his parents and how they do with him. Seeing someone who honestly looks like I could be related to be the protagonist of one of the most beautiful and impactful cinematic movies makes me so happy. Miles' character arc even has a meta element with this movie. For a long time, Miles was just another Spider-Man. The black Spider-Man. The replacement Spider-Man. Anything you could get from him, you'd just get from Peter, as no one understood what made Miles stand out. Suddenly, thanks to this movie, Miles' popularity exploded. Everyone wanted more of him because he truly came into his own. He wasn't just another Peter Parker, he is Miles Morales. He's getting more presence in the comics, he's being talked about more, and got his own video game just recently. Both in the story and in a meta element, Miles finally became Spider-Man. *His* Spider-Man.

Such as making his family be like an average family in brooklyn, instead of his comic book counterpart where his father is a Shield agent. To me they also mocked, in a sense, the spiderman that the public is supposedly comparing miles to, which is peter parker. Its like they forgot that peter parker is far from perfect. A lot of people was saying, there is nothing that wouldnt make miles just the second spiderman. Like peter is everything that is the superhero. They literally made a perfect spiderman and killed him. Right in front of us and miles. The real, actual peterparker that we have, P b P, is shown and he is broken. Its actually sad to see him on screen and it shows that non of the spiderman was ever ready to take the role not even the original one and miles is the same. Thats what makes them admirable that what makes him THE spiderman.

Crazy to me that people miss this. It's such a huge part of that scene to me, I can't picture the scene being anywhere near as good without it. The whole set-up earlier in the movie, with first Gwen and the hair and then Peter B. and the ceiling in the lab, both of them explaining to him that he needs to relax, can't un-stick if he's nervous. And then it comes to his big leap of faith, and the way we can tell how nervous he is is that he can't un-stick. It's amazing visual story telling.

I feel like whiplash is, the end scene is very impactful showing that everything that his life has led up to, the thing is it can be taken in two ways. A very touching scene that shows that his dreams have been made after all of his hard work. Or Andrew's teacher way of abusive teaching finally produces results, Andrew going into the isolation of music, and his dad realizing he's now drowning in drums and isolating himself from anyone else just to work on drums even more, as this was proven after he broke up with his girlfriend.

Not only does Miles's "parkour" style of webslinging represent his influence from his uncle, it also references earlier in the movie when he says he prefers running over slinging. It's satisfying to watch him use webs to boost his running and jumping because it represents him combining the two aspects of himself, Miles and Spiderman, into one fluid and robust style of movement that perfectly encapsulates who he is.

Was going to say the same thing (glad I scrolled down!) - the line earlier that he runs better than he swings, but Peter insisting he swing, it mirrors all of the themes of self versus the expectations of others. In most movies it would be a throwaway joke like, "haha look he can't swing so he's just running instead", but here its a core part of the theme and it comes full circle to Miles creating his own unique way of navigating the city.

I don’t know if anybody noticed but Miles is literally just a middle schooler! A MIDDLE SCHOOLER! He saved the world as a middle schooler while when the others became spider people when they were in high school. That makes it more challenging for Miles bc he’s only like 12 or 13. At that age your discovering a lot of things abt growing up. He became Spider-Man in middle school which makes him less qualified than the others, making him learn and grow even more than them.

One of my favorite part is the actual setting change of the leap of faith. Miles starts out trying to jump off the same building peter had, but it just isn't right for him. It's only that when miles goes into the heart of the city that he's able to pull it off, and he does so at night. his leap is fundamentally different because he is fundamentally different.

He's been doing the job long enough to know what he's doing and make it look easy and people look up to and idolise him (which all goes towards putting more pressure on Miles). In reality, from the tiny glimpse we get of Peter, we know that even he can't live up to this ideal. He says he's tired, and it doesn't feel like he's talking about just this one fight - he's tired of having to be the perfect Peter Parker.

I remember when this came out and for a few years after I didn’t believe this could be one of the best Spider-Man movies probably just because it was animated. But this year I took a film class and started hearing some aspects of the film that made me question that thought. @@peterdante1946 I'm saying just on a technical level, the skill of the writing, the animation quality, the story itself, etc. This movie is significantly better than most of the movies you mentioned on all of these fronts. I think even as a non Spiderman fan, this movie is still one of the best animated films of all time. I love Spiderman, but I didn't have any real connection to any of the characters in this movie specifically, they had to earn that. I still ended up loving this movie above all the others. Spiderman was solidified as my favorite superhero, and this movie is actually a part of that. Now, you could make the argument that this movie doesn't work as well if you're not a fan of superhero movies, but I don't think you need to be a Spiderman fan to have it connect on the same level.
