Dante Basco, who played the iconic Rufio in Hook as well as the voice of Jake Long the American Dragon, and a Fire Nation prince who hunted for the Avatar so he could return home but end up joining the Avatar to defeat his father and sister and became Fire Lord in one of the best arcs of a series...is now in a Mikey Bustos parody music video. What a timeline we're living in. Seriously, TWO Filipino legends in one is overwhelming! But glad he took up the offer to join in! When I lived in Jersey City, there's a place in Journal Square called the Philippine Bread House. My best friend there was Filipino (from the Bacolod region), and for Christmas one time in middle school, he gave LOTS of breads and cakes from there. I was extremely thankful of him and his mom for surprising me with all of that but overwhelmed because I was wondering how I was gonna carry it back home on a minibus. That's when I learned about Filipino hospitality. Y'all go above and beyond to make other people's days!

Ensaymada (or ensaïmada by its Spanish name) is originally from Mallorca, a part of Spain's Balearic Islands! It's called ensaimada because the original Mallorca version is made with a kind of reduced pork lard called saïm. Saïm is a Catalan word (as those who live on the Balearic Islands are Catalans) that is derived from the Arabic word shahim (شحيم). When it comes to pilipit, there are TWO versions! The famous, more common kind originates from Quezon. However, there's a another variety that's made with a combination of white glutinous rice and purple rice. This one is from the Maguindanao area of what is now Bangsamoro and because of combination with the purple rice, the donuts have a LAVENDER color!
@exploreconmigo9090

I enjoyed reading the history of the word. Here in Vancouver I tried ensaymada for the firs, it's a delicious type of bread. Thanks for sharing!
@ocasanas
@ocasanas Жыл бұрын
Thank you SO MUCH for explaining this. I am Catalan, and I love ensaïmades. Once I made them but it was hard work because it takes three days to prepare the dough to be raised and kneed (three times, once per day). I miss so much the real ensaïmades and when I know anyone coming from Barcelona I tell them to buy a huge one (12-inch pizza size style) at the airport so that I can enjoy them. The Filipina ensaymada, for me, it's obviously not the same. I'm thinking (just on the thinking stage at the moment) of attempting the original ones again. I love them with angel hair (boiled and sugared spaghetti squash). Now I know why of the origin of "saïm" and "shahim". Greetings from Mindanao.

It makes me so happy every time I watch this. Love from an Indigenous Canadian. Now I want to try all the breads hahaha. We mostly just have bannock and fried bannock...maybe sometime with raisins so this just amazes me how many kinds of breads there are. Now I am recognizing them here in Canada. Thank you for teaching me in a super fun way and for spreading the happiness.

Our Cuban bread is a staple of Cuban-American cuisine. It's similar to French bread, but unlike French bread, it contains lard! Cuban bread is also nutty and sweet! Can't make an authentic Cuban sandwich without Cuban bread! And fun fact, stale Cuban bread has been used as a WEAPON! There's a micronation called the Conch Republic that "broke away" because they didn't like that the US Border Patrol treated the Florida Keys like a foreign country by putting a roadblock when the Overseas Highway meets the Florida Peninsula. When the US Army did a training exercise in 1995 at the Keys to simulate invading another nation, and they once again viewed that as the US viewing the Keys as another nation...so the islanders threw stale Cuban bread at the Coast Guard.

I love learning a little bit about the Philippines through these videos. Since my grandma moved with my Grandpa (from Indiana) to the States after WWII to the Midwest...she essentially acclimated to US Midwestern life (except the family get togethers. So much pancit! So much seafood! I don't eat any of it anymore, but gah, I remember Uncle Frank coming from Washington and bringing in the fresh fish from his boat. He was the coolest XD Been working on replacements. High five to Cooking with Carmina for her recipes). My dad didn't know anything about his heritage. Like, legit. Nothing. He occasionally made fried rice, but it was totally white people fried rice XD XD XD So it's nice to have something educational to help connect even in the smallest of ways (dudes, I don't look Filipino, I just like to celebrate all aspects of my heritage). I have some ideas on how to replace the eggs and butter in some of these >:D I love trying Filipino recipes and switching it up. Thank you for these fun and educational parodies. Sometime before I die, I'd like to see Manilla, and travel around all the islands.

If you’re anywhere in Lipa, try the bonete being sold at Raiy Lynn’s (sp?) which is just between an Andok’s and 7-11 at the right side of the road if you’re coming from Air Base and just before you make a right to Cuenca. It’s like Pringles, once you eat one, you can’t stop! Best eaten hot and with hot cocoa or coffee. Anyway, love this Mikey.
