I heard that the Black Bear Guai had learned a resurrection technique from Bodhisattva Guanyin and he used it to revive his old friend the Elder Jinchi. But the spell failed and created that Wight. Apparently ringing the three bells around the mountain brings back his soul so we can enter that realm of obsession.

@@matthematicalplays He also used it on the original Lingxuzi. The giant white wolf you fight in the first chapter is actually another wolf guai brought in to replace the first one and keep the wolves in line, and he took their actual leader's name. That wolf you saw hanged in the forest was the original Lingxuzi. The resurrection technique is not perfect and requires corpses of like individuals to resurrect someone. When he found out that he was resurrected by the sacrifice (supposedly willing) of many other wolf guai, he was overcome with guilt, left the Black Bear Guai, and hung himself.

@@Zevox87 I agree with you on that. It's fine to compare, but there's a line between how much comparing is reasonable vs excessive. At least in this video, from about 1:00:00 to 2:30:00 and maybe even more of the video later, his commentary has devolved into criticizing the game by comparing different aspects of Wukong to different games. i.e. No stealth like Sekiro, not action/combo game-y enough like DmC, crappier combat than FF16, same sidequest system/map design as Souls games, worse story than Lies of P, etc. The only thing I've heard him say he likes about the game is that it looks pretty.

And his criticisms seem entirely honest to me - hell, I share them, so I completely understand where he's coming from with them. Also, I'd be willing to bet a lot of that is driven by questions and comments from the chat. Because there is a weird subset of people who try to insist that this game isn't a soulslike, or is more like Devil May Cry, and I'd be unsurprised if he was getting comments from them.

Afaik, the yellow rat's boss design is INTENTIONAL by the team because, in JTTW, the rat was indeed untouchable without the wind tamer. Hence it's lore-accurate. Ironically, people who complained about this are also the ones who called this game "linear". They don't tend to explore or at least read up on the portraits and the lore.

Yea, that’s literally fax. There’s so much work that went into this game and stayed true to the lore for sure. It shows why it’s actually important to understand all the content to make the gameplay enjoyable and a true experience.

@@tiggermillions5521 it wouldn’t be such a problem if finding the secrets wouldn’t be so contriving. Most of the secrets, a guide is needed because everything looks the exact same and the constant invisible walls discourage people to even try finding secrets because there’s a high chance you made all the way to what seems a path, only for it to be a invisible wall. I mean, for instance to get the scales to remove the waterfall, you have to go into a secret area where the entrance is only available after you crack it open by either the Rat Boss slamming into it or you using either the Stone Guai or one of the specific transformations. And maybe there’s a hint in the countless of lore descriptions, but that’s still a bad secret since outside of that, there was never a hint given that this can happen. And the game‘s secret paths and stories are constantly like this and like Elden Ring, you can almost never accomplish any of these without a guide at hand and people don’t want to play like that.

Some people already complaining about linearity, and you believe a guide would be a positive addition to the game? To be honest. There is a reason why you can NG+, and NG+ has a symbolic meaning. It is tedious I agree, but again, the game wants you to be "the destined one", not a listening one. Just like some people can get to the "true ending" and set Wukong free, while some are constantly stuck in endless reincarnations or simply give up, and forever be controlled by the golden headband. These are choices to be made to reflect the core value of the game. It's a story to be experienced and a lesson to be learned.

@@tiggermillions5521 except "the destined one" is a bland mute protagonist who doesn’t even show any real emotions throughout the story, so saying "we have to think like him" is the equivalent of saying we have to think like a rock. And i am not saying a guide is needed in the game, i am saying people are looking up guides because figuring out the cryptic messages the few NPCs share with you is too time consuming to figure out, the exact same issue Elden Ring has. You people give way too much credit on something that the majority of players do not care about and definitely would disagree, including Max who isn’t a rookie to these types of games. And again, true exploration is not rewarding in the game when there are invisible walls everywhere and everything looks the same in generic jungle/ desert/ snowy mountain etc.

I love Max, been watching him for year but he's being way too critical of this game. Harping on issues he happily overlooks in other games like Rebirth. While also saying the combat is shallow without even learning the combat, hence the not knowing what crashing is even though he hovered over the crashing skill for minutes. Again, my favorite streamer by far but this playthrough has been frustrating.

Same here over 9000!! Been watching his playthrough for every game. Been patiently waiting and excited to watch his playthrough for Black Myth Wukong. You can see he's being insanely critical to this game compare to FF7 Rebirth, Elden Ring etc.... It's hard to watch him play this. Just not feeling it. You guys should checkout Afrosenju or TheRadBrad playthrough for this game. It's genuinely unbiase. Wish Max give this game a chance, experiment with mechanics and stop complaining about the little things the other games has for this one. I'm seeing it what you're seeing mate. I know others are too but some are ignoring it and defending it.

I can tell he is not really liking the game in this episode which is fine. Its's refreshing seeing a streamer not just gushing over the graphic or something. And I would agree the combat is a bit shallow at the start, the point is you mash light and find the timing to punish with a strong heavy. People who are passionate about the game came here, expecting the same kind of reaction are probably disappointed. It's always fun to watch someone enjoys the things you like. That's why we watch these streams.

This story takes place after the Journey to the west. WuKong mentions it in the intro scene. "My master, safe. The scriptures, sound." There are also several lines within the game that also let us know this game takes place after the story of "Journey to the West"

That's why in my old age I realized that the completely blind playthrough "so nothing is ruined" just leads to a worse, less fun gamplay experience than double-checking somewhere or with someone that I'm not missing something important or misunderstanding some useful mechanic. I still experience the entire game for myself and play it how I want to so nothing is lost. A streamer who doesnt tolerate tips or suggestions but also misses a lot of things, never entirely figures out how things work and complains about the difficulty or lack of context is having a worse experience than they could be having almost entirely by choice.

This game made me watch a summary on Wukong' myth Basically, Elder Jinchi is from Journey to the West. That guy burned down the temple just to get Xuanzhang's robe, which is called a Kasaya. Wukong protected the traveling group with a fireproof mantle

No disrespect Max, you’re very biased and I watch you all the time. You are very bad at this game, and do not get the mechanics. Fair assessment, you let the media bias get to you. I switch stances on the fly in Wukong. All 3 in one combo, take one focus point to switch mid-combo. But this game is action heavy and the game encourages NG+ for you to be strong, I’m seeing dude at level 280 on KZbin wrecking the game, I one shot every boss in the game and had to unuse some sparks to have fun.

That's fine. As with a ton of players that felt they weren't "as strong as Wukong". Critical in the beginning. Once you get into op ultimate monkey bonk mode, that's when the real fun starts. You let go of what technical issues you're experiencing (shitty shadows and sharpening for me. Used a mod to correct this) and the game really shines at that point. If you're on console, then I can only imagine it's DEFINITELY not as great.

I mean, i haven’t played FF16, but from the gameplay i‘ve seen, it features *a lot* to it’s combat and i can imagine if it’s half as good as FF15, then of course it’s better than Wukong. I mean, gameplay wise, you play Wukid from beginning to end exactly the same. Spam light attack until you filled enough focus to use a heavy attack for extra damage. That’s it from the first boss fight to the last. And before yiu start, sure, there are stances, but they all still do the same, which is use at the end after enough focus was built and every stance only has 1 combo. That gets repetitive *very* fast. And you can never add or change or adapt to that formula outside of „this skill tree makes it a bit stronger, or a bit faster, or needs less charge time“. And the spells and transformations are really fun and amazing to use, but again, that’s the magic part and it gets used up relatively quickly with rock solid being super disappointing as a parry system. So yeah, i am siding with Max on this one

Man, I can’t wait for the big expansion, it’s going to be legendary. Can’t believe how many people thought this game was fake. Phantom Blade Zero is next to wow us, that game looks insane. Stellar Blade is also my personal game of the year followed by Astro Bot and Black Myth Wukong.

ARPGs are not rooted in souls games. Max really needs to play PE1, Final Advenures(a Mana game) Castlevania or Star Ocean. Souls games are an update on Diablo, Elder Scrolls and other ARPG games. It feels like Fromsoft beat Squre-enix into making an ARPG. Even though Square-Enix started off the genre with Final Fantasy Adventures and Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Hearts is the first real ARPG.

Yea, Max this isn’t just another game or a beat em up souls like struggle game. It’s a true as can get story that rewards you for exploration, reading the journals to learn the lore, find hints, and tips to bosses/areas. It’s definitely a thinker. Hopefully you can adjust your play style and overthinking and just have fun exploring and understanding. It’s extremely rewarding and enjoyable. The dev team snapped with this one.

I don't know how true that is, given I've seen him play through plenty of From Soft/Soulslikes and read all the item descriptions etc. He did an entire lore run of BB, he regularly stops and reads all diaries etc when playing Resident Evil, I always see him reading item descrtiptions in basically all games he plays etc.

@@omegashinra7672 Well that’s true, he’s definitely a diehard Bloodborne fanboy, but I suspect he spent thousands of hours playing Bloodborne off-stream to become a legend at understanding the lore. 😂 I certainly did the same, it’s my favorite game of all time. I hardly ever felt compelled to play anything else after that, and even after I told myself I was done, I just kept going back to it for years until Sekiro finally came out and gave me a reason to take a break. Thing is, I’ve still played Bloodborne every year since then. I fear for my life if a 60fps remaster truly is happening, and there is a rumor that FromSoftware is making another thing for Sony. 😭 I would lose my mind.

But If he’s just enjoying it or playing it to try it out and have fun he will miss a lot of things or not take the game seriously, and that ok but it can get frustrating some times since after he’s done with the game he’s basically almost never going to change his opinion of it even if he’s missed a lot of what the game has to offer.

without spoiling anything, Chapter 6 is a bit meh. i think they are the best in their linear design and suddenly chapter 6 is feeling a bit empty open world with almost no enemy (except for the mini bosses) which is a shame. i think theres also a couple of recycled boss as well in chapter 6 which is the ONLY chapter that has exact copy paste boss. Previous chapters have some re-skin but most of the re-skin still have 1 or 2 different gimmicks like the frog or the carts.

The game starts to fall off at Chapter 5. It has Chapter 1 style of level design, and it has a number of re-used assets. The "revenants" are just Chapter 3 ice zombos, the "lava" enemies are just the rocks from Chapter 2, the red demon thing is the Monkey from Chapter 3, the "fire" bat is just the bat from Chapter 2. The bull governor is likely just a reskin of the Bullguard in Chapter 1. Even with all that, I still prefer Chapter 5 over Chapter 6.

2 hours in where Max says he rates the game an 8.5, and MC gave it an 8, which is where I was feeling about it at the same point in the game as Max. But I'm in the snow now and immediately bumped it up to 8.5 when something happened that I won't spoil. But I suspect the game could get itself at least to a 9 by the end of my play through. But the obvious reason it wasn't scoring higher is the basic combat could have used more variety. Combat over all is pretty good, but lacking variety in basic attacks is no bueno...

coming from yesterdays stream, I'm so surprised by how much max seems to hate pillar stance when it has consistently been one of the most OP and abuseable things in the game for me. It dodges tons of attacks and seems to stun the enemy out of big attacks and phase changes quite a bit. Max's experience with this game has been pretty different to mine concerning some of his complaints like the stamina thing. I beat the whole game without any extra stamina or HP upgrades other than the ones you just randomly pick up out of the chests and I barely noticed it but to each their own, I think the combat has its fair share of issues regardless. I hope he enjoyed parts of this game because it is truly a fun game with many interesting lore bits, characters and secrets to think about and explore but it seems like he wasn't focusing on those aspects as much which I found unfortunate as that was the real highlight of the game for me. My major gripe with the game is it just felt like it wanted to be dark souls too much at times but it still manages to execute to a decent degree. Also this game probably could have had an optional map to use as well and it wouldnt have hurt anyone's experience, at least then people could have a little in game hand holding if they so choose and people like max can enjoy the game a bit more cause maybe less people will try to backseat but thats probably giving the average chatter to much credit

I love Max but watching him play games tends to annoy me because he doesn't explore his surroundings or pay attention to items he gets or reads stuff. The drunken pig questline had me yelling at the screen because he just runs straight through the temple like three times instead of looking around. He goes the opposite way of shrines and runs past NPCs. He also never checks his curios that he gets and it took him awhile to even activate his second relic. This should be gaming 101. I was really excited to watch him play this but I've been disappointed.

When you fought the first boss in Chapter 6, you mentioned that you didn't know how to know if you missed the side quests and bosses. actually，if you open the menu to find the “Journal”，check inside you will find the Protraits, you can see how many types of Lesser Yaoguai, Yaoguai chief & Yaoguai king you can fight up to the latest chapter you have reached in.Those with ？？？？marks are those you are missing. As for “Characters”, most of them are important side quest characters in each chapter, not necessarily bosses. The pictures in Journal are designed very similar to the old picture books we Chinese loved to read in our childhood so we couldn't help but to click in ，end up with finding ourself Immersed in it，If one is missing, we will definitely dig it out, that's just how the game is designed.

All the people complaining about max’s criticisms are: 1. Ignoring the fact that every time chat asks him if he’s liking it he says yes he is. 2. Max was not the one to say that wukong is similar to dmc nor that it should be, game reviewers literally told people the game is closer to Dmc so Max went in expecting that when that isn’t at all what wukong is. 3. His criticisms seem valid, he wishes the combat was more open (no animation cancels, no juggles, massive consumption of stamina on certain moves that feel like they shouldn’t take that much stamina if this is a game focussed on character action. I’ve played plenty of character action games and when I watch people try and tell me that wukong is one it’s laughable. Why can’t people just accept that it’s an action rpg with light souls influences, just cause it ain’t dmc don’t mean it’s bad.

It is short, not even a fraction of what Ninja Gaiden was, but its fun. BTW, Cartoon Network got closed and Adult Swim games are about to be delisted from steam, so you better hurry if you want it. Also, yea. Ninja Gaiden mechanics have a lot in common to DMC, but Ninja Gaiden was pretty famous cause it was one of the hardest games of its era. You pretty much get humiliated in the tutorial xD

Nioh is a mix of Soulslike and Diablo. It can be challenging starting out unless you got the gear and build. Alot due to stamina issues. But the build variety is second to none and you can really craft a playstyle that fits your style. Once stuff falls into place it feels great. The combat is better than Nioh 1 in every way but Max was just not able to get to the "feel good" state of the game. A game shouldn't need that but I am ok with it. I am an ARPG fan so I am used to slow build.

Man, I have so many hours in Stranger of Paradise! The game is very underrated. I appreciate it's story more after seeing a retrospective video of FF1. I love that you have so many possible builds you can make with the job system. My 1st playthrough I went with a crit build with 400% Tyrant, Ninja, and Black Mage. Now that I'm in the hardest difficulty NG+ I'm using Berserker, Dark Knight, and Paladin. I've learned how useful the NPC teammates actually are and how important their gear actually is. Every DLC has added so much great content to the game. I wish they would make a sequel.

If you havent been following his playthrough on twitch, just know that his opinion of the game doesnt seem to get much better. Also, his disinterest (or lack of knowledge) on wukong's lore doesnt help too. I am enjoying watching him play though despite all this, and am looking forward to hearing his thoughts on it after beating it. Hopefully, he goes for the true ending as well. He is currently at the beginning of chapter 6, and will be starting off there the next time he plays.

if you think this game is GOTY material, your standards need to be raised. it's like we've gone back in time to where any game with high graphical markers is lauded as landmark. sure, max is playing the game poorly, but he's not wrong with his critiques. i'm more baffled by the sheer amount of unbridled praise this game is getting from your average player - it's very obviously the most 8 out of 10 game i can imagine. it's a fun time, but there are quite a few issues with both polish and basic gameplay that should really make any typical gamer wonder why this game took as long as it did to come out with as many areas where the game is simply passable.

The only person I watch gameplays from is a guy called Elajjaz. He speedruns Elden ring sometimes but he also play games just like me by exploring every nook and cranny. I’m pretty sure he plays like a lot of us but he’s a professional gamer . Love Max though been watching him since 2019 but adventure games is not bro forte tbh😏
