U.S. high school indoor national record holder Quincy Wilson lowered his outdoor personal best to 45.17 in a big win at the 2024 PUMA East Coast International Showcase. The PR comes just a week after the Bullis School (MD) sophomore logged two 44-second 4x400m anchor splits at the Penn Relays.

To do this with that form is insane. I’m not even sure if he should fix it though. That second place finisher is a monster as well.

Very good observation and very good coaching thought In HS back in the 1970’s there was an athlete ( name forgotten now , but it will come to me ) who ran +/- 1.50 HS 880’s . Very unusual form . He ended up going to Rutgers where the coach changed the form to picture perfect and times went backwards to 1.51/1.52 . Coach couldn’t figure it out . Then he said , let’s go back to your original form . After a bit of time the athlete was under 1.50 ( maybe 1.47 ish ) consistently . It’s an interesting conundrum . Form over result . I have seen the same in many sports

form is dependent on the biomechanics of the individual. there's no point chasing an 'ideal' form if it works against you. its more about wasted energy and symmetry of motion, and QW has no issues with either of those things. Nor did Michael Johnson.

That’s Jayden Horton Mims from Philly. He’s still a junior and has an amazing finish. Won Nike Indoor Nationals with an almost evenly-split 46.85. Fresh off a 45.13 anchor at Penn Relays and a couple raw 45’s as well. Jayden will be a name to watch for the foreseeable future.

Burnout depends upon many factors - coaching , injuries , mental pressure . Many good athletes can “ get there “ early . How long they can stay “there “ and how much better they can get is up to the individual athlete. He is very nice to watch !

Thanks for the attention to Quincy. He is a gift and a very nice kid to boot. He has great coaching and what a team environment. I hope he can get that at his next level. So regarding the analysis, if you don't mind, a few talking points to consider. Slow down the video with simple app like hudle and you will see he is not actually heel striking in a sense that has him running with gas and brakes on at same time. He lands with heel and mid foot coming in contact simultaneously during initial contact during slow motion and when fully loaded he is where he should be. But you are correct to say that because he can get a simple correction that would stop that heel contact which may create some resistance to forward motion. Look at the way he is Dori-flexing his foot during swing. He should keep that relaxed and neutral so when the foot strikes the heel isn't even there if that makes sense. Regarding his heel kick, this is just because he has a massive stride length and hip angle. This is amazing that he can maintain that at around 220 strides per min turnover. Wow! also remember when that leg comes back he gets an auto free energy return forward from hip flexor and that auto flexes his trail knee and causes the the heel kick. He doesn't do that consciously and it is not coached. It's free energy from the stride. Same happens when you drive the arms back. There is free stored energy from the elastic end point that assists in driving forward. The head tilt is tricky and on the surface neutral is technically best however there are other consideration that involve very personal anatomy. I don't know why he does that but I first consider the neurology. When he flexes his head forward he also is lengthening his posterior chain neurology. It is all connected. So let's say we fix his doors flexion in his foot. This will give us a little slack, maybe enough to bring his head forward without changing length of total neuro system. But his stride length must also be considered and we don't want to restrict that either. His flexed hip is also lengthening that chain as well. This is hypothetical of course as I have no idea if he has any restrictions there. If I was his athletic training at his school I would consider doing neuro-glides and make ankle/head adjustments with his coach. Then again I may just leave him alone because there is nothing broke on this kid and he seems to be consistently healthy. haha Keep the videos coming and appreciate much.

i think you might be onto something..his times arent going anywhere at the moment. 45.76 10 march indoors should translate to a big sub 45 outdoors. he also ran a leg in the 4x400 on march 10th, then he ran 45.19 outdoors 29th march, a 44.4 and 44.7 relays splits over 2 days 29th and 30th march, and now this at 45.17. and he also ran a 46.69 opener on march 9..that's 7 400m races in just over 2 months. and he's ran 11 times since mid january in fact..300s, 500s, 600s, 200s as well. maybe this time had alot to do with the conditions..rain and 50F is very cold..
